What To Look for in a Home Air Conditioning System

By George Blade

A home air conditioning unit is a great thing to have in your home. But choosing the right type of air conditioner is essential as some models are not suitable for every climate and home.

A multipurpose home air conditioning system can be one of the best things you could buy. Having a home air conditioning unit that has a dehumidifier feature will help to keep rooms cool and comfortable rather than a unit that will only circulate the same old air. You might want to consider an air conditioning unit that produces cold air in the summertime and heat in the wintertime. This type of multiple use air conditioner is perfect if you live somewhere with mild winters where you don't need central heating.

Those who have allergies will benefit from an air conditioning system that includes an air purifier. It's particularly useful in the seasons when pollen is abundant. An air purifier protects you from the effects of recycled stale air being distributed throughout the area.

The installation requirements of an air conditioning unit might well be more important to you than sophisticated features. An easy installation air conditioning unit is often favored since they're more discreet and you don't have to worry about putting in an assortment of components.

The air conditioners that have an external component are more challenging to install for those people living on small properties. While units without external components may be more expensive they tend to be easier to install and may not need rewiring for installation. This way you can keep down the cost of installation as there is no need to call in a specialist for installation. Make sure you know the installation costs before you decide on a particular air conditioning unit.

A portable air conditioner is the simplest type of product to use at home. This type of product doesn't require installation and can easily be transported from room to room. Your room likely won't be quite as cool as with a permanently installed system, but it's a cheap and easy way to cool off without a lot of trouble. - 16477

Appealing Bathroom Plumbing Projects

By Santi Binbero

DIY is more popular than it has ever been, many people will try doing a spot of DIY around the house if they feel in the right mood. Some people are scared by the thought of DIY, in fact some people will find themselves reaching for the phone book when they hear a DIY project.

Although it's not a good idea to attempt plumbing projects by yourself it is often possible to do many simpler products.

It is true that DIY plumbing can save you a fortune, however if you try to fix something that is very difficult then you could end up paying a lot more money when you have to fix whatever it is you tried to resolve. In order to save money and get the best results from DIY plumbing you need to be honest with yourself and not try to do anything that is out of your capability. This is more complicated than say adding solid panel shutters to your windows.

Admit when You Need Help!

Before you embark on any plumbing project by yourself you should try to learn as much as you can. There are plenty of places to ask for advice, friends and family or even at your local DIY store. Ask yourself whether you think you're capable of doing this project.

If it's something as simple as the cistern lever in your toilet which needs to be replaced then it might be easier for you to replace the whole push button system rather than fiddling about with the single part. You should never think that a job is easy, you must learn exactly what you need to do.

It might be a good idea to buy a DIY book which has some information about basic bathroom plumbing projects. These books should be able to help you avoid some of the common problems which affect people attempting DIY. You should try to find a book which is easy to understand so that you don't need anyone to help you understand it!

Two Hands or Four?

Many people think that projects are simple, they have a habit of underestimating the jobs. You might need an extra pair of hands to help you hold something or do something while you are doing another task.

You should carefully consider the job from every angle before you start work. You can get lots of advice from someone else, especially if they are helping you out. If something goes wrong then you can ask for help from your friend.

It is possible to do certain plumbing projects in your bathroom by yourself, however it's not possible to do everything. It is important that you know a good plumber in case you do make a mess! - 16477

Peace Lily A Low Light House Plant

By Thomas Fryd

Unless you have a great number of windows, many areas of your home are probably considered low light areas. Generally this is defined as being eight feet or more away from a large window, with no direct light. Many areas of the typical home do not reeive enough natural light. However, you can still grow beautiful houseplants in these areas! There are many plants which will acclimate to low light conditions. They do not require high levels of care, although you should spray them with water occasionally to wash accumulated dust off their leaves. Here are some of the best low-light plants for your home:

Cast Iron Plant, or Aspidistra elatior, is a foliage plant with long, dark green glossy leaves. It has a reputation for growing under even the worst light conditions, and is not particular about temperature or water conditions, either. Watch for mealybugs, mites, and scales, which are known for attacking this plant. You should divide and repot this plant in the spring, when its roots have outgrown the pot.

Zebra Haworthia, another choice for low-light planting, is a succulent plant with white spotted leaves. These thick leaves form rosettes and tube-like flowers that hang on long stalks. It is a small plant, making it an ideal choice for container gardens or small spaces. It should be watered thoroughly, and night temperatures should be around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It should be repotted when it has outgrown the existing pot, in a well-drained porous soil mixture.

Chinese evergreen is another good low-light houseplant. They can even be grown in water, with no soil. There are many varieties with interesting color patterns, which can add variety to your plant selection. The temperature should not fall below 60 Fahrenheit at night. When the plant becomes root-bound, you should repot it.

Snake plant, or Sansevieria trifasciata, is an African plant with thick leaves banded with yellow or dark green. Older plants sometimes grow spikes of yellow or white flowers in greater light conditions. The soil should be sandy with some peat moss, and the plant should be fertilized every 3 to 4 months. You should water this plant thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch.

Split leaf Philodendron is a climbing plant with large leathery leaves. It requires support, such as a pole or lattice, but can easily be cut back to keep it within the space you have. Soil should be kept damp, and this plant prefers humid conditions and temperatures above 60 degrees.

Peace Lily is a plant which comes in many varieties available at garden centers or nurseries. The size of this plant varies greatly, meaning there is likely one to fit your needs. In higher light conditions, it will produce long-lasting, creamy white flowers. Soil should be slightly moist at all times, and temperatures should not drop below 55 or 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pothos, or Devil's Ivy, is a popular hanging foliage plants, and it can also be trained to grow upright on poles. You should keep the temperature warm, and the soil slightly moist at all times.

English Ivy comes in many varieties and grows well in low light conditions. Varieties come with different leaf shapes, colors, and sizes. Ivy can tolerate temperatures as low as 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Screw Pine, or Pandanus veitchii, is a shrub with white-striped, swordlike leaves. This plant prefers humidity, as well as temperatures above 60 degrees. You should allow soil to dry out between waterings, and repot only when rootbound. The plant propagates through suckers that grow out from the base of the plant.

Grape Ivy usually comes in hanging basket or table plant forms. This vine has small, glossy green pointed leaflets and tendrils. Guides on care of Grape Ivy say that this peace lily cultivar enjoys high humidity, and new growth is usually covered with a strange white felt-like substance, which will disappear as the new growth reaches maturity. - 16477

Building a Pond in Your Yard

By Kent Higgins

Ponds can be a unique feature of any garden. A backyard pond will become a focal point of your yard. Especially if you have fish in your pond, kids will love it.

However, many people assume that building a pond in their backyard will be difficult. In fact, it doesn't have to be. A pond does not have to be large or complicated. You can create a simple water feature to add interest in your garden. The sound of moving water is very beautiful and soothing. You don't need to overcomplicate your pond by adding a lot of features. When designing your pond, there are only two features you need to have: a place from which the water will fall, and a pool for it to fall into.

The water falling into the reservoir will provide the calming sound of running water, and your pond will be a beautiful addition to your garden. The reservoir should not be deeper than 2 feet. Many local regulations consider a reservoir deeper than 2 feet a swimming pool, which will have different and more complicated regulations.

For the sides of the reservoir, you can use a rigid fiberglass shell, or a flexible rubber pond liner. To add additional interest, you can also purchase fish or aquatic plants. These can also help balance the ecosystem of the pond, although it will take a little time to develop.

For the bottom of the pond, use landscaping gravel. Microorganisms will grow in the spaces between the gravel, which will help the ecosystem of your pond develop. These microorganisms release carbon dioxide, which is used by your aquatic plants. Your plants, in turn, release oxygen to be used by the fish. Aquatic plants will also help maintain the continuity between your pond and the rest of your garden.

Once you have installed the pond, make sure that it is supplied with a constant flow of water. Especially if you are planning to keep fish in your pond, make sure there is enough water for them. To determine how much water you'll need to fill the pond, first calculate the area of the pond in square feet. Then, multiply by the depth, to get the volume in cubic feet. Now multiply this number by 7.5, and you'll have the number of gallons required to fill your pond completely. Keep in mind that it will evaporate over time, so keep your eye on the water levels in your pond.

Besides these simple steps, there are many ways to design a pond. You can have water falling from a stepped cascade into the reservoir. You can use an electrical pump to bring the water above the cascade, where gravity will bring it down to the reservoir. If you wish to have a simpler pond, you can buy a readymade kit of small bubblers. This and landscape plants to surround the plant, will be enough to add visual interest to your pond. - 16477

More Technology for Solar Power

By Ross Wilskon

People across the globe are looking for alternative ways to expensive and damaging electricity. Whether it is because of the high prices or the threat of global warming, there has become a big push for solar power technology. Technology is advancing at a rapid pace, making solar power more popular and more user friendly than ever. If you have never considered going solar before, here are some things that you should know about solar power technology, and where it is headed in the future.

Brief History of Solar Power Technology: Solar power has not always been agreeable to all people. It is true that early attempts at solar power energy were less than successful. If you have ever seen an older home equipped with solar power panels, and you will undoubtedly remember the large awkward looking solar power panels placed all over the roof of the house. Sometimes the solar power worked quite well, and other times it did not.

This was a shaky start for solar power technology, and it left many homeowners wanting to help the environment in some way, but not wanting to consider this alternative at all. Luckily, technology has advanced rapidly over the last few years, shedding new light on solar power technology for homeowners and business owners all over the world.

Solar Power Technology Today: Technology has certainly advanced and solar power is now getting a second look. For many people, what seemed like a waste of time or a fad in the past is actually becoming a way of life for many. It is quite easy to equip your home with solar power technology if you know how it works. There are many professional companies that can help you understand how you can use solar power to your advantage.

In addition, when solar power panels or solar lights are installed properly, you can collect enough energy to keep you going for days even in the most severe weather. It is these types of advances in solar power technology that is giving the many homeowners hope that there is something that they can do to reduce their electricity costs, while helping the environment at the same time.

Technology keeps getting better every day. It is a good idea to keep an eye out for solar power technology. Undoubtedly, this will become a more prevalent way of powering homes and business in the very near future. - 16477

Does Spider Plants Easy To Care For?

By Keith Markensen

One popular choice for houseplants is the Spider Plant, whose scientific name is Chlorophytum Comosum. This is because they are very easy to care for, and are also quite attractive. While it is possible to over or under water them, as with any plant, they are very tolerant of varying conditions. They are very hardy, and can survive for many years in your home.

Spider Plants' leaves are long and narrow, and come in several variations, from dark green with yellow stripes to speckles and other types. They grow quickly and have many leaves, making them visually interesting plants to add to your home.

Unlike many other plants, they still grow well when root bound, meaning that you will need to repot them less frequently. As long as you keep the soil relatively moist, your Spider Plant should grow well. You can even go several days without watering them at all, as they are very tolerant of a range of environments.

However, there is one ailment to watch out for with Spider Plants. If the tips of the leaves become brown or spotted, you should change the type of water you give them. The chlorine and fluorine sometimes found in city water can damage the plant, so if the leaves are turning brown, switch to rainwater or purified water.

Not only can they tolerate varying amounts of water, but they are also tolerant of varying amounts of light. Although they do best in indirect sun, they can also withstand very bright sunlight for hours. They do particularly well in areas that stay around 65 degrees, but can go down to 55 degrees at night, because they are naturally used to a nighttime drop in temperature.

Spider Plants also tolerate a range of soil types, and are not demanding when it comes to fertilizer. While you should not overdo it or neglect them, applying fertilizer once in the Spring and once in the Summer is fine.

During the summer months, they grow beautiful, small, star-shaped flowers. These white flowers grow on a stalk that will grow to be three feet long. While they have this stalk, be sure to stake it if it is bending or learning excessively.

Spider Plants are particularly well suited for hanging baskets, especially as older plants which have produced many leaves. However, they grow quickly and can outgrow such pots, so you may have to divide the plant and repot it every couple of years. In a basket, they can grow to be several feet wide, and two feet tall even before the flower stalk grows.

Spider Plants, in addition to centerpiece dracaena plants, can be an easy way to add interest to your interior environment. Just like the Lucky Bamboo, they are very tolerant of a range of conditions, and are very beautiful plants. They can be found in any nursery, and are a perfect choice for the beginning gardener. - 16477

Power Log Splitter - An Investment In Time

By Nash Wendin

Everyone who has a fireplace or a wood stove has heard the age-old saying, "Firewood warms you twice; once when you cut it and once when you burn it." This was true for decades, as men and women used sledgehammers, mallets and wedges when splitting firewood. But in the last few years hydraulic, gasoline and electric log splitters have replaced much of the manual labor. The result: people spend more time relaxing by the fire than before.

What is important when shopping for a quality log splitter? The first question to ask would be: Will this be used for personal firewood only or will it be used to split wood that will be sold to others? If the wood is going to be used in a home stove or fireplace, then smaller equipment is sufficient (beginning in the 2 to 5 ton range). But for commercial log splitting, it will be necessary to purchase equipment that exerts up to 20 tons of pressure. Purchasing a splitter that is much too small is an invitation to trouble, as the engine will overheat or be damaged because it is overtaxed.

Some individuals have found that the quality log splitter is excellent for uses beyond the simple task of providing wood for the stove or fireplace. Some have incorporated their splitter into a furniture-making process, creating excellent chairs, tables and other items from rough wood that is initially split with the hydraulic or electric splitter. Commercial-grade splitters are used by forest-product suppliers to create rough-cut planking, prepare large trees for transport to the mill and so on. In every case, the modern log splitter has become an important tool for both private and commercial use. All of this translates into time saved and money saved.

Log splitters of sufficient strength and quality to last for years may cost hundreds of dollars. While it is possible to purchase an electric splitter for personal use, the larger hydraulic splitter can generally be more powerful and are good for commercial and heavy-duty use. These high-end items may cost thousands, rather than hundreds, of dollars.

If the log splitter is to be used only for home firewood, when the stove or fireplace is more a luxury item than a necessity, the smaller splitter should be sufficient. If the splitter will be used in a firewood business, even on a part time scale, it may be wise to figure out how much wood can be split per hour or per day, to get some idea about cost. Hydraulic log splitters can also be a tool for creating log furniture. In this case, it is also very important to get a splitter that is powerful enough and durable enough. It would be wise to take a bit of extra time to learn more about splitters, their capabilities and their costs, before choosing one that is too small.

With any power equipment, there is the issue of safety. While many new models of log splitter are self-lubricating and require very little maintenance, the more the individual learns about the equipment the safer it will be when in use. Tip: Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. - 16477

Our aim was to pay of the mortgage as soon as we could

By Rem

Many couples looking to purchase a home consider whether a long run fixed rate mortgage would be best for their monthly installments. Currently, many of us are waiting until later in life to purchase a home but still want to have the house payed off as soon as possible. But, before you commit yourself and sign any papers, there are a number of issues you should consider.

Over the course of the loan, it's important to recall to make sure the interest rate doesn't alter. If you are offered a deal that appears to be too good to be true than it likely is. Loans arranged for a long run fixed rate mortgage keep the same interest rate throughout the entire life of the loan agreement.

There are no hidden surprises which is great for many individuals that want a regular monthly mortgage payment. Both my wife and I decided to research fixed rate mortgages when we started looking at homes for sale. Although it was essential for us to pay off our loan as soon as we could, we didn't want high, unrealistic monthly repayments which we would have a problem keeping.

It became manifest that we had to look at fixed rate mortgages over a extended period and not just fifteen year fixed mortgage rate programs. We didn't really like the idea of having a mortgage as we drew close to the age of retiring so we were really hoping to get one of the loans with a shorter fifteen year fixed rate mortgage. There was obviously very good reasons to finish paying the mortgage off earlier if at all possible.

We felt there was a lot of insistence to have the house paid off as soon as possible and for the most part we agreed with this. Discovering my wife was pregnant was the clincher, although this wasn't the only reason we reached this decision. Because my wife preferred to be at home for our child, her financial income would be unsure and unreliable. Also, loans for a fifteen year fixed mortgage rate required a higher monthly payment. For us it just wasn't practicable as we would just be in over our heads and probably be worrying about money every month.

Despite the trepidation of having a longer term loan, the thirty years fixed mortgage rate did lower the monthly installments considerably. Also, where possible, making a few additional lump sum repayments during the year helps bring down the sum of money owed. Just by making a handful of extra payments throughout a one year period you can knock years off of your mortgage period. Although this isn't easy to achieve, in the long run it is well worth it. Taking our current needs and financial abilities into account was more serious than our desire for a shorter term fifteen year fixed mortgage rate program. But looking back, everything worked out right for us in the long run. - 16477

Here Are Some Ideas For Your Bathroom

By Noel Wortinger

With all the home improvement television shows and magazines available, many of us are eager to get started updating our homes. Still, it's hard to get the courage to actually pick up that hammer and screwdriver and get started. Our recommendation is to start on the smallest room of your house - the bathroom.

The bathroom is an ideal place to start because it is so small. A small room calls for small projects that can easily be done by one or two people. Here are some ideas you can try to improve your bathroom.

You may consider replacing worn-out tile or installing some new fixtures. While you might be intimidated by any home improvement projects, these two are fairly easily to accomplish. Just be sure to plan exactly what you want to do. Read all instructions carefully and be sure you understand them. Act them out like a mime before you actually do the work. If there are things you don't understand, ask for help from a friend or from someone at your local home improvement store. They really are there to help you.

One popular bathroom project these days is to replace the toilet. The newer versions available are designed to save water. Not only are these newer toilets earth friendly, they can also save on your water bill. Likewise, installing energy efficient lighting is a popular option.

Once you've performed some of these small projects, you may be ready to consider something bigger. For instance, you may want to enlarge your bathroom by knocking down a wall. By doing this, you can completely rearrange the space. Again, with a little planning, you should be able to do most of the work yourself. It may be scary for you to consider knocking down a wall; it can be done and done right. Just be sure it is not a load-bearing wall.

When you look for materials for your bathroom renovations, be sure to consider your finances. Don't just buy the first items you see: by looking around, you may find a great deal on some items. Think about how you want your finished bathroom to look. Be sure you take the tastes of your spouse into account as well. You want the whole room to look "pulled together" and also to be pleasing to everyone who lives there.

Before you start work, make sure you and your families have other restroom options, especially if there are small children in the household. If the project will take more than a few days, figure out how to get showers and baths done. You may have to visit a neighbor or family member.

By carefully planning out your bathroom renovation project, you will see how easy it can be. Plan things carefully and be patient: Your smallest room may soon be your favorite room. - 16477

Solutions for Efficient Central Heating

By Tal Potishman

With the winter season quickly approaching, central heating for your home becomes a priority. In order to keep your home warm, all components of your central heating system must be in proper working order. However, there are some typical faults with the system that tend to happen at the worst possible time. One such common problem is frost damage, which can damage and sometimes destroy boilers and pipes.

In previous years, the central heating system was designed with the frost thermostat located near the boiler. Its job was to start the boiler when the air temperature dropped and stop the boiler when the air temperature reached an acceptable level. If the thermostat detected excessive heat escaping from the boiler or surrounding pipes it quickly turned off the system, in order to conserve energy and prevent excessive heating of the home.

In recent years, the boiler and nearby pipes have been insulated much better (thus effectively saving energy) that the frost thermostat can no longer effectively determine when the air temperature has reached the requested degree. This can prove to be problematic, as it may lead to overheating.

Installing a pipe thermostat can solve this problem. A pipe thermostat is typically placed on the outside of the boiler return pipe, measuring the temperature of the pipe (assuming copper pipes are good heat conductive materials). Its purpose is to turn off the boiler before overheating occurs. There are several new products that contain both a frost thermostat and low limit pipe thermostat, providing standard room temperature setting capabilities along with frost protection capabilities.

Set up and installation of the thermostats is easy and user friendly. Directions for installation and wiring arrive along with the product, all in one kit. Frost thermostats are commonly set to 5C and pipe thermostats are usually set to 25C. If you have additional exposed pipes (e.g in the garage), extra thermostats can be bought to secure your central heating system completely.

Another heating regulation solution is the fully programmable room thermostat. Such devices are normally installed inside the living area (typically the hallway or the living room) to take a typical measure of the room temperature. Modern designs can be set to alter the temperature several times throughout the course of a day. More recent kits have wireless models that operate via a radio signal from the thermostat to the boiler. Such RF (Radio Frequency) thermostats are easy to install as they do not require wiring, but rather use a secure radio frequency to relay their reading to the boiler control unit.

However, it is important to note that a thermostat is not the only way to heat your home in the most effective way. Adjusting the zones where heat is distributed can be a big energy saver. Focus heat where most time is spent and allow rooms that are not frequently used to remain cooler. This simple change will impact the efficiency of your central heating system greatly and help you reduce your heating bills. - 16477

How To Water Your Plant

By Keith Markensen

Watering your garden can be tricky enough when it is raining plenty. You may take it for granted while it's there, but once it's gone, you will truly realize its importance in keeping your garden healthy. Especially in times of drought, it's necessary to consider how you water your garden, conserving water but still keeping your plants healthy. Here are a few things you can do to make the best use of the water you use on your plants:

Use plenty of mulch around your plants. Mulch will keep water from evaporating out of the soil. Organic much like grass clippings or wood chips can also help add organic matter to the soil. However, plastic mulches also work for limiting evaporation. You can lay plastic mulching between rows in your vegetable garden. However, keep in mind that this will also limit the water that reaches the soil underneath.

Use the water where it will do the most good. Plants need water in their roots. Sprinklers do not do the best job of this, because too much water lands on the leaves, evaporating before it ever reaches the grant. Instead, you should slowly and gently water at the base of the plants. This will be most efficient because it allows the water to soak into the soil.

If your water is limited, water the plants that need it most. In drought conditions, you should use the water on newly planted trees, shrubs, and flowers. Their limited root systems will suffer from the lack of water. Well-established plants, especially if you have chosen those that are native to the area and therefore used to less water, will be more likely to survive droughts with little damage.

Also consider when you are watering. You should water your plants in the early morning, before it has become hot. This will limit the amount of water that evaporates, because it will have soaked into the soil before the heat of the day. It will also supply plants with enough moisture to make it through the sunniest part of the day.

One way to water many plants efficiently is to install a drip or trickle irrigation systems. Many of these are inexpensive and easy to install. They provide small amounts of water at the base of individual plants. Unlike sprinklers, drip irrigation systems deliver the water right where it is needed.

To conserve water, consider collecting water from your downspouts during rains. You can actually collect a significant amount of waters this way. Plants, such as dracaena fragrans, that have low water can also help. During dry spells, use this to water your plants, limiting your use of tap water in the garden.

Even in times of drought, there are steps you can take to use your water wisely and still keep your plants healthy! - 16477

Indoor Garden

By Thomas Fryd

Just because you may live in an apartment, does not mean you cannot enjoy the beauty of houseplants. While the prospect of lawn care is removed, this does not mean you have to restrict yourself to plastic plants. There are several beautiful varieties available and your options are limitless.

Consider the environment of the room you would like to enhance. This will help you decide where to place your plants. Perhaps your bathroom could use some sprucing up! Because this is the most humid room in the house, you have to consider which type of plants will thrive in this atmosphere. There are plenty of places besides the kitchen window sill, where you can put plants to beautify your home.

You may even consider using dried, silk or artificial flowers in place of live plants, in your garden. Dried roses, lavender, african violet flowers, or babies breath will look absolutely stunning tied in a bow and placed in various location. The advantages of using dried flowers or herbs is that they are fragrant and last for a long time; not to mention that you do not need any care instructions guide just to have them last for a long time.

You could even use one of your rooms specifically as a greenhouse. This area would be designated as your indoor gardening space. It should be a room with large windows or perhaps you could use a balcony, if you have one. Adding overstuffed chairs, fluffy pillows and soothing colors will make this room a favorite all year round.

Many people who live in apartments, find creative ways to garden indoors. They have herb gardens, that are commonly located on a window sill in the kitchen. This makes them easily accessible for you when cooking. You can buy herb seeds in a kit or you can go to your local garden center and get the seeds and some decorative pots. Herbs provide a variety of wonderful aromas and grow in strong sunlight. Just think of how good your food will taste with fresh herbs added. - 16477

Roof Moss an Affordable Way to Remove it

By John Redihan

The majority of home owners never consider roof cleaning as part of their home maintenance upkeep. Home owner insurance policies are being canceled nationwide when insurance representatives notice moss on roofs. The moss is alive and eating its way thru the roofing material, causing water and ice backups that can lead leaks and costly repairs.

Once the moss spore has landed an attached itself to a roof it spreads like dandelions. A roof has food, limestone in asphalt shingles and wood particles in cedar roofs that moss seem to love. Moss usually can only be found under the shade of a tree or on the north side of the roof because direct sunlight will not allow the moss to grow, so given the right conditions, moss will spread and cause serious structural damage to any roof.

Removing roof moss is hazardous work and can be quite expensive, although home owners with general maintenance skills can accomplish this by themselves with the help of the right roof moss removing product and a couple hours of work.

Not all moss removal products are effective enough to remove the roots of the moss along with the flower and that is the key, removing the roots, if not it is just like using straight water, it is only a temporary fix when the roots are not removed because the following season the moss will be back in full bloom.

Caution should be taken when using bleach to remove roof moss or for any reason on a roof. Bleach relentlessly dries the surface that it comes in contact with, usually resulting in stains; the stains are because the surface has been damaged. The damage bleach can cause on a roof can be in the form of discoloration and excessive drying that will result in cracking of the roof material. Bleach is something that I would recommend avoiding when it comes to roof cleaning.

There are professional roof cleaning companies that can remove the moss for you, as always I recommend seeing some "before and after" pictures, talking directly with their references, checking insurance policies and making sure that they are using an Eco-Safe cleaning agent before along them to work on the roof.

A second option that is very successful is to do it yourself, the right moss removing chemicals can just be sprayed on the roof moss, causing it to turn brown and dry up. Then with Mother Nature's help, the wind and the rain will rinse the dry moss from the roof. The only downfall, if you can call it one is that it takes about 90 days to see the final results but you are saving hundreds of dollars and getting basically the same results. - 16477

Bathroom vanity for sleek restrooms

By Superior Home Decor

When you set out to add an elegant look to your existing water closet you need to be sure that you pick out the appropriate bathroom vanity. The feature you need to be concerned with most in your water closet is the mirror.
According to most professional interior designers the mirror is considered the focal point (center) of your water closet. The reason for this is because the mirror is recognized as a central element in any water closet. The other reason is because your friends and family enjoy being able to check their appearance before they walk out the door.

Even most public restrooms have bathroom vanity mirrors, and if you are looking to create an elegant presence in your bathroom you certainly do not want to have the same type of mirror in your restroom. Thus, you should know that a plain sheet of glass is completely out of the question, which many older houses have as the standard. If this is the case in your restroom, you should automatically know that is going to have to go.

When you're up for the challenge of introducing an all new style into your water closet you should first try changing the existing fixtures with a silver finish. The silver style is not only very easy to clean but it will give your water closet a great new look. There are many different varieties of trim to add to your bathroom vanity. By adding a silver touch to your water closet design theme it can add that personal touch that it may have been missing all along.

Another advantage to choosing silver tone accents for your bathroom vanity it can be a very versatile style especially if you decide to alter the theme of your water closet down the road. Take for example how many people choose to have some type of an underwater or nautical type theme in their water closet. These silver toned accents will help bring the nautical theme together if you use it in an older water closet.

The first step to creating a sleek bathroom is choosing your bathroom vanity and from there you can personalize it with numerous accessories. By adding silver toned towel hangers to the wall and on the back of the door can help coordinate the theme together properly. To add an elegant touch, install glass shelving on the wall to display your beauty products and a few candles. You need to make sure that you carry the silver tones throughout the entire bathroom.

Choosing the bathroom vanity is the first step when it comes to the overall design plan of your relaxing and tasteful water closet. Then you can begin your personalizing of it with all the accoutrements. This is what you would consider the personal touch. If you are looking to add a more majestic touch you can install some glass shelves on the water closet wall. These shelves can be used to display just about anything. Keep in mind you need to utilize silver tones throughout the water closet. In the end it is entirely up to you to pick out the right mirror to hangs over the bathroom vanity. - 16477

Polished Concrete: A Growing New Trend

By Allen Strong

So you're considering a new theme for your living room but couldn't think of something revolutionary enough to impress your friends whose floors are as glamorous as the White House's. The interior designer you hired for the job seemed to be giving ideas too far out for you to even consider. He's suggesting you stick with concrete. Obviously you think he's out of his mind. But you know, your interior designer might be on to something.

Concrete might seem too drab, too boring, too gray for anyone's taste. Well let me tell you something, it doesn't have to be. This old material has been through a lot and just like a veteran, its glory never gets outshined. There are many people who are putting a new spin to old concrete. You are definitely going to be impressed with the new techniques contractors everywhere are using that makes sure that concrete will never be the same again.

Polished concrete is increasing in popularity amongst interior designers all over and it's no wonder. The possibilities for this shiny new design are endless. Polishing concrete involves using a material impregnated with diamond dust to remove obvious flaws and other unpleasant holes from the surface of the concrete. the bit increases in power depending on the sheen tht we want.

If the concrete floor is too unbalanced, or there are too many huge bumps and cracks, then placing a new layer of concrete on top of it is very advisable. The good news about this is, because of new materials like cement pigments and such, while the cement mixture is still wet, you can add some coloring to it and the concrete's image changes drastically.

There are many available information found on the internet about the advantages of using these new techniques, in case you're having second thoughts. If you're thinking that concrete can be too damp for your taste, then there are ways to solve problems like that too. You can try using vapor barriers to block moisture from getting through. More solutions are easy to find on the internet.

So what are you waiting for? Contact a contractor now so you can enjoy the new side of this old building material. More and more people are really getting into it and so should you. - 16477

When To Call A Plumber

By Nestor Wuplint

Owning a home is a wonderful experience, but can also carry with it many responsibilities. When you are a renter and something breaks down, you just call the landlord and he'll send someone to fix things for you. When you are the owner, however, the responsibility of repairs falls on your shoulders.

Most young couples and homeowners will try to do as much as possible without have to call a repairperson and pay labor. There are many repairs in the home that you may not be able to fix yourself. One of these things is a plugged pipe. It's tough to know when to call a plumber.

Plumbing may seem like a simple enough task, but if you don't know what you,'re doing or have the right tools, it may take twice as long as it should to find and fix the problem. Plumbers are generally expensive, charging a flat rate just to come to your home without even doing any work. Therefore, you'll want to make sure that you can't figure out and fix the problem yourself. With this in mind, there are some simple steps you can take to save money on plumbers.

The first thing you want to do is compare plumbers. I know you probably feel you have a disaster in your home (flooding sink or toilet) and need any plumber you can get as soon as possible, but you still want to save as much money as you can. This is not to say that you should call the cheapest in the phone book, as you don't want some fly-by-night coming into your home ripping your pipes apart. However, call around and compare mileage, hourly rates and service call rate. Another thing you will want to do is call the plumber with the best reputation for cost and customer satisfaction. It won't matter how cheap he was if you weren't happy with his or her work.

There are some important steps you can take to make sure you don't need a plumber or if you do, it's for minimal needs. Live your life in your home in such a way as to avoid having to call a plumber. Most plumbers are called for backed up drain problems. Watch what goes down your pipes. Grease is the biggest culprit. Many people feel that if they pour hot water down their pipes, it will help the grease go down better. It helps it to a point, but grease still has a way of sticking to the pipes causing problems. If your sink is plugged, try pouring hot vinegar and hot water down the pipes to unclog them. Pour the hot vinegar first, let it sit for twenty minutes and then pour the hot water. Many homeowners pour this solution down their pipes daily to keep their pipes clean.

Hair is another problem to drains. Using a mesh catch will usually eliminate the problem. If your drain is clogged with, what you believe is hair, try using a commercial drain cleaner. They're inexpensive, effective and a lot cheaper than calling a plumber. - 16477

Problems Such As Sub-Flooring Should Be Addressed

By Neil Wenk

Depending on the tiles you buy for your do-it-yourself project, your instructions will differ. Instructions will tell you to put tiles onto a super clean surface. Eighty percent of of the work is a clean floor. For example, if you are re-tiling an existing floor, all of the old wood, chipped tile, any vinyl, glue must be stripped or chiseled from the floor. Problems such as sub-flooring should be addressed at this time. Even the most careful installation of premium tile products will give unsatisfactory results if the concrete floors sub-plywood planks are rotting. Moister is the enemy the birthplace of mildew in any floor installation. Especially where a concrete floor bed may be concerned, if the moister problems are left, these problems will only continue to expand beneath the tile, leading to early destruction.

The finish or edge of your tiling project must be professional-looking. You've heard the expression where 'the rubber meets the road.' Now think about where your wall meets your floor. An important part of DIY flooring is that the area needs to be well cleaned before you begin to lay the fresh tiles. Sub-flooring, plywood, or pressboard flooring is often required when laying tile over concrete. If you leave gaps the tile will crack as the concrete shifts during natural earth movements.

Installation
1. At this point calculate the square footage and number of tiles you need. Be sure to add in partial tiles but calculate them as whole ones. (You will cut them later) You may want to consider using partial tiles along one edge of the floor only. So that the symmetry of the floor will stay in tact.

2.Test your pattern if any, by putting down several with no glue. Some DIY flooring manufacturers of tile use a tongue-and-groove system for ease of installation.

3.Next, if you're using pressure sensitive tiles, remove the backing and put them down starting at one wall. If you're going to use partial tiles along one edge of the floor only then start at that wall. Should you plan on partial tiles all around the edges of the floor then start in the center of the floor and build outward. For tiles with no tongue-and-groove system, it can be helpful to set down tiles not using adhesive.

When putting down ordinary tiles, lay tiles out in a few straight lines. Then, with a stout black pencil mark lines between them. Next, as you apply the tile adhesive press the tile into place, takes straight edge T-square as it sets, and keeps the tiles in one line. Lay tiles carefully. Follow this process until the floor is complete. In DIY flooring with tiles, be aware of drying time. Take the caulking gun and spread a 'bead' of grout between the tiles. Speedily wipe off the excess. It'll mare like crazy. Do this until the floor is complete. - 16477

Choose The Right Interior Design Course

By Chris Dohlander

Choosing the right interior design course can be an intimidating task. Here are some tips to help you choose the right one.

First of all, consider why you want to learn about interior design. Do you want to redo your home and just want some tips? Do you want to become a professional with your own design business? Do you work in the building trades or at a home furnishings business and want to enhance your skills? These are all great reasons to take an interior design program.

Now consider your current life. Do you have work or family obligations? Then going to a brick-and-mortar school may be difficult for you. In these days of high fuel costs, the additional mileage may break the budget more than you realize. Can you take a bus there or carpool with another student? Remember to include travel time when you you're your schedule.

There are plenty of good interior design programs available online. Perhaps you should consider one of them. However, keep in mind that it may be difficult to follow the program at home if you have small children or pets underfoot. Be sure you can regularly set aside a block of time to follow the course. You may need to shut the door, unplug your phone and close your country drapes in order to concentrate at the task at hand.

As you consider programs, make sure it is properly accredited. This is especially important if you want to become a design professional. Future employers want to know that you learned the correct information. Also, it will be easier to secure a student loan or grant if you attend a properly accredited school.

Carefully read the course information. Does it seem easy to understand? Does it cover the information you want or need? What type of homework assignments are you likely to get? If possible, find out about the instructor? Is he or she easy to reach? Are they interior design professionals? While having an interior designer as an instructor can be good for the inside knowledge he or she has, a professional may be difficult to reach outside of class if you have a question or problem.

If you choose a brick-and-mortar school, is there more than one session of the course you are taking? If not and a personal emergency happens, will you be able to make up the coursework. Likewise, if you cannot finish, will you be able to get at least a partial refund? Even if you are sure you will finish, it is best to know the school's policies on such matters.

By thinking over these tips, you should be able to find the right design course to meet your needs and those of your family. Once you've started the program, you will be on your way to a whole new career in a very lucrative field. - 16477

Caring for Indoor Plants And How to Choose Them

By Kent Higgins

When deciding how to decorate the interior of your home, plants can be just as important as furniture, because they drastically change the visual impact of the room. Plastic plants are very popular for this purpose, but artificial plants can collect dust, and may look a little silly to visitors.

Because of the drawbacks of artificial plants, why not try your hand at growing the real thing? Indoor gardening can be quite easy. Aside from the beauty of indoor plants, they also provide health benefits. After all, as we learned in grade school, plants clean the air by using the carbon dioxide we breath and producing more oxygen.

Many beginning gardeners become overwhelmed with trying to choose and care for houseplants. If you are a beginning gardener, here are some simple tips to help you be successful at growing a beautiful garden right inside the comforts of your own home.

Lighting is very important to the growth of house plants. Each type of plant has a requirement for how much light it will need. First, you need to decide which part of the house will be home to the new plants. This will help you decide which kind of plant will grow best. There are many plants which only require medium to low light, and are suitable for indoor gardening. Some common examples include Philodendrons, Boston ferns, African violets, Cyclamens, and Creeping Fig.

Another important task to consider is watering. Many beginning gardeners make the mistake of over-watering their indoor plants, which can harm the roots. You should research your specific plant, because each kind has varying water needs.

Most indoor plants will require the use of pots or other containers. You should make sure that the pot is clean before placing your new plant in it, which will prevent infection and encourage healthy growth. Pot size and other characteristics are also important, and will depend on the plant you choose.

Humidity is another factor which can be difficult for the beginning gardener, but it is very important to your plants. The amount of moisture in the air affects the growth of your plants. During the morning, you should spray the plants with water from a spray bottle, which will provide them with much needed moisture.

Fertilization is another factor to consider when choosing outdoor or indoor plants. Like watering, fertilization needs depend on the type of common indoor plant you have chosen. If you supply your plants with the right amount of light, water, and humidity, you may not need much fertilizer for your plants to thrive.

With these tips in mind, you can forego the plastic plants in favor of the real thing. They will add beauty to your home, and can be easy to grow if you choose the right plants. - 16477

Interior Design For Non-Designers

By Claudio Carbeni

Do you love wild and crazy wall colors while your spouse is more of a neutral and beige kind of person? Have you been butting heads about re-decorating and you just can't seem to come to an agreement about what you want to do in your house? With do-it-yourself decorating and design you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Perhaps interior design school is just what the doctor ordered for you.

Risk Free Paint

You can check out local stores, houses, or restaurants for real-life ideas to do your best interior design. With a computer program you can upload a picture of the room you want to work on and test out different paint colors and moldings as well as oriental design methods and even priscilla curtains. Your living room can go from beige to chartreuse to puce to yellow in a matter of minutes without dragging out the painter's tape, brushes, drop cloths, and waiting in line at the paint counter for them to mix the wrong color paint

Moldings Without Endings

Putting crown molding up is a project that most homeowners feel pretty confident about in the planning stages but when it comes down to it there is a very complex formula for measuring the angle where the corners meet and it's likely that unless you're a professional or have someone to help you who has done lots of crown molding cutting that you will have spent a lot of time, effort, and money on a bunch of scrap wood by the time you're done. Not to mention the fact that you might get the molding up and hate it.

Remodeling

Being a veteran of the remodeling highs and lows is not a prerequisite for actually jumping in and giving do-it-yourself projects a try! Pick up that hammer and if you miss the nail and break the window then you know to be a little more careful the next time around. Try something new - you might be surprised to find that grouting tile is the most fun you have ever had in your life. Perhaps you will have found yourself a new career choice?

Using a 3-d model to picture the ways that your home "could" look can be really useful. If you see a picture in a magazine of a room that you like take that idea and interpret it your own way by using the colors that are shown in the magazine photo in the room with your accessories such as curtains. Try some throw pillows, they are very inexpensive and can work wonders in changing the look of any room. Except the bathroom. Most people don't have throw pillows in their bathrooms. But then again you might be able to start a fashion trend. I have seen a toilet with a phone attached to the wall next to it at someone's house

Move your furniture around. Get everything away from the wall and try a new arrangement. Listen when someone suggests putting the armchair where you would think it looks hideous. Usually this ends up being the placement you love!

There are so many different ways to remodel your home - from doing it virtually online first to actually going to the store to purchase the materials to getting elbow deep in drywall dust and joint compound, home remodeling can be quite a lot of fun! - 16477

Bathroom vanity is the life of the room

By Superior Home Decor

When redecorating your bathroom, many people do not consider the bathroom vanity being the most crucial piece. However, when designing your bathroom the mirror is used as the centerpiece. The reason behind it all is because people like to check their appearance in the mirror before moving on with their daily lives. It becomes a habit for most. When designing your bathroom make sure to include a mirror because people expect it.

Thus, you know that every guest in your home who uses the restroom, which by the way is the most trafficked area of your home, is going to notice what type of bathroom vanity mirror you have while using the facility. If you do not have a cohesive vanity that matches the theme of your bathroom, your decorating taste is going to appear to be in poor taste and shoddily thrown together.

Also, you need to keep in mind that your bathroom vanity holds an extra value in your home because it is the one large item in your bathroom that you have control over. The equivalent to furniture in your restroom is the toilet, sink, and shower. For most people, these are not replaceable items, and due to your piping, they are also not items that can be rearranged.

When designing your bathroom with a specific theme, you have total control over the bathroom vanity mirror. This mirror can be personalized to your taste of style which you want to carry out throughout the entire bathroom. No matter how ridiculous it may sound it is completely true.

Another thought when designing your bathroom is that you could use a natural stained wood floor. When you match the color of the bathroom vanity with your flooring it will create a natural feel and add warmth to your bathroom.

When you are out looking at accessories you will need to look for the appropriate types that will match the wood on the bathroom vanity. You may want to add a personal touch by purchasing a wooden potpourri holder to place on each side of the vanity mirror. This will add some pleasant smells throughout the bathroom and show off the detail in the frame of the mirror.

Add towel racks that are made out wood which will coincide with your bathroom vanity. This will bring the bathroom theme together. If you choose a vanity that stands out for the entire bathroom, this will cause a distraction and will be an eye sore to your guests. So make sure that you choose the right vanity for your type of theme. - 16477

Tips When Tiling your Bathroom

By Soren Bolbenk

You can add some extra flare and color into your bathroom by using some attractive decorative bathroom wall tiles. You should start the design by deciding which tile you will use as the main tile in your bathroom. Larger tiles are starting to become very popular and are commonly made from porcelain, ceramic, limestone or marble.

There are a lot of different choices when it comes to tiles, nobody has to settle just for the 4-by-4 tile anymore. You can purchase tiles in various shapes, including rectangles, and twelve inch tiles. These will allow you to create a beautiful bathroom. If you are concerned about going over the top then just keep your tiling confined to the shower and bath area.

Options for Design

There are many different options available when you are looking to tile your wall decoratively. There are border tiles which have a rope design, or shells. There are many different tiles to suit many different themes. You can also find porcelain tiles and glass tiles in a variety of different colors. If you're considering tiling your bathroom then you have plenty of choice.

There are also various changes in fashionable finishes. Shiny wall tiles used to be popular, however now matte and rustic tile designs are very popular in bathroom design. You can also buy limestone and marble tiles which can create a sophisticated look with soft colors.

If you want to create soft earthy tones for your bathroom you should consider cream and sage colors. Natural stones and granite work very well with such color schemes. For an antique look you should consider using marble tiles. Glass and metal tiles are well suited to create accents and attractive borders.

You can use many of these different materials together as long as you mix them together correctly. You need to carefully consider shades, textures and different color tones of your tile as well as blinds and wallpaper. Anything can be placed together as long as you think about it carefully. As long as the colors are allowed to work well together then anything can be put together. You will be able to create perfect bathroom tile designs if you plan it correctly. - 16477

Get Your Appliances And Garage Items Ready For Storage

By The Affordable Storage Guy

Greetings! Here are some more excellent ideas on how to pack your appliances and ranch items for storage.

Let's begin with the biggest items first. Large appliances should be clean and dry with all moveable parts secured. Smaller appliances may be cleaned and then packed together in clearly marked boxes. Cushion with sufficient padding to keep movement to a minimum within the box.

You can keep your electrical cords neat and tidy by taping them to the appliances they belong to. if there is any risk of the knobs being damaged or lost during the move, take them off and store them in a plastic bag.

Washing Machines - Drain and remove all water from tub and hoses. Brace tub to prevent damage during moving by wedging padding between the tub and the sides of the washer. Secure spring mounted motors.

Dishwashers - These must have the water drained from the hoses and interior. Thoroughly clean and dry and wrap all moveable parts that could scratch the interior or be damaged themselves during moving.

Stove - After the stove has been cleaned and disconnected, remove all of the pans and racks and wrapped them separately. Finally, if you're worried about the burners or elements, you can use some tape to hold them in place.

Refrigerators and Freezers - Leave yourself about three days for defrosting and cleaning. Tape the doors shut during the move but, while in storage, the doors need to be kept slightly open to prevent mildew. During the move you can use the inside to store lightweight items such as pillows or stuffed toys.

Electronic Equipment - These items should be repacked in their original shipping containers with foam inserts. If the original boxes are no longer available, pack the equipment tightly with plenty of foam padding or bubble wrap. Remove all detachable cables and wiring. Label carefully for quick reinstallation. Carefully secure all moveable parts.

Lawn and Garage Items - Drain all gasoline and oil from lawn mowers, weed eaters and other equipment. All batteries should be disconnected. Tie loose items like rakes and hoes together.

Sports Equipment - Small items like balls, rackets and shoes can easily fit into moderate or small boxes without any problems at all. Bigger items like skis and snowboards can be stored without any additional packing whatsoever; however if you'd like a to keep the dust off them, put them in a large plastic mattress bag.

Bikes - If you're going to leave your items in storage for a long time, you should make sure that the chain has got some fresh oil on it. If space is an issue you can remove the petals and seat and turn the handle bars in as well. Sometimes storage units do get dusty and if you'd like to keep your bike clean, you should put it in a box or store it in a plastic mattress bag. - 16477

How To Plant Several Plants At A time

By Thomas Fryd

If you plan to grow more than one or two plants at a time, it's likely that most of them will fall under the category of "foliage." These may not be as showy as flowering plants, but they are the base that make those flowers look so good. These are easily grown and are not hard to take care of if you know a few simple things about them.

First and foremost, foliage plants are the backbone and basis for almost every garden or flower arrangement. This is because without the green and plant-filled background, all you have are flowers and dirt. They usually are not season-specific, showing green all year round. This makes them ideal ground cover as well. There are literally thousands of varieties grown today.

Your choice of foliage will be determined by climate, space, size and shape of leaves, and the overall size of the plant. Once you know these things, you can pick some plants and begin planting them. Whether it's in containers, on a patio, or in a garden, you'll find that foliage plants are relatively easy to put into the soil and even easier to care for.

A tremendously popular foliage plant is the rubber plant (aka "rubber tree") that seems to be ubiquitous to very home and apartment. These plants are very easy to care for and require little maintenance or work on your part. Just pick the proper-sized pot, water occasionally, and ad nutrients rarely and the rubber plant will thrive. Many foliage plants are similar in their care and needs.

Sansevieria is a widely known plant, usually called the "Snake Plant." It lives and grows easily at room temperature and requires almost as little maintenance as the rubber plant. They are beautiful and need little sun to do well. You can propagate this plant by making cutting of the stems and allowing them to sprout roots in water.

Another popular species is known as the "Wandering Jew," or Tradescantia or Zebrina. These are smaller versions of the same plant, which have long and narrow pointed leaves. They are very decorative and hardy and are popular basket plants that can add a splash when you are building a container garden or building garden steps outdoors. They hang well and enjoy partial sun and warm temperatures indoors or in shaded garden areas. They sprout purple and white flowers every spring.

All of these plants and many, many more are great indoor foliage that can ad a splash of life to any room or become the background for a great flower box. - 16477

The Moody Ficus Tree

By Thomas Fryd

Most people who do not have horticultural qualifications would not be aware that there are indeed many hundreds of variations of the ficus species. One of the more commonly seen indoor plants these days is the "Ficus benjamina". This is the variety that most people think about when they think "ficus". It is an ornamental tree and is also known by its common name of "weeping fig tree". It is a popular choice as a bonsai specimen.

Tree "Moods" The ficus tree is temperamental and can be "moody" depending upon its care regime. This change of mood can occur when it is given too little water, too much water, exposure to too much light, exposure to too little light or moving it a few inches away from a "preferred" spot. It will drop leaves when the smallest change is made to its environment. As such, the placement of the tree should be made very carefully - you won't want to move it except in extreme situations - there is too much at stake!

It's All About The Water! Many ficus owners fall into the trap of over watering their plant; this will cause the leaves to change color. It is wise to check the moisture level of the soil around your ficus by sticking your finger into the soil. If there is evidence of moisture even a few inches below the surface, don't give it any more! If, however, all you feel is dry soil, then it should be given a good soak. Avoid giving the plant extra water if the leaves have started to turn yellow; this indicates that the plant has already had enough water!

Most ficus thrive in humid conditoins. Your home is not necessarily going to be humid enough for the ficus, so you will have to "mist' the plant a number of times during the day to imitate the natural conditions of the plant. You could also give the plant humidity by using a humidity tray. This is simply a saucer from a pot that is filled with gravel or pebbles and which will collect any extra water; the extra water evaporates, creating the humid conditions needed by the ficus.

Steady Lights, Temps and Fertilizer The ficus needs a bright source of light that has been filtered; it needs to avoid full sun exposure during the daylight hours. You should also avoid placing the ficus plant where it will be exposed to heating and air conditoning vents as this will prevent the plant from obtaining a constant temperature in its environment.

The application of fertilizer each month during the growing season is vital to the health of the plant. Don't fertilize the plant during winter; as an alternative, use a slow release fertilizer during the growing season.

Final Hints To successfully raise a ficus tree, you need to have the patience of a saint and be serious about your gardening. This is especially true when you are keeping track of the watering regime during winter. If you are not confident enough to rely upon the "finger soil moisture" test, invest in a meter that will indicate the moisture level in the soil.

Remember that there are many things that the temperamental ficus can be affected by that will result in leaf dropping. Keep a close eye on water levels and light levels and don't forget to check drafts and humidity. The ficus is a fickle plant, so expect a "love-hate" relationship if you decide to have one! - 16477

Visit The Corporate Website For Home Improvement Stores

By Chester Ebenhart

Everyone wants a dream kitchen, but in today's tight economy, who can afford it? Here are some tips to help you get what you want without breaking the bank.

The trick to budget kitchen remodeling is to plan ahead. Think about exactly how you want your kitchen to look in the long run. Write a list of each thing you need to do to get you there. Keep in mind that it may be a long time before you can get all the work done, but if you have a good idea of how you want your kitchen to look, the finished work will look pulled together.

To get ideas, visit the corporate websites for the "big box" home improvement stores, such as Home Depot. You will find a lot of information to help you determine the best upgrades for your home. These stores also often host seminars to help you do much of the work yourself. You can also often special order products and even hire a contractor.

Next go online to get an idea of how much each part of the remodeling job will cost both in terms of material and in terms of labor.

Now try to plan how you will do the job: which work you will do first, etc. For example, it would be better to paint the walls first before you install new flooring or you will risk having paint splattered on the new floor.

One great way to save money is to do the work yourself. Painting is a fairly easy task that almost anyone can do. In addition to saving money, doing the work yourself is a way for your family to work together on a task, thus bringing you closer together.

However, before you decide to take on a task yourself, consider whether you have the time and the skills. If you work a 60-hour week, you will be too exhausted to install a new heating and cooling system. You also probably would not have the skills to do it right. Instead of bringing your family closer together, the irritation at not getting the work done may drive a wedge among the family. In that case it is worth the cost of hiring a contractor who will be able to get the job done quickly and correctly.

One family I know saves up their money to do their kitchen remodeling bit by bit. Every time they get $200 set aside, they consider if they are ready for another project. By tackling these projects a bit at a time, they are seeing a dramatic improvement in their kitchen.

If you plan ahead, your dream kitchen can become reality, even if you don't have a lot of money. Why not stop dreaming and start working on it today? You'll get there sooner than you think. - 16477

By Rudi Wolzett

Any backyard will profit from the addition of a revitalizing sound of a fountain. Even the hottest day is tolerable with the resonance of streaming water. Birds and wildlife will be engrossed by your new waterfall. However, all waterfalls have something in common; they use power siphons in order to stop the water from growing dormant, which leads to consequences such as an environment for bugs germs and mildew. These siphons pumps need power, which may not be that cheap. Because spray pumps require around the clock care they can result in a high-energy bill.

However, this doesn't suggest that you can't install a spray in your backyard. Instead, consider solar power spray fountains. Solar power fountains will set-up your spray with the same fuel that assists your garden - the sun. By putting in a solar sprayer, you won't have to pay for the inspirational and eye-catching addition to your backyard.

Solar Power Pumps
Solar energy fountain pumps use a solar pane that collects energy from the sun. The solar pump turns this energy into usable energy to keep the water flowing in your spray, fishpond, or cascade-flow. The gallons-per-hour ranking of the pump establishes the size of solar energy spray pumps you require.

There is another excellent power conserving aspect to solar energy spray pumps; on the brightest days the solar panel can bank energy to make certain your fountain remains running throughout the night and on into cloudy days. In addition, by having solar pumps you can place your spray anywhere in the backyard you wish as long as it is located close to direct sunlight. You don't have to concern yourself with situating the spray adjacent to electrical energy from you home or the garage or the pool area. The fact that it is solar energy permits placement anywhere you wish. With solar sprayers, you can have more than one spray in your yard.

Solar energy is very easy to understand. It has been a fact since time began. The oceans, and landmasses absorbed sunlight, and that kept the surface temperature at an average temperature of 14 C. The exchange of solar energy into chemical energy using photosynthesis is what produces food, wood and the biomass. That is what produces fossil fuels.

Solar radiation together with secondary solar assets like wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, accounts for over 99.9% of on hand renewable energy on earth.

Considering this fact, why not consider solar sprayer pumps for your garden. By utilizing these sprays you won't just save a lot of cash on your electricity bill, but you can design a beautiful backyard or atrium that'll have the whole neighborhood chatting.
