Diesel Marine Generator - Points To Consider Before Buying

By Adrian Fletcher

The purpose of a diesel marine generator is to provide a power source in locations where there is no reliable grid electricity and the location is close to a source of water. So, obviously they are found in marine vehicles like boats and ships and machinery in harbors or ports. however, they are also found in refrigeration plants that may have a lot of water slopping around.

Don't be surprised to find them used in large supermarkets too, as they need large refrigeration units and may need a backup system if grid electricity is unreliable. Basically such a generator will resist a certain amount of water and still operate.

A marine generator is different from a box standard generator in that it has a protective outer casing and individual parts that are more resistant to water.

For instance salt water is a catalyst for rust on many items of machinery. A marine generator will be made of sturdy material and will be treated with rust resistant paint. The innards or working parts of the generator are designed to work in environments where the atmosphere will be humid too.

When it comes to selecting a diesel marine generator you can go down two routes. You can buy a new model or a used model. People are often interested in used models because diesel marine generators are not a cheap piece of equipment and can be out of financial reach of many people.

People looking for a used option need to research the history of the unit they are buying (even used units can still be expensive). The least you need to know is how long it has be running and what kind of elements it has worked in.

For instance, some generators may have been dropped into water. This is not good for any generator regardless of whether it was designed for marine use or otherwise. Get a full service history too as this should highlight anything that the owner may be unwilling to mention.

Whether you go for a used or new marine generator, the next consideration is how much power you need from the generator. This depends on the uses you have. If it is used in a large boat that will power plenty of appliances then the wattage that the generator creates will need to be higher. Work out the load that your circumstances require before selecting a marine generator.

You also need to select the type of fuel that will run the generator. There are various types, from standard gasoline and diesel to natural gas.

You should look for certain brand names too when it comes to selecting a marine generator. The best brands to go for are Onan, Westerbeke, Kohler, Mase and Fischer Panda marine generators. They have a history and reputation in the industry and produce quality machinery.

Each manufacturer has all sorts of models that fit into different niches. I'd say that the capacity and price will ultimately help you decide which diesel marine generator is for you though. - 16477

Reasons to Consider Ductless Air Conditioning

By Pat Lowe

Ductless air conditioning is a relatively new way of cooling your home. These systems typically include both indoor and outdoor units. The compressor is installed outside the house. Two lines are run through the wall, which carry coolant to the indoor air handling units. Most systems feature more than one indoor unit, so you can place them in different areas of the house.

The most common reason for choosing ductless air conditioning is because of its energy efficiency. There's an easy explanation for this. The typical system using ducts has to move cold air down to the basement and then blow it back up throughout the house. The evaporator unit in a ductless air conditioning system is mounted high up in the room, almost to the ceiling. So the cold air can make its way down through the house without being forced by a fan. With gravity supplying most of the effort, you'll discover considerable savings on your energy bills.

With this type of air conditioning system, you can enjoy the benefits of more than one interior unit. This means that you can cool down only certain areas of the house as required. For instance, you can turn off the bedroom unit during the day. At the same time, your main living areas can still be kept comfortably cool. This move alone can cut your energy costs in half without even noticing the difference.

Since the cold air is released from near the ceiling, your floors won't be as cold as they can get with central air. In addition, the room will become cool much faster. This is due to the fact that the ductless unit produces air that is often much colder than a central or window air conditioning unit.

You can also get some handy accessories for your ductless air conditioning unit. Some models act as an air purifier, while others can dehumidify the air without cooling it down. There are those that feature slats that oscillate in order to help move the air through a wider area. Some units can even give you heat in the cold weather.

However, there are some downsides to ductless air conditioning. Usually they're more expensive than other cooling methods, as much as 30 percent. In addition, they most often need to be installed by a professional. This is somewhat more complicated than central air conditioning, and much more involved than installing a window air conditioner.

Overall, you might find that this is a good alternative to other forms of air conditioning. It's reliable and convenient. And over time you're likely to recover the added expense of this type of system. - 16477

Tips On Choosing A New Floor

By Alix Montoya

The available options for flooring types in the market is staggering. It can be very overwhelming if you don't know what to do. There are literally hundreds of options that you need to consider. Here are a few tips to narrow down the choices a little.

You should think about the overall look you're going for. Look at your house and try to determine what style goes with it best. If your architecture is more Mediterranean, then you might want to go with hardwood flooring. For a more modern feel, try granite floors or stone floors. Marble gives a sophisticated feel, while carpets make for a warm atmosphere.

Your budget is also an important factor to consider. Information on costs on all the available materials are readily available by calling contractors or just by searching the web. There are materials which will be more expensive than others and you have to think about how much are planning to shell out for this home improvement project beforehand.

You also have to decide on functionality. For example, your bedroom wouldn't go well with hard polished concrete. You also wouldn't want hardwood floors in a room where spills and other accidents are likely to happen like the kitchen. If you still feel clueless, you can try and get professional help.

The options for flooring types available is staggering and a little bit overwhelming at first glance. Try looking for professional help if your find yourself utterly clueless on what to do. Just think about what your home to look like and you won't be too disappointed. - 16477

A New Home Addition May Be Just What You Need

By Gordon T. Mayer

Things feeling cramped? It's as if your house shrank, closing in on the once comfy living quarters. There are plenty of options out there: buy need, build, remodel . . . but do any of them fit within your current reality? For most of us, the answer is a resounding "no". So what options do you have? The 3 season porch.

With the housing market in the slumps moving is impractical, with the economy down adding a large addition is unwise, so the 3 season porch becomes a choice more and more families are moving toward. Financially they make sense, not to mention they conversion potential they provide. If you future-proof your porch you can modify it into a sunroom when the time is right for you.

Why else build a 3 season porch?

* Increases your living space

* No need for insect repellant

* Your property value will significantly increase

When you begin the process of looking for a professional to help you, select the person that is willing to address the questions below:

* How is the porch going to tie in with the house?

* Your yard space is important. How can you build a porch without losing it?

* What would be necessary for future proofing (modifying the 3 season into a sunroom)? - 16477

By Sebastian Giovanni

One of the most important choices you will have to make when you are redecorating your bathroom is what type of Bathroom Vanity cabinetmirror you want to install above your sink. This is one of the first and last things your Visiters will notice when they enter and leave the bathroom, and since most people have to use the restroom during a visit, one thing you can almost guarantee will help create an image of your overall home.

Although it may be somewhat disheartening to realize that the Vanity is going to have such an impact on your visiters when you have painstakingly decorated your own home, it is still true. every person who uses the bathroom will check their appearance in the mirror afterwards. This is why you find a mirror in almost every public restroom as well as in people's residence.

Your lavatory redecoration plans should include steering away from plain themes. You need to create some type of energy in your lavatory since it is considered to be the most important room in your home. When searching for your new bathroom vanity you need to stick with your intended theme and also remember you want to push for positive vibes and a standout personality. You should definitely consider setting the mirror at eye level over the sink. This shows your guests that you were thinking of them. While choosing among the different styles of mirrors for your bathroom, you should be very conscious about the size you end up settling on for your Vanity. For example, if you have a large sink, but only a tiny mirror your bathroom is going to look off balanced and awkward. Along the same lines, if your countertop is small and you have a large mirror, the countertop will look even smaller in comparison.

A general rule of thumb is to aim for the same size, with only an inch or two up either way in proportion to how many feet long your sink is. For instance, a little larger Contemporary Bathroom Vanity will help fill up empty space in the bathroom without over powering the small sink. The trim should also be kept conditionally smaller so that the trim does not overstate the white empty wall as well.

For a larger sink, you may considering placing the Bath in the middle leaving a few inches to comfortably place accents in the bathroom that match the trimming of the mirror. A great look is a nice mirror that has either towel holders with the same trimming on either side or potpourri holders which also hold the double task of scenting the room pleasantly.

You are seeking the touches that show your personality to your guests. There are various styles and colors to choose from when buying a bathroom vanity and accessories. Just make sure that they represent you and that your guests will enjoy them. - 16477

Concrete Polishing and Pools

By Rick Amorey

The swimming pool out back is now gone.

Don't get me wrong, the pool is technically still there. It just hasn't been used in a long time, as it kept on draining the water. So, without being used, it slowly became a storage place for some of our unused, but not to be discarded, things. At the very least, having a lot of stuff in there is better than what happened to my neighbor's pool; she just can't keep the skaters away.

But now, as we've finally gotten a decent sum of money to fix up the pool, we decided to renovate. It dawned on us that we had little leftover to change the area around the pool, too. The very next day, we went hunting for a suitable type of tile which would work.

Unfortunately, looking around for tiles, we found out that our budget was not enough for the classier type of tiling. We didn't much like the cheaper types as the original tiles on the pool were still better. We took a vote, and then just decided to go home and lounge beside our newly renovated pool.

A friend of mine came over one day and had a chat beside the pool. He said something which interested me immensely. At the time, I didn't know but he suggested that I could add concrete tiling to the pool. The area surrounding is concrete to begin with; all that was left for me to do was find a contractor to work his magic on it.

And so that's how it happened: My friend directed me to the Concrete Polishing website, and very quickly, I met a contractor willing to help me out. He will come over the next week, and pretty soon the swimming pool will have a new polished, concrete floor. - 16477

3 Reasons To Have Residential Wind Power

By David Sullivan

If you're like most people, you'd love to save some money on your electricity bill. One thing you may not have thought about as a solution is to use a wind generator to supply energy for your home. You'll find that this can save you a large amount of money on your energy bills.

You can either buy a wind turbine or create one yourself from engineered blueprints. These are a few of the best reasons that you should own a wind generator in your own building.

One of the main reasons that wind power from a home wind generator is such a great idea is that this is a source of energy that is renewable. You don't ever have to worry about the wind depleting and going away. Everyone could have a wind turbine of their own and there would still be plenty of wind for everyone.

Fossil fuels are the primary energy source of the planet right now because they are the cheapest fuels and we have the widest infrastructure to distribute them around the world. They will eventually run out and they also pollute, however, so we need to start to look for and develop other energy sources such as wind power which will provide energy indefinitely.

Another point not to be missed is that a home wind generator is easy to build and install; of course, you could also elect to buy a pre-made wind generator for your home.

If you are thinking of doing it yourself, it is easier than you think. Simply buy some well-engineered plans for your wind generator and you'll be on your way. It will include instructions on how to build the blades and how to install the motor correctly to start pumping out power.

The savings from wind power is the number one reason to have a wind generator in your backyard. You will save a lot of money by owning one, and they don't cost much to build. You might spend 150-300$ building one on your own, and it could save you 40-100$ each month! Over the long term, you will be making money in only a few months. It could cut about 80% of your electric bill.

With all these great reasons, it's easy to see that wind power is an excellent idea. If you're ready to save money and use renewable forms of energy, then get some plans and begin building your own today. - 16477

Which Material Is Right For Your Wilmington Roofing Project?

By Jim Carpenter

A home needs not just good walls but a solid roof as well to ensure that it is protected well from what the elements can throw at it. Unfortunately as a home ages there are going to be times when the roof may need to be repaired or replaced. So in this article we offer some advice on what to do to ensure that you select the right kinds of material for your Wilmington roofing project or anywhere that you may happen to live.

The first thing one should be doing is to get a roofing contractor to come and have a look at your home and see exactly what needs to be done. It is best if you arrange for a couple of contractors to come and have a look and get each of them to give you a quotation for how much the work is going to cost.

After this has been done now you can decide which material it is you want to use on your Wilmington roofing project whether the roof is to be repaired or replaced. If the roof is just needing repairs to make it sound once more then the same materials as what is currently on the roof should be used. But if the roof needs to be replaced completely then you can either choose to stay with the same as what is on it currently or opt to go for something different instead. But you need to be aware that the various materials used for roofing are not only different in characteristics but also in cost as well.

Below we take a look at the types of materials used in many roofing projects across the USA and not just Wilmington and what their characteristics are.

1. Asphalt of all the roofing materials used today is the most commonly used and it comes in two varieties being non-organic or organic. This type of roofing has some advantages over the other two discussed in this article being that you can get it in a wide range of colors and also it is far more durable as well. The lifespan of a well laid asphalt roof is between 25 and 50 years.

2. Wood Shingles are often made from Western Red Cedar as it is very resistant to both corrosion and decay. Generally there are three types of wood shingles one can get for repairing or replacing a roof on a property and they are classed as being 1, 2 or 3. Generally because 1 is far more durable than 2 or 3 this is used for the main part of the roofing project whilst 2 and 3 are used for the sidings.

3. A material that is favored by many for roofing projects although it costs more but gives a roof a more natural look is wood shakes. The reason for this particular roofing costing so much more is that each piece needs to be sawed or hand split by the contractor so the time it takes to carry out the work correctly is much longer as well.

Once you have selected the material which you want used on your Wilmington roofing project now is the time to choose from the contractors you had initially to look at it. Ideally look to use the one that has actually carried out similar projects to yours using the materials you have chosen. This way not only will you know that the work will be done correctly, but you aren't going to be faced with the problem of getting the work redone in the near future. - 16477

Off The Grid Living - Why Consider It?

By B M Bean

Wouldn't it be nice in the future if you no longer had concern yourself with paying the utility bills on your home each month or to run your car. There are many people today who are able to do this because they have chosen off the grid living. In the US alone there has been a steady increase in the last few months of people opting to go for off the grid living. They are not only environmentally friendly but it is their way of reducing their yearly utility bills and has allowed them to become more self sufficient.

But when it comes off the grid living you don't need to have a home in the country to do so. This type of lifestyle can be carried out just about anywhere in the world today. Okay you may think off the grid living is where people decide to use water to provide energy to their home and to grow their own food, but this simply isn't the case. In fact as you will soon learn there are plenty of renewable energy sources that you could use on your home where you live now and so become another convert to off the grid living.

Okay water is a great renewable energy source for a home but you do need to be located by a stream or river to harness its power. However, for those that don't live close to such a source there are other types of renewable energy sources they can use, the most popular of these being wind and solar.

What reasons are there for you to consider off the grid living? Below we look at just a number of the advantages to be gained from this type of lifestyle which you may find very interesting and which may help you to then decide to do it.

1. Nowadays the cost of actually installing a renewable energy source system that provides you with the opportunity to generate electricity for your home has come down dramatically. The reason for this being is that there are many companies who are vying to get your business and will offer either to install the system for you or provide you with one that you can in fact install yourself.

2. You are helping to prevent further damage being caused to the environment in which we live. Through using renewable energy sources you are actually reducing the size of your carbon footprint and this will hopefully assist in slowing down the rate of global warming taking place.

3. Of course not only are you helping to save the planet on which we live but you are actually helping yourself by reducing the amount you spend each year on utility bills. In a matter of weeks of installing your DIY wind or solar powered system you will find that your electricity bills have been reduced.

So as you can see from above there are many reasons why so many people are now opting for off the grid living. - 16477

Why Having Your Own Wind Turbine Is Beneficial

By David Sullivan

Have you been thinking of ways to save money on your electricity bill? With the prices of energy constantly on the rise, it's almost certain that you've been giving it some serious thought. One of the ways you can save some real money on energy is to use a wind generator.

While you could definitely purchase a wind generator of your own, it's quite a bit cheaper if you actually build one yourself. Not sure this is a great idea? Well, here's a look at some of the main benefits you can enjoy when you build a wind generator of your own for home use.

There is the environmentally friendly aspect of wind generators. Less fossil fuels and polluting traditional fuels will be used as a result of more wind generator use. The fact that we rely so heavily on fossil fuels is dangerous, so changing over to renewable energy, which is practically unlimited, is very important.

If every person takes the responsibility and does their part to combat global warming, it makes a huge difference. Instead of using energy that puts even more greenhouse gasses into the air, when you use a wind generator, you'll be protecting the environment today.

Another excellent benefit that you can enjoy when you build a wind generator is that it is cost effective for your needs. There are some excellent designs out there today that don't cost a huge amount to build. For a reasonable amount of money you can build it, set it up, and start saving.

Wind energy is, after all, free. Once you have built the wind generator, you'll be able to enjoy absolutely free energy. You may even be able to cover most of your electricity usage with your own, free wind power.

It's not all that complicated to build a wind generator. There are plenty of books and internet resources which can show you how to do it step by step - the cost is relatively minimal, especially when you take into account how much money it's going to save you in energy costs.

The costs of building a homemade wind generator are low and the benefits are great; saving money while doing something good for the environment. It's easy to get started and is something you should seriously consider for your home's energy needs. - 16477

Do Your Homework, Buy The Right TV Wall Bracket

By Peter Thomas

Flat screen TVs are the future and when you purchase yours, you need to make sure you have the right TV sall bracket to suit your purposes.

It is not always the easiest job to decide on the future use of your TV, especially when it is going to be fixed to the wall. When you are buying a TV wall bracket, the chances are that you will be keeping it in the same place for quite a while.

In making the decisions there are a number of things to look at.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE WALL BRACKET

Firstly you need to establish what job you want your TV wall bracket to do. Are you going to set it up as a fixed set, have it swivel, tilt, or swivel and tilt, cantilered or motorised?

It really is a process of elimination though, and steps to work through.

To reach the conclusion as to which TV wall bracket would be best for your purposes you need to think of your room size, where you sit, how you sit, and so on.

In coming back to the furniture, are you going to keep your present furniture for a while, or are you looking to replace your seating? This could be quite relevant because if you are going to be purchasing new seating, the height difference could be quite substantial, and also the angle of your head could be quite different depending on the design of new furniture compared to the older seating that you have.

Is the screen going to have to be viewed from two different locations? If it is, that will probably mean you will want a swivel TV wall bracket.

Are you going to want children fiddling around with the angle of the TV?

PRICING A TV WALL BRACKET

I thought I would mention that you need to make sure of the model of TV you are going to buy if you have not purchased already. You probably have thought of these anyway, but because different brands have different bracket holes, it is important to know which screen you are going to have, before purchasing your wall brackets.

When you are purchasing your TV you will be offered wall mounts, but with respect, the prices are very much retail prices. It will pay you to have a look at online stores for comparison.

There are very reputable TV wall bracket suppliers around who can offer you a much more competitive price. Not only the price is competitive, but when you are dealing with a company like this, your selection will be much greater because that is their speciality. - 16477

Thinking About A Backyard Greenhouse? Weigh These Choices

By Mike Johnson

Want to grow tropical blossoms in a temperate climate? Or live in the frozen North and fancy some nice, heavy, luscious homegrown tomatoes to garnish your grizzly burger with? Then you need a greenhouse, a.k.a. a hothouse. Indoor Gardens are simple to fabricate and keep up, and come in a variety of materials and sizes to suite every last house and pocketbook.

They even have indoor greenhouses purchasable for those who don't have a back yard to put one in..

A Story of the Greenhouse

The beginnings of the greenhouse are uncertain. The emperor of Rome Tiberius seemingly applied a primitive variant of hothouse to produce the cucumbers that he liked so much. The modern-day greenhouse can trace its origins to 13th century Italy. From there, the idea extended across Europe, resulting in the extensive "botanical gardens" of the 19th century.

Greenhouses Now

In our own time, nurseries for family use have grown in popularity. They can be made with many variant materials including an outside shell comprising of glass, Plexiglas or even fiber glass with frames made of wood, steel or aluminum. They can be located anyplace that has positive access to sun. A lean-to greenhouse may be connected to the side of a shed and are a positive option for those with conservative budgets and/or space.

People living in flats can even purchase models that will fit right in the windowpane. Detached building are the most versatile type of structure, as you can spot them where ever you want without respect to fitting in with your home or outbuildings.. Finally, the largest and most expensive kind of nursery is the even-span, a full-size structure bonded to a building at one end.

Questions to Study

When planning your nursery, several factors need to be considered. How will you heat it? How will it be ventilated? Where will the light and carbon dioxide come from, both of which are fundamental for farming indoor garden plants? Once More, a few alternatives are usable, ranging from simple combinations of fans and heaters to sophisticated, thermostat driven air conditioning systems.

As a general rule of thumb, the more you are inclined to spend, the less time you will have to spend supervising and upholding your nursery. Likewise, you require to account for the capacity of the heating arrangement. This can be accomplished if you know the surface area and the amount of heat lost through the glazing material.

the better the insulating material that is used for the structure is the smaller the heaters will have to be to heat it.. In other words, purchasing a nursery has the potential for many false economies, and scrimping on your basic structure could prove to be really pricey in the long run. - 16477

How To Pick the Right Carpeting

By Qandishah Brown

Most people will consider carpeting for their homes or offices because of what it has to offer. It can make a room warm and cozy. It is also a great way to reduce noise compared to any other flooring. However it can be easy to land a carpet that wont last and is wrong if you dont know how to go about things properly. You will want to consider some other things beyond pricing and looks.

There are different typed of fibers that carpeting can be made of such as natural fibers. Natural fibers for carpeting will include wool which is the most common natural fiber. There are also some carpets which will include silk fibers. Natural carpets are relatively more expensive than synthetic ones; however there are some manufacturers which make blended fibers.

Synthetic carpeting can be made o f four different types of fibers namely nylon, polyester, acrylic and olefin. Among all these the most commonly used synthetic fiber is nylon. It is also stain resistant to some extent and more than that it is long lasting. Polyester can be more expensive than the other synthetic materials and it can have a more wool like feel to it as compared to the others.

Having a carpet installed or installing a carpet can be fairly easy. It can be put on any surface except for one that already has an old one on it. Its important to remember that you have enough ventilation when getting a carpet installed. The fumes from the adhesive may be quite irritating and strong so be sure there is enough air.

Making sure that your carpet lasts long enough will have to do with properly cleaning and maintaining it. Be sure that you vacuum it once a week to avoid dirt and dust build up. You may also wet clean it every few months to make sure that you get odor and stains out. It can also be smart to have your carpeting professionally cleaned every eighteen to twenty four months which can prolong its warranty as well. - 16477

Tools To Prepare Mouldings

By Adam Peters

Remolding has many stages, the first stage is the preparation of the following work, and uses to be the heaviest. Prepare surfaces to install mouldings- Moulding has to prepared first: cut, sand and finish suitably to apply over clean, dry and perfectly smooth surfaces Tools To Prepare Mouldings Basic tools are Cope saw Clamps Mitre box Complementary materials to finished Nails (1/2 inches) The use of mitre box is to hold pieces while cutting in the exact angel you need. Make joint cuts with a pre-molded trim (45 degrees angle) First you should take the acute measure of the room. Allow an extra spaces for losses derived from cutting. Always make the piece shorter. Join the pieces at 45 degree angels- If the moulding piece does not cover the entire extension of the room, join in the suitable joint

Don't commit any mistake, they are visible if made in the corners. To avoid errors, cut pieces slighter shorter, so they end before the corner Small pieces can be added to the corners to finished them. If you don't like that, try extra care when fitting the pieces and fill any space with a wood putty, after that sand it with care Have in mind that you will find irregularities in any house, even in the most fashionable. How to join pieces: Hammer finishing nail at the end,at different levels on the adjoining piece. Doing this last you will prevent any crack of the trim. You can glue pieces, too. Trim cracking can occur but you can diminish the risk covering the hammered surface with wood or plastic while you are nailing. The nail will compress internally the wood and that will avoid the crack on the surface. To work free hand or with clamps in the adjustments you need to make, use a code saw. When you see a precise, fitting pieces, you know that that is a professional moulding: if you respect those premises, your moulding will look professional like.

Trims Some trims may need to sanded, use several sandpaper of different grades and begin to sand the trims. Once you have sanded carefully with the grain of the wood, remove the sawdust. Do it carefully and use a slightly wet towel to clean it before staining

Any irregularities must been puttied, after that, sand the putty. Get your pieces finished before installing and you will save lot of time and money. Allow the pieces to dry completely. Depending in the style of the room and your own taste finish can be made by stain, varnish or painting. Discover what type of wood cope with what kind of finish. Painting a moulding requires several coats: apply the first, let dry. Do it once more and at last, apply the final coat.

Final Recommendation On Moulding Installing Check the weather: choose nice, clear day with warm temperature and low humidity. This will help to end up your work soon and make it more durable, especially in exposed areas - 16477

A Plague As Old As Agriculture: Rodents

By Darren K. Thompson

Contrary to popular mythology, and Mickey Mouse aside, rodents are a nuisance that can damage your home and endanger your family. These dangers can be as minor as damage to your wainscoting or as severe as life threatening illnesses, particularly if you live in a city that's a port town, where mice (and especially rats) can carry parasites from around the globe. Don't think of mice in the attic as being cute - think of them as a potential threat to your home value and your family.

Mice, rats and other hairy rodents can do quite a bit of physical damage to your home. Once they find their way into your home, they will chew their way into any area that looks appealing to them. One of the huge dangers of this is the possibility that they will chew threw electrical wiring causing a short.

Another problem is that rodents aren't sanitary, at all. They defecate everywhere they go, and since they like to live in your crawl spaces, this happens in places where you're not going to see it...until it gets overwhelming. Even worse, they use urine as a bonding material when they make nests; this keeps the nest warm, but makes parts of your baseboard smell like rat pee. It doesn't take much for rodents to make your home into theirs.

Beyond the dangers to your home, rodents are also bring with them many infectious parasites and diseases. Here are some examples.

Rickettsial Pox - This disease is similar to chicken pox and is carried by rodents, insects and pests like fleas and mites.

Salmonella - Food poisoning is a common problem when food comes in contact with saliva, urine or droppings of rats and mice.

Parasites - Many parasites can be transmitted to humans, particularly tapeworm and Trichinosis.

The Hantavirus - This potentially life threatening disease is spread via the inhalation of dust containing rodent droppings or urine.

Rat bite fever - This is rare disease, generally only transmitted through a bite.

The plague (pneumonic and bubonic) - This disease, carried by fleas and other mites that live on rodents, is thought by many to have been eradicated centuries ago; however cases are still reported today.

Now that the threat is a bit more real, let's look at countermeasures.

The first thing you must do is seal up cracks around pipes, windows, and doors. Even the smallest crack can allow entrance to your home for many rodents. An inexpensive tube of caulking will go a long way toward this end.

If they're already in the home, the best way to remove them is to have a cat; in addition to the rodents the cat kills, the smell of a cat and the knowledge that a predator is there will drive them out to greener pastures.

While not as effective as a good cat, glue traps and sticky boards are an effective way to control these pests, as are baited spring traps. The best baits are peanut butter, yogurt covered peanuts, and bits of bacon. Avoid using poisons; not only are they a risk to your children or pets, but you end up with rat carcasses rotting in inaccessible places. Leave poisoning rodents to professionals.

A small rodent infestation can be solved with any of these techniques; a larger infestation may need intervention from a professional exterminator. Definitely call an exterminator before using any kind of poison for rodents. - 16477

Feng Shui Tips - Ornamenting

By Ferdinand Mekinsy

Feng shui ornamenting has wide practical applications in wall-painting; the colors for each room are influenced by the personality of the people spending time in them, the purpose of the room and the rest of the interior decoration items. Select tranquil colors for the sleeping room so that you may suggest smoothness and comfort while creating the perfect retreat. Feng shui ornamenting for the study or the rooms with profound activities betokens the presence of vivid colours that stimulate imagination, creativity and accelerate the nervous impulses and the smooth working of the brain.

If you don't feel alright the moment you walk into your office, if none of the projects you deal with seem to have a happy finality, and if you think you've got an awful office, then it's unquestionably time for a change. Your office or cubicle could be streaming with bad energies accumulated and empowered by the wrong use of space. Currently, office feng shui advice savors nearly the same level of popularity as home feng shui. This art of arranging the space around us has been held in high esteem for thousands of years, and it definitely shows outcomes in its most contemporary of practical applications.

Feng shui design begins by identifying the power areas inside buildings because these are the spots with the best energetic support to be taken advantage of. The power areas vary from two relatives to another, being the sum of all the individual specificity of the people living in the house. Life facts are also only partly responsible for directing the flow of energy, sharing in the responsibility with the building architecture and the decoration of the living space. These entire elements equally need to beconsidered when planning a feng shui design pattern for your home or office.

The extent of the number and usage of feng shui items is unbelievably profound; therefore it's understandable why so numerous people are in search of true love, fiscal security, good health and the fulfillment of personal dreams. What you should know is that feng shui items accumulate part of the energies and beliefs directed towards them. Thus, the strength of will, the intensity of a feeling and positive thinking work together with the nice objects we surround us with, in order that what we want can be realized. A proportionate harmonious life style will grow into light and fulfillment even more when feng shui practices are prudently used.

Thus, one office feng shui taboo refers to the command position. People who are decision makers must not stay in the farthest corner from the entrance, and should avoid placing themselves in the same line with the door, as they'd be just in the path of the negative energy. The great advice here is to have a corner or a wall at the back for support. Then, in case the back is towards a window, it would be perfect if there were a profound building on the other side, as it would have the same backing mountain-like position. Office feng shui also recommends that you don't turn your back to the door when doing business, as you may turn your back to good fortune. - 16477

Different Types Of Cactus Plants

By Thomas Fryd

Mealybugs and scale insects can be two of the most aggressive bugs to attack cacti and succulents. New seedling plants are also subject to damage, but the main pest of these plants is when they are over watered by their owners. There are many varieties, more than a thousand to choose from, and we are going to list a few of the more popular ones. For many reasons, these types have proven to be great houseplants.

A Christmas Cactus, which also goes by the name zygocactus truncatus, is admired for its mid-winter flowers. It grows in a cluster of leaf-life joints extending from a single base. The flowers run up to 3 inches long, are deep red in color and will bloom from October to January. This particular cactus is aided by being placed outside during the summer months. It should be only be watered sparsely once it is brought back inside. This is only necessary until it shows signs of blooming again, then watering should be increased. It should be planted in loose soil, and it does not need sand, unlike other varieties of cacti. It tends to be droopy and would be best planted in a hanging basket.

The Peanut Cactus is another popular cactus of the succulent family. It is very different from its cousin the Christmas Cactus. It is a lower growing plant it seldom grows over 3 inches tall. It is made up of clusters of joints that are covered by soft white spines. It has large, funnel shaped flowers and it propagated by cutting the joints.

Another variety is the Night-Blooming Cereus, as the name implies, it flowers will only open at night. There are many different varieties of the Night-Blooming Cactus. Some of which can grow to be very high in stature. In the houseplant variety, it can grow to a height of 3 or 4 feet and it blooms large white colored flowers.

The Orchid Cactus, is also in the same family as the Christmas Cactus. But this cactus blooms in the spring and summer, as opposed to the winter time. There are dozens of types of this cactus, all have exquisite blooms and can reach tremendous height and size. Aloes are in the succulent family, they grow heavy lily-shaped leaves that sprout from a single base. They can be either fully green or green with white and silver stripes and spots.

Aloes can often be mistaken for the Agave, the Century Plant. They strongly resemble each other. The Crown-Of-Thorns is known by the botanical name Euphorbia. It can be grown upright or trained to vine, it has a thick stem and succulent spiny leaves. This plant needs more moisture and humidity than many other succulents or the yucca cane. The Jade Plant, or Crassula, is another typical succulent plant, it has flat, round leaves that are bright green or can be variegated in color as well. This plant is easy for a even a novice to grow, and will withstand almost anything except over watering. - 16477

Hydraulic Log Splitters - A Great Investment

By Nash Wendin

Everyone who has a fireplace or a wood stove has heard the age-old saying, "Firewood warms you twice; once when you cut it and once when you burn it." This was true for decades, as men and women used sledgehammers, mallets and wedges when splitting firewood. But in the last few years hydraulic, gasoline and electric log splitters have replaced much of the manual labor. The result: people spend more time relaxing by the fire than before.

What is important when shopping for a quality log splitter? The first question to ask would be: Will this be used for personal firewood only or will it be used to split wood that will be sold to others? If the wood is going to be used in a home stove or fireplace, then smaller equipment is sufficient (beginning in the 2 to 5 ton range). But for commercial log splitting, it will be necessary to purchase equipment that exerts up to 20 tons of pressure. Purchasing a splitter that is much too small is an invitation to trouble, as the engine will overheat or be damaged because it is overtaxed.

Some individuals have found that the quality log splitter is excellent for uses beyond the simple task of providing wood for the stove or fireplace. Some have incorporated their splitter into a furniture-making process, creating excellent chairs, tables and other items from rough wood that is initially split with the hydraulic or electric splitter. Commercial-grade splitters are used by forest-product suppliers to create rough-cut planking, prepare large trees for transport to the mill and so on. In every case, the modern log splitter has become an important tool for both private and commercial use. All of this translates into time saved and money saved.

Log splitters of sufficient strength and quality to last for years may cost hundreds of dollars. While it is possible to purchase an electric splitter for personal use, the larger hydraulic splitter can generally be more powerful and are good for commercial and heavy-duty use. These high-end items may cost thousands, rather than hundreds, of dollars.

If the log splitter is to be used only for home firewood, when the stove or fireplace is more a luxury item than a necessity, the smaller splitter should be sufficient. If the splitter will be used in a firewood business, even on a part time scale, it may be wise to figure out how much wood can be split per hour or per day, to get some idea about cost. Hydraulic log splitters can also be a tool for creating log furniture. In this case, it is also very important to get a splitter that is powerful enough and durable enough. It would be wise to take a bit of extra time to learn more about splitters, their capabilities and their costs, before choosing one that is too small.

With any power equipment, there is the issue of safety. While many new models of log splitter are self-lubricating and require very little maintenance, the more the individual learns about the equipment the safer it will be when in use. Tip: Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. - 16477

Concrete Polishing: The Floor to Beat

By William Borris

Try a search engine. Look for ideal floor designs and you'll be overwhelmed with the amount of hits that you get. There are just too many options, and each option requires you to choose another option again. For example, if you choose to get natural, stone flooring, then you'll have to consider the durability of the material, as well as its cost. Tiles likewise have the same issues. Carpets, on the other hand, have varying degrees of softness and longevity.

The choices are overwhelming to the majority of people, so many will just decide to postpone the renovation of the floor in their home or office. If you are one of these people, I urge you to first consider getting polished, concrete floors. Check it out, and I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. Concrete polishing is on the rise.

Concrete polishing came to light during the early nineties, and in that short time it has become the bar by which all the other floor designs are measured. There have been a lot of concrete polishing innovations within the last two decades, both in its longevity and its beauty. There will undoubtedly be more in the near future.

Today, concrete polishing is the best choice for your home or workplace. The benefits include:

*Elegance - Polished concrete has a sleek, impressive look

*Polishing strengthens the concrete - The process of concrete polishing makes your floor more durable, and you will not need to replace them for a long time.

*Cost-Efficient - It is one of the cheapest when compared to other commercial flooring materials.

*Low-upkeep - You need only sweep once in a while, and it will keep its luster.

Clearly, polished concrete beats out the competition. Why bother with the nuances of other materials? Polished Concrete is simply the best choice out in the market today. - 16477

A Guide to Flooring

By Qandishah Brown

When it comes to our homes it can be easy to ignore the flooring that we choose; but this is something that we really need to pay attention to since flooring is something that you will be living with for quite some time. Not to mention that this is something you will be maintaining as well. There are a number of options that you have for flooring and you can also opt to use a mix depending on the area.

Kitchens can be a place where dropping breakable things happens a lot. This is why vinyl can be one of your best options for flooring. With its material and resilience things may bounce off. Maintenance can be easy since all it needs is some sweeping and mopping. Waxing it occasionally will help keep its shine. Wiping spills immediately will help prevent staining.

Bathrooms will definitely need something that is waterproof. Tiles work best for this area. Maintenance for this type of flooring is easy as well. Just a bit of mopping and youre good. A scrub once in a while with some detergent will make sure that all the spaces in between stay spot clean. Areas that are prone to be wet dont work well with tiles since they can be slippery.

Hardwood is a popular option for many different areas such as the dining room and living room. Some homes even use this throughout the entire house. It can be durable, but is high maintenance. Hardwood can be prone to scratching and will easily lose its sheen if it is not properly maintained. Regular waxing and buffing are musts to keep hardwood looking great.

If you are looking for something that is warm and cozy that will give a lot of color choices, carpeting is the way to go. Carpeting can go a long way if you know how to maintain and take care of it. Compared to other flooring carpeting may require a bit more care and maintenance. Regular vacuuming and cleaning will allow you to keep the dirt out and prolong your carpets life as well. - 16477

Wall Mural Ideas for "Mural Design Block"

By Sam Smith

So you've seen your' friends house with the mural designs on their walls, and you're pretty jealous. You want to get a beautiful mural on your house as well, and you just aren't sure how? Well, here's the good news. Below are a number of ideas.

The initial step to take is outlining your project. You need to start with a budget. Once you've decided on the budget, you can now choose the style's you want, and what rooms to paint those on.

Your style reflects your personal taste, and is the most exciting part of the project! Now that you have your' budget, and you have your choice of a couple of rooms, you get to decide where you want to place your murals, and what you want them to express. Here are some ideas to start you off:

1) Ethical Themes: Ethics Themes are great to paint on your wall. When you take the time to design a custom mural based on a theme that you believe in strongly, it strongly impacts yourself, and the people around you. The best way to imprint an ethical theme is to take a fabled story that expresses that theme, and put it in a related room. For example, taking a food related bible story about sharing, and place it in your kitchen.

2) Cultural Message - Every culture, either the one you've grown up with, or the one that attracts you has messages that are very special to them. Cultural messages are especially powerful when they are placed prominently in your house, and will give you and your family a much bigger attachment to the culture.

3) Country Themes - If you love different imagery worldwide, the best way to remember it as you go about your daily life is having your murals painted to resemble the places you love the most.

4) Hobbies - If you have a specific hobby that you love, there is no better way to enjoy it than placing parts of your hobby on the wall as a background to however you decorate the rest of your house.

5) Scenery - It is well known that all of our senses interact with each other. If you enjoy the beauty of a sunset, the serenity of the ocean's waves, or the lush scenery of a rainforest, there's no better way to remember that experience every day than putting on the wall. You can take pictures from past trips, or simply have the muralist find the images that appeal to you the most. - 16477

What You Should Know About Carpet Care

By Qandishah Brown

Who doesnt like having warm soft carpets on their floors? These things are more than just an accent but it deteriorate quickly without proper care. Caring for your carpet properly can mean more than just an occasional vacuum. There are certain things to keep in mind so that you can clean your carpet properly. Correct cleaning can ensure that your carpet can last longer and stay looking nice as well.

A good thing to remember is that even if you dont see it, its there. This means that dust and dirt get trapped within your carpet without being visible. This is why it is important for you to vacuum your carpet at least once a week. You can do it more often if the area you live in has a lot of traffic and dust. Cleaning baseboards and hard to reach areas is also important; take the time to do this so that you prevent buildup.

Vacuuming your carpet will be useless if you dont do it properly. The best way to get all the dirt and dust out is by going over your carpet several times. Wall to wall carpeting may be a bit more challenging to clean. To make things easier and ensure that you dont miss any spots divide the entire area into sections. This way you can work portion by portion without skipping anything.

A wet cleaning method is a good way to clean your carpet too. Before you get started on this be sure that what you use is made especially for carpet cleaning. Laundry detergents, dish washing liquids and the like are not recommended for use. Pay special attention if your carpets are not made from synthetic fibers since these can be more sensitive. Dont forget to vacuum your carpet to remove dry soil before wet cleaning.

There are some common mistakes that carpet owners make when wet cleaning their carpets and this often leads to a bigger problem. Remember that you dont want to wet your carpet too much since it can lead to shrinkage, odor and discoloration. Thoroughly dry your carpet and make sure you have a lot of ventilation when wet cleaning it. - 16477

There's Nothing Mundane About Concrete Floors

By Rick Amorey

I've recently been put in charge of renovating the unsightly flooring on our ancestral home, which we've recently re-occupied. The upper floors were easy enough; any aspiring do-it-yourself guy can repair a wooden floor and cover up the mess with a carpet. But the ground floor is made of concrete, and is further covered up with tiles that allow a wooden finish. It would have been nice if tiles weren't missing here and there, not to mention having some tiles being destroyed. Better to just remove the tiling and focus on making the concrete more presentable.

After the deed, I realized that concrete really looks unremarkable. I then decided to go to the ever-reliable internet to search for a site that could help me out. After poking around for a bit, I chanced upon a site on Polished Concrete floors. Intrigued, I took a look. And I must say: Wow.

After checking the site for a while, I found that concrete could be polished to look much better than the wooden finish that our house originally had. It has a semi-reflective, waxed look, which is ideal for a lot of industrial applications. And for those like me that are simply there to have their homes renovated, I saw a coffee-tinted finish that I absolutely loved. That it blends well with the wooden finish sported by the rest of my home only sealed the deal.

Another benefit of polished concrete is that it requires relatively little upkeep. Only the occasional cleaning is sufficient, and it requires no waxing at all. That's a huge plus for me, because cleaning house is definitely not something I'd want to do everyday.

Finally, if you're not the do-it-yourself type, the site also links to a message board. A little socializing can help you find a contractor in your area. If not, you'll surely find a user who can give helpful advice from the friendly concrete polishing community. - 16477

Wind Power As An Alternative Energy Source

By David Sullivan

As heating costs rise and fossil fuels dwindle the search is on to discover better ways for supplying our power needs. More individuals are choosing alternative energy sources that are free, readily available and produce zero emissions.

Whether you want to get off the grid entirely, or simply reduce your energy costs, the decision to build wind turbine generators is a way to stay green and save money.

When deciding to build alternative energy plants yourself, you need to consider several things about where you intend to place them. These include zoning laws, the neighborhood, how much land you have and how obstructed it is, and how much power you want to generate.

If you have a lot of energy blowing through your backyard, the amount of power a wind power generator can create may surprise you. If you make an efficient generator from good plans, you can save a large chunk of your energy bill each month.

The surplus energy generated by your turbine can be sold back to local power companies, making you a profit. In order to do this, all you need is to be connected to the grid. You'll be able to watch your energy meter spin backwards as you feed power back to the utility company.

Most individuals will have to settle for a slightly scaled back version of this plan. Home owners often have limited room to use for this project. Depending upon the average wind speed in your area though, you can still manage to rack up some substantial savings.

Many have built homemade wind turbines already and can save up to 50% of their energy bill with just one turbine. These types of turbines can also be made in only a few weeks, depending on how much effort you are willing to put in and how much spare time you have.

A wind turbine requires very little maintenance, and you can mount one on a single pole located in your yard. It can help you decrease your power costs by a decent amount every month. - 16477

Things To Consider Before Planting A Lawn

By Keith Markensen

It can be hard to grow a thick, dark green lawn, but there are a few tips to follow. When seeding a lawn, fall is undoubtedly the best time. September is the perfect time to begin your lawn, because the hottest weather will be over. You could also start in early spring, but there needs to be good root growth before the hot summer weather arrives. However, they will be competing with crab grass, which grows quickly in the summer months, as well as high heat and inadequate water.

When planting your grass seeds, keep in mind that the seeds are relatively small, so they should not be planted deeply into the ground. As long as the ground is relatively moist, the seeds only need partial covering with soil. You should use about 4 pounds of seeds for 1,000 square feet of lawn. Don't try to make up for low-quality seeds by using more of them; this will just increase competition between them.

When planting your seeds, use a mechanical spreader if you can. To ensure even coverage, you should spread half the seeds in one direction, the rest in the other direction. That way, you will not miss any spots. When you're done, rake the seeds lightly. You may also want to cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil or compost, but this is not absolutely necessary.

If you're trying to plant a lawn on a slope, this will need special treatment. If it rains, the seeds are likely to be washed away. You can cover them with straw to keep them in place, but remove the straw as soon as they sprout. Or you can cover the new seedlings with an open mesh burlap, cheesecloth, or garden mesh. These will keep the soil intact and protect the new grass. It should be removed by the time the grass is half an inch long.

Rainfall is best for new grass, but if you have decided on sowing grass seeds during dry weather, you'll need to water for the seeds to germinate. Be sure to use a fine mist so that you won't create puddles. Water in the morning, before the hottest part of the day. Especially once the grass seeds sprout, be sure to adequately water them. You can use a sprinkler, but don't leave it on the lawn until the soil becomes too wet. After you water, the water should reach down about 5 inches into the soil.

As your grass begins to grow, you may wonder when it's time to begin the chore of mowing. You can start moving when the tallest blades of grass are 2 inches long, but don't cut the grass shorter than an inch and a half.

If you're considering tearing out an old lawn to replace it with a new and healthy lawn, this may be a wise decision. However, there are also some things you should do before planting the lawn. If your lawn is growing poorly because the soil is too hard, plow it and add compost. You can also try aerating the top layer of soil, or adding 4 pounds of plant food for every 100 square feet of lawn. If your lawn is mossy, you should improve the drainage before planting your new lawn. - 16477

Hard Wood Flooring Needs A Shine

By Noel Wortinger

When you are dealing with your own floor you need to be sure that you know exactly what it needs. For example if you have a carpet and you have no vacuum cleaner you are really asking for trouble because going around and picking up individual pieces of dirt, hair, food, and other things which can end up on the floor is a chore that nobody is looking forward to.

The same could be said for Wood flooring; if you have a hard Wood flooring and you are not able to clean or sweep or polish this floor often enough, then you are just asking for trouble when it comes to making it sparkle.

Wood Flooring Just Needs Love

If you consider it though you should be very comfortable with the fact that Wood flooring just needs love like anything else. If you have a wood floor that is in need of some attention and then really the first thing you should do is get yourself a broom and get yourself a nice cloth depending upon how nice the flooring should be.

If you have older Wood flooring and you are just trying to keep it clean then that's one thing; if you have brand new oak flooring which should be able to be eaten off of then that's a completely different story and it's something that you should be well aware of.

Wood flooring does need particular attention when it comes to cleaning because unlike a vacuum cleaning job on a carpeted floor, dust and dirt and other particles can accumulate on the wood floor seemingly without notice. Great stretches of time can go by where you don't pay any attention to your wood floor until you have noticed that there are huge cobwebs and dust balls of mold and other gross things that need to be taken care of straightaway.

Wooden Floor Is Good Enough For Most

However the benefits of having a wooden floor are exponential in number. People often put there wooden floor in their nicest room in their home because they feel it deserves a much more attention than they give the rest of their home. Often times these rooms will be unused for days or weeks on end and then they will pull out the nice china and pull out the big platter and have a whole bunch of friends and family come over to enjoy a fine meal and admire their find flooring. While this may seem like an exaggeration to some, the truth is actually a lot more closely held then many people may believe and this is something that everybody should remember what they are talking about a really nice wooden floor. - 16477
