The Necessity Of Bathroom Tiles

By Adrian Green

You can remodel or restructure your house only if you own it. If you already possess an own house and want to make some changes to increase its resale value then don't forget to redo your bathroom. Refurbishing and renovating generally depends upon the owner's tastes and budget available. But a slight renovation of the bathroom will give the much needed enhancement to the entire house. Give the bathroom an entire makeover right from replacing the tiles, sink and wash tub. Get an interior decorator to see the house and depending on your budget you can redo the house or only the bathroom to get your desired resale value.

When you think of remodeling your bathroom the first thing that comes into your mind is to replace the bathtub, the sink, tiles and also the curtains if required. Some people think of redoing the whole bathroom and some only part depending upon the cost. But everyone will agree to the fact that whatever the cost, the bathroom tiles have to be replaced to give that special affect to your bathroom.

One of the great reasons for considering bathroom tiles is hygiene. Bathroom tiles, such as the traditional porcelain, are easy to clean and using anti-bacteria washing detergents. This is why they are considered a standard in many households, schools and other places.

Another important aesthetic reason given for changing bathroom tiles is that it beautifies the bathroom. An ugly bathroom shuns visitors. And a clean and well kept bathroom invites compliments to the owner. An attractive and clean well maintained bathroom is always appreciated. It also gives a good impression of the owner of the house.

Bathroom tiles can be obtained anywhere. There is a wide range of selection to choose from. You can go for the traditional porcelain, beautiful marble, sleek granite or terracotta. Opt one that suits your taste and looks good on your bathroom.

There are others as home improvement experts get more innovative. Marble, ceramic and porcelain seem to be more dominant. Porcelain is the standard white shiny tile material that make up more sinks and bathtubs in most homes and hotels that we visit.

A good bathroom is an asset to a house. With real estate prices' falling down at a drop of the hat it makes sense in redoing the home especially the bathroom to get a good resale value. You may burn your pockets if your house does not get a good resale value. So keep in mind to add good bathroom tiles to your bathroom to add overall value to your house in the long run.

You can see from the above paragraphs that bathroom tiles are very essential. They not only maintain hygiene they also make the bathroom look neat and clean. Your house will get a boost in terms of looks and you will receive loads of complements from guests and relatives if you have a well kept bathroom. So you can see that it not only adds beauty to your house it can also increase your resale value. - 16477

Wooden Parasols 101

By Gillian Duff

Whenever you are relaxing in the garden, you want to enjoy the sun but at times you might want shade too. This article, from the experts at Garden Furniture Scotland, explains all about wooden parasols. In this series, there are also articles about Parasol Bases, Aluminium Parasols and Cantilever Parasols.

The first obvious question is what you want the parasol for? If it is to complement a set of garden furniture, you need to ask whether there a hole in the middle of the table. It is useful to measure the hole in the table to ensure the diameter of pole of the parasol will fit. It should be noted that the hole in tables for parasols are generally 51mm, although there are variations to this.

There is an industry standard for parasol stems and most are either 38mm or 48mm though you can find other sizes too. The through-the-table parasol is by far the most popular.

Wooden stemmed parasols are the most popular, possible because they are inexpensive and are available in many colours, shapes and sizes. The middle of the parasol is screw-threaded to connect the top part with the canopy to the bottom part which goes through the table. Because it comes in two parts, the distribution costs of domestic parasols such as this are limited making it cheaper for you to buy. Rarely does the screw-threaded middle section cause any problem.

At the cheaper end of the market, hardwoods from the Far East such as Nyatoh, Keruing and Eucalyptus are used. At the more expensive end of the market, parasol stems will be made from teak, which makes them far more durable.

Cheaper wooden parasols have a pulley system on one side of the parasol stem for opening and closing the canopy. More expensive parasols will have a 4 way pully mechanism, one pully on each side of the stem, lessening the strain on the mechanism and balancing the load.

Some wood stem parasols have a crank handle mechanism. Though many people prefer a wooden stem but like the ease of the crank handle, they might be tempted to by this combination. However, this is not a good idea. To put a crank mechanism in, means the central core of the wood is removed to insert the crank wire. This reduces the strength of the stem.

Avoiding this by placing the crank wire in a groove on the side of the stem is a possibility but it is rather unsightly. Another popular innovation is the tilt mechanism which means that the top of the parasol (the canopy) can be tilted to the side to shade your table from evening sunlight. This can also result in a weakening of the parasol.

The size of the parasol determines, to some extent, the price. Smaller parasols will likely have six ribs while larger, more expensive parasols might have eight or ten ribs. The ribs support the canopy which can be stitched into place. Sometimes leather pouched hold the ribs, at other times, zipped pockets which aollow the canopy to be removed and washed.

Parasol canopies come in a variety of colours and can be made from many different materials. Polyester is the most common and is often covered with a water repellant treatment so it is showerproof.

Parasol canopies are also treated to reduce fading in sunlight (ultraviolet light). Look for UV resistent fabric when you are purchasing a parasol and think about the colour you would prefer. Remember that some colours fade more readily - red or black, for instance, as compared to cream or natural.

Heavy duty polyester, which is measured by grams per inch squared is by far the best material to use for parasols. Cotton is not suitable as a parasol canopy - though you will find some on the market - as it is not strong enough. There are branded products, such as 'Sunbrella' which is well known as a parasol canopy material and is well known for its quality.

Most parasols have what is called a wind vent, which allow wind to blow through the top of the parasol and reduce stress to the frame. Lower quality parasols without this are more likely to break in the wind. Ensure the parasol you choose has a wind vent.

Before you buy a parasol consider the size and style you want, look at the pully or crank system, the material used for the canopy and whether it is showerproof and UV Stable. If you are interested in more information about parasols, please also look at our articles about Cantilever Parasols, Parasol Bases and Aluminium Parasols. Simply log on to Garden Furniture Scotland to learn more about this subject. - 16477

Have You Considered Deck Retractable Awnings?

By Adam Peters

If you have a deck in your garden then you will notice just how much everyone loves to spend time on it during the summer months. Barbecues are often enjoyed on the deck and it provides you with the perfect place to entertain friends and family. No matter what you use your deck for, sometimes in the summer months in particular it can get a little uncomfortable whilst you are out on it. Also the deck can start to fade because of the suns rays. This is when a deck retractable awning would come in extremely handy!

What Are Deck Awnings?

Deck awnings are ideal for blocking out the suns rays and for protecting your deck from overheating. They allow you to enjoy the summer weather without getting burnt and it makes it easier to entertain friends and family as you will all be a lot more comfortable. No matter what type of deck you have you will always be able to find an awning which is suitable for it.

You can choose from either manual or automatic awnings. Basically manual awnings are used by pulling a lever or a hand wheel which will then pull the awning out. Automatic ones on the other hand are controlled through electronic devices. However with the automatic awnings they also come with a manual override option just in case the automatic controls fail to work properly. This comes in particularly handy when the power goes off and you cannot control the automatic awning!

You will find that generally the two most popular types of deck awnings are canvas and aluminum. Now aluminum ones are used quite frequently and this is because they tend to be better at reflecting the light away from you and your property. However they can also cause a lot of noise when it rains and so some people prefer to have canvas awnings instead. Now canvas awnings also come in a wider choice of styles and colors. The only downside to canvas awnings in comparison with aluminum ones is that they do not last as long. So if you are looking for something which will last you for years to come then aluminum awnings may just be what you need. Or if you would prefer an awning which is a lot more visually appealing, canvas awnings should be what you opt for.

Overall awnings are excellent to have in any garden and they do come in a large variety of styles and colors. So if you do have a deck and you find that it gets too hot in the summer months, why not consider purchasing an awning? It will help to keep you cool and stop your furniture from becoming ruined also.

Lawn Care And The Right Tools For The Job

By Marshall Clewis

It has not been that long ago, that the first blades of grass were cut down about only 150 years ago. During those days people used as grass cutting scythe and did it all by hand, and many were lucky it even worked moderately. Nowadays, there are over a dozen different tools that have been designed that people use to keep their lawns in pristine shape.

The lawn mower is just the most basic of all lawn care tools and it is hard to imagine a living organism that actually needs to be cut and sliced off to be kept healthy. As a professional lawn care worker once said, Grass just likes to be cut, and to accomplish this a good, quality lawnmower is essential.

Though a lawn mower is an expensive investment, if it is taken care of it can last a lifetime. You will need to keep the blade sharpened, the spark plugs clean and the air filter changed if the mower has one, and change the oil as needed.

Keeping your lawn neat and clean is not just a matter of clipping it , you will need to do more than just this alone. You will need a trimmer or edger and there are two types available; an old fashioned two blade model and one that uses a string that gets shot out of the trimmer. Taking the trimmer along the edge of patio bricks, ledges and edges will help maintain the good appearance of your lawn. The string type of trimmer is less expensive and although the string will need to be periodically replaced, it is better at saving time and effort in the long run.

To place fertilizer evenly throughout the lawn and other chemicals and compounds that will keep your lawn free of weeds and looking its best lawn care advice highly recommends the use of a spreader. One of the spreaders available to use almost looks like a smaller lawn mower and has a tub with small holes and a roller to dispense the compounds. A positive fact about this type of spreader is that they are easy to use and they are adjustable for use on different projects. The second type of spreader is a hand-held model, which is usually plastic and has a handle. This type of spreader is perfect for patching small areas of lawn and distributing dry fertilizer.

A rake is also used for much more than just raking up piles of leaves in the fall time, leaves left on the ground can pile up and it can cause the grass to overheat or get to little water. In areas of the country that experience snow, the grass at the end of the season gets compacted and turns into thatch. Blades overlay each other and this results in air not being able to properly reach the soil and while dethatching can be done with a power tool, a rake is also effective. A shovel spade is needing for digging post holes and moving dirt and planting plants, and many other projects you could be doing around the yard. - 16477

How to select the best LCD TV stand

By Larry

Since its introduction a few years back, Plasma and LCD televisions are slowly but surely taking over households all over the world. With is price becoming cheaper by the day, more and more people are upgrading to these sleek and slim displays. A cool piece of electronics like a LCD TV can greatly enhance the look of your room. The last thing that you will want to do is to spoil the good looks of your LCD TV by placing it on your old and bulky TV stand from the eighties.

In terms of aesthetics and functionality, it is always a good idea to get a stand that is especially designed for LCD TVs. For starters, although most LCD TVs are lighter than old cathode ray televisions, the weight distribution of slim TVs are very different from older TVs.

In cathode ray TVs, its weight is distributed over a large surface area. When it comes to LCD and plasma TVs, its weight is concentrated on a relatively small surface area. Because of this, the supporting surface of a LCD TV stand needs to be stronger and reinforced to support the concentrated weight. This is especially important when it comes to large and heavy LCD televisions.

Price is of course, always a major consideration when it comes to any purchases. It is good idea to invest in a high quality TV stand as a well made stand can last for decades. If you can afford to buy a good TV stand, make sure that you buy a stand that is larger than what you currently need so that it can be used to support larger TVs if you decide to get a bigger one in the future.

In terms of aesthetics, long and slim TV stands are more stylish that short and wide ones. Long rectangular stands look sleeeker and elongate the look of a room, creating an illusion of a bigger space. You should also get your hands on stands that have enclosed storages. Such stands are neater as all your other electronic appliances (like DVD players) and DVD collection can be hidden away from view. - 16477

And on the Seventh Day: A Moving Week Checklist

By Edmonton Storage Guy

The last week before you move will be spent taking care of final details such as cleaning and last-minute packing. If you haven't already done so, contact your utility companies and other essential service providers to give them your new contact information.

Many of the things left to be packed are things that you use on a daily basis. They can't be packed yet, but you should keep them limited to as few locations as possible, to avoid overlooking anything when it's time to go.

Hopefully by now you've got at least one or two empty rooms. These should be thoroughly cleaned and then sealed off. Don't leave them open or you may have to clean them again.

Your appliances should be checked out and cleaned with seven days to go. Take care of any necessary repairs, to avoid having to deal with while setting up your new home. You'll want to avoid buying frozen foods during this last week, to prevent waste and allow you to use up what's already in your freezer.

One of the best things you can do for yourself during your last seven days is to keep a notepad with you at all time. Write down any items you're going to need to purchase, and any errands you need to run. It's easy to overlook even the most obvious tasks during the frantic few days before your move.

Take some time to fill out moving announcement cards-you can either purchase them at a stationery store or print them up on your computer-with your new address and phone number (if it's changing) to send to your friends and relatives. They'll appreciate the gesture, and the ability to stay in touch.

The last week of your move is a busy time, so think ahead to keep yourself organized and you'll be less likely to leave out anything important.

Finding the Right Moving Van

By Edmonton Storage Guy

Unless you've taken a vow of poverty and everything you own will fit into one suitcase, you're going to need some help when the time comes to move your household from one location to another.

You have a choice between hiring a full-service moving crew, or renting just a truck and loading and then driving it yourself. Cost is an important factor, of course, but it's worth bearing in mind that your time is also valuable, so weigh the costs carefully before making your decision.

Regardless of which option you choose, you'll need to go through your home and make a list of everything that you'll be moving. Be sure to include all furnishings and appliances, and the number and types of rooms, to get an idea of how many boxes there are going to be so that you can start collecting estimates.

Remember that any prices you're quoted based on the inventory is just an estimate; someone from the company will have to come out and do a walkthrough to see exactly what they're dealing with before they can tell you how much it will cost.

Use local and online resources to check out the reputations of the companies you're considering. Ask friends for referrals, and ask the companies themselves for references. Be sure to actually call the people on the reference lists.

Book your reservation as soon as possible to be sure that the truck and/or crew you want is going to be available at the time you need. Many people move during summer break, when the kids are out of school, so competition is going to be greatest at that time.

Always build some cushion into your budget. Refundable deposits are still an out-of-pocket expense, if only temporarily, and fuel costs can fluctuate wildly, depending on the time of year. - 16477

Central US States Hardy Vines for Landscape

By Keith Markensen

Vines For gardeners who live in THE CENTRAL STATES

WINTERCREEPER - There are two varieties of this broad leaved vine or ground cover worthy of attention. The first is the purple-leaf wintercreeper, Euonymus Fortunei colorata, whose foliage has a purple cast; the second, the big-leaf wintercreeper, Euonymus Fortunei vegetus, noted for its attractive bright green rounded foliage and bitter sweet like fruit in fall. Both are tolerant of most any soil, prefer a north or east exposure and cling to walls or trees by root-like holdfasts reaching up 25 feet or more. As ground covers they grow a foot or so tall. The nice thing about them is that they will grow in shade and can stand root competition from trees. Regrettably they cannot be recommended for the coldest or the warmest parts of the region.

BALTIC IVY - The hardiest variety of English ivy, Hedem Helix baltica, will climb up walls or tree trunks 25 feet or more and also makes an interesting 3 to 5-inch-deep ground cover. It will grow in practically any soil and prefers a north or east exposure. The foliage is medium sized and prominently veined.

BULGARIAN IVY - This ground cover or vine, known as Hederia Helix Bulgaria is as hardy as Baltic ivy and requires the same soil and exposure. Its distinguishing feature is its large leaves that give the plant a rather coarse textural effect. Some training may be required at first to make it climb.

JAPANESE HONEY SUCKLE - This vigorous twining vine needs pruning and clipping to keep it in bounds. It will quickly drape a trellis or fence or form a dense ground cover, being especially good for erosion control on steep banks. Known as Lonicera japonica Halliana, it is evergreen in the southern part of the region while in the north it is considered semi-evergreen, its foliage turning bronze and finally dropping in late winter. It likes sun or part shade and does well on even the poorest. soil. The flowers are very fragrant.

LALAND FIRETHORN - Commonly seen as a shrub, Pyracantha coccinea Lalandi is most decorative when trained on a wall or trellis where its branches up to 8 feet long are splayed out to show off white flowers in June and bright red fruit in fall. It does best in the warmer parts of the region where it is evergreen but is also good in protected locations in the north where it is considered semi-evergreen. For best results give it a well-drained soil in full sun.

CANBY PACHISTIMA - This neat plant growing to one foot high has dark green finely textured foliage. As a ground cover or as a low hedge plant, it is excellent among trees or shrubs. You will find it listed as Pachistima Canbyi. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil and year-round shade. It is not recommended for the drier and colder parts of the region.

JAPANESE PACHYSANDRA - Forming an evergreen carpet 10 inches high, this fine flowering vine plant thrives in all but the driest and coldest sections of the region if given year-round shade. It spreads by underground stolons and prefers a moist well-drained soil. Many people know it by its scientific name, Pachysandra terminalis. Among other flowering vines it is one of the best ground covers available.

COMMON PERIWINKLE - For locations where lawns are impossible to maintain Vinca minor comes to the rescue. It is a rugged plant but cannot, however, be walked upon. It likes a light, well-drained soil in full or part shade and under favorable conditions will grow 10 inches tall. There are several horticultural varieties, one of which has bright blue flowers; one with pure white flowers, and a third with purple flowers. - 16477

Northern Gardeners Checklist For February

By Marshall Clewis

Tender bulbs and tubers that are in storage for the winter should be given an inspection in February. Cannas, dahlias and tuberous begonias that have been packed in a storage material (sand, peat moss, vermiculite, etc.) should be examined for evidences of insects and diseases and to ascertain whether or not the packing medium has become too dry.

Any of these conditions should be corrected before trouble develops. Storage temperature, too, should be checked. Gladiolus, dahlias and cannas should be stored at temperatures that do not go above 40 degrees nor below 33 degrees.

Tuberous begonias, Peruvian daffodils and other warm climate plants should be stored at temperatures that do not go above 60 degrees or below 40 degrees. The corns of gladiolus should be examined for evidence of insects and diseases and if they have not been cleaned of the soil from the garden, now is the time to do so.

The stub of the old stalk which was left attached at digging time should be removed. It should be dry enough by now so that it can be detached without injury to the upper surface of the corm. The withered remains of the old mother corm also should be separated from the new corm.

Usually it can be snapped off without leaving any part attached to the new caladium bulb. If some of the old corm should persist, it should be cut out carefully with a sharp pocket knife and done so that the base of the new bulb is not injured. After cleaning glad corms, dust them with an insecticide to keep caladium bulbs thrips under control.

If there are any evidences of diseases, dust them with one of the new combination insecticide-fungicides now on the market and commonly known as "glad dusts". Soft corms and badly blemished ones should be discarded, keep only clean, solid corms. - 16477

Arizona Trash Removal

By Karry Townsend

To the people of Arizona, waste removal is important. It helps keep the local water resources clean and makes the communities look respectable. One of the leading places in the state has been Scottsdale.

Scottsdale has implemented the Refuse and Recycling program. It is a waste removal program that involves commitment from both the residents and the city. They have even developed an interactive page that describes how the system works.

It can be costly to rent an entire dump truck. You will also need to hire someone that can drive it. The easiest solution is the pay for a commercial company to come and remove it.

One company that will remove your project waste is 1-800-Got Junk. Charging by volume, they will remove old furniture, yard waste or any other left over products. There is a branch in Phoenix and one in Scottsdale.

Most dumps charge your waste removal by the weight. Typically, a sanitary worker will weight your car before and after you dump. They take the difference and multiply by it with a fixed fee.

Living in the technological age has allowed Americans to trash electronics as much as they buy them. To cut down on electronics in the dumps, Scottsdale has made an effort to help the problem. Computer parts, TVs, Cell phones, radios and much more can be recycled there.

Household cleaning chemicals should never be dumped down the drain or outside. They could contaminate the water table. That is why Scottsdale has dedicated several days a year to dump out your hazardous materials.

The company Macro's Crystal Clearing specializes in removing waste from construction sites. It is a family owned business that started in 1989 in Phoenix. They also provide many other services as well.

There are many companies that you can choose from in Arizona. When having someone remove your waste there are several features you should be aware of. Just because the trash is out of sight does not mean it should be out of mind.

You should think about where your trash goes after these companies remove your waste. You should ask what trash plant they bring the waste and what do they do with the recyclables. It is not a bad idea to ask because if it is improperly disposed of and it is connected to you and you might face littering fines.

People often pollute the most when removing waste becomes inconvenient. Scottsdale has made it easy to remove almost any waste that you will have. By being helpful, they understand that it will cut down on pollution. - 16477

How To Work With A Property Management Company

By C Bolden

I must say Property management companies can take the hassle out of renting in a big way. When you're first getting started renting property, I would personally recommend that you manage your property because doing it yourself saves you money that you would normally pay a property management company.

Managing your properties yourself teaches you the ins and outs of property management. This way, you'll better understand what a property management company can offer in the future, if you choose to use one. You'll most likely start off renting one or two units which are manageable number of properties.

Managing property is really about providing a list of people who do different tasks, such as plumbing, electrical work, and yard maintenance. When there's a problem, you simply call a repair person and make sure the problem gets fixed.

Now lets say you do change your mind and want to hire a property management company. What they do in your best interest is screen potential tenants and arrange for routine maintenance on the property. Property management companies want reliable tenants who plan to stay a long time, because that means more money for them and less time spent looking for new tenants and losing money through a lot of vacancies.

They also provides a point of contact for your tenants and when you go on vocations or travel, you'll need to find someone to manage your properties in your absence.

If you don't want the hassle of dealing with tenants yourself, or you live too far away from your rental property to make it convenient for you to manage the property personally, consider hiring a property management company to screen prospective tenants, collect rent, and arrange for the maintenance of the property.

To work with a good property management company, check out similar properties that appear well run. Ask tenants whether they are satisfied. Call the owners and ask them how satisfied they are with the management company. Then ask for the name of the property manager.

You must also remember, having a dependable property manager can be nearly as important as having dependable tenants. A well managed property will make money for everyone, which can free up your time to do something else. - 16477

Shallow Planted Tulips And Narcissus

By Keith Markensen

Midwest January

During the January thaw is a good time to start fighting common chickweed. It is in flower now having germinated in September and October. Soon it will be setting ripening seed. Walk across the lawn now pulling out the chickweed plants by hand while their fresh green leaves are conspicuous against the brown soil.

Protecting Shallow Planted Tulips and Narcissus

The long unseasonable fall experienced in the Midwest last year encouraged growth of tulips and narcissus. During February thaws they will begin to peek through the soil. Before they get nipped by frost, cover the bed with 2 or 3 inches of peatmoss or compost. Next fall plant the bulbs deeper.

Watering Evergreens

Even if rain and snow have fallen recently, it would be wise to check the soil under the evergreens. In many places last falls drought left the subsoil extremely dry. The evergreens require moisture during the winter.

Dormant Spraying

Dormant sprays can be applied whenever the temperature remains above freezing for at least twelve hours. If the trees are subjected to freezing temperatures less than twelve hours after application of the spray, they will be injured when the emulsion of oil and sulfur separates.

Starting Seed Indoors

Dont be tempted into starting seeds indoors unless a sunny window that can be kept fairly cool is available. But if you do have the right spot, you can start double petunias, Vinca rosea and other slow-growing annuals now. Dont start small-flowered petunias and marigolds and fast-growing plants until later.

Repotting Foliage Plants and Ferns

It's time now to repot foliage plants and ferns, for soon the light will become stronger and they will start new growth. Also, the plants can stand more water and possibly some light fertilizer.

Timely Reminders

Apply fertilizers now, before the spring rush of garden work begins or even before the life cycle of mealy bugs start. Clean up the garden and destroy weed seeds at the surface as well as mealy bugs, and the ashes will supply valuable potash to the soil.

Even though the lawn might be frozen, dont make paths over it. Heavy traffic causes soil compaction and often destroys the grass.

If the evergreens are not already tied up, as a protection against snow damage, they should be taken care of as soon as possible. - 16477

The Idea Of Landscape Plans

By Keith Markensen

March is a good time to work on the landscape plan for your home for those who live in the east, especially as it involves the views from the windows. I have my desk right in front of an up stairs window where I can see the whole back half of the yard. As I write this I have already visualized two or three Hicks yews to go in the place where my fireplace wood is stacked. Normally I won't have that much wood. And I feel the need of a little more evergreen in back of the bird bath on the one old stump to give it just a little better winter setting.

At this time of year one especially enjoys evergreen vines growing up the trunks of trees, whether they be English ivy with its many varieties or one of the many variations of the evergreen wintercreeper - Euonymus fortunei. They don't harm the tree, but they do give a lot of enjoyment to us and quite a bit of winter shelter to an occasional bird.

Project Planning

Do you keep a list of garden jobs that need to be done? I couldn't get along without one. The only trouble is the list gets longer and longer. I want to make a concrete bird bath right on top of the old oak stump with dark concrete to match the stump. It will be tricky making a form I of metal tacked to the bark to cast it, but the bird bath will be considerably larger than the present ceramic one that is there. And since the stone walk from the front sidewalk to the front door needs resetting and raising a little bit since the lawn has grown up I want to replace it with old brick. Then I can use the flat stones for a new low wall along the south path.

I have long envied my neighbor for her lovely old red ceramic chimney pot which she uses as a base for a sundial, and I am trying to find one. I don't believe they make them anymore, but some day maybe I will Find one in a junk yard or some place where it is no longer wanted.

The old regal privet that hides the compost pile will be grubbed out and since it is in a protected landscaping spot, it will be replaced with a rather tender evergreen, willow-leaf cotoneaster. I have enough Japanese euonymus, which is a nice bright shrub, to put in a hedge back of my cold frames and stone walkway. Of course I will have to be willing to have them injured if we get a really tough winter, but the roots live and they always come up again.

There are some three or four hundred seedling roses in the little nursery bed back of the garage that I am keeping until I see them bloom in hopes that I may have some nice pinks and speckled pinks in the batch. In the cold frame there are some wild flowers including closed gentians, showy ladyslipper, and bird foot violets that I got in late November from a wild flower nursery. I will find places for them this spring.

There is also a hardy bamboo (potted) that will go along the back fence to be tried for hardiness. I hope it won't love its place so well that it produces a bamboo jungle"but there's not much need to worry about that! We still need about a hundred feet of brick walk, six or seven bricks wide, here and there around the yard to give all-weather paths. They must be wide enough to take the little garden cart since I use it a lot instead of the big wheelbarrow. - 16477

Real Estate - Getting Rich the American Way

By Mark English

Private Property rights are protected by our constitution. The "due process" clause in the 5th and 14th amendments of the Bill of Rights protects us from any government attempt to deprive us of our property, without "due process of law." This means that any law, or any action against our property is subject to the courts review as to its constitutionality. This not only protects the owner, but also protects any creditor who may have a legally vested interest in our property. For example, if you give an EVERGREEN COLORADO MORTGAGE to a lender, to help you purchase your home, then the lender is also protected along with you. We, as Americans, are fortunate to have these protections, because they promote home ownership and long term financial gain.

For many of us, we spend our childhood in the same home. The house becomes part of our life, part of our memories, and part of our soul. We come to consider the house as home, and no matter where life takes us or where our interests lead, we will always think of our childhood house as home. I would like You to consider the fact, that the contemporary economic philosophy of parking your hard earned income in a 401k, and waiting for it to double, is just not realistic. Wall Street is either incompetent, or incapable of earning a retirement for you. They are in business to charge you commissions for every transaction, and much of your principal, and all of your dividends, are eaten up by these hungry investment managers. The way to secure Your financial future is to start a small business. Becoming an EVERGREEN COLORADO REAL ESTATE investor, and buying and renting out homes and apartment, is an attractive part time home business. It is time to take control of your future. Don't worry; starting your own business is a lot of fun.

The Treasury Department is giving You a bail out right here on Main Street. They have lowered the interest rates to historic lows. A 30 year fixed rate is about 5 " % for loans up to $417k. Just think, if you got an EVERGREEN COLORADO MORTGAGE REFINANCE or a CONIFER COLORADO REFINANCE, and lowered your monthly payment by $150.00, and reinvested the whole savings by paying down the principal on your loan, you would be making 5 " % returns on the money you save, by saving the interest on your mortgage. Now, if You further took your 401k money and paid additional principal on you EVERGREEN COLORADO MORTGAGE, you would be earning 5 "% on your 401k as well; after all a penny saved is a penny earned.

For the bold you can take it a step further and invest in rental property. Prices are at 20 year lows, and you can get an instant equity position in many desirable properties. You can leverage your investment property so that your tenant will pay your mortgage and You will profit through rents, equity build up, and favorable income tax treatment. If you put down enough money, so that the rents will cover the expense, then it will cost you nothing out of pocket each month, but you will benefit from all the tax benefits and long term equity. We can even look into an EVERGREEN COLORADO REFINANCE of you current home to free up the cash to get you started.

The tax man gives Real Estate special treatment, because Real Estate drives the economy and employment in the United States. When You think of all the investments available to an individual or family these days, putting your money in EVERGREEN COLORADO REAL ESTATE is as solid as the come. By buying a home of Your own you will save 25 % or more, of your costs, on your income tax bill. The interest and real estate tax deduction will also get you beyond the $5450.00 standard deduction ($10,900.00 filing jointly). Now, each and every other deduction is worth more. Your can now further deduct your state sales tax, charitable contributions, yearly auto tax registration, medical expenses and medical insurance premiums, capitalized loan points, etc., so your home get you over the hump, so to speak, and all your legitimate deductions are now more money in your pocket. And don't forget this is an investment you get to live in. You are no longer paying rent, and no longer investing in some one else's house, but in your own home. This investment belongs to you, and your heirs. Unlike many pensions, annuities, and Social Security this asset (or its cash equivalent) will survive you, and profit your children and grandchildren. - 16477

Visit the Store Instead of Sprouting Tuberous Begonias

By Kent Higgins

They will be indoors a full month longer than they should be and during this time they will be struggling to make the right kind of growth. Leaves and stalks will be pale and weak and the plants will not be the strong, vigorous type needed to start the season outdoors. Tuberous begonias started to root about the first of March will be developing during more favorable light conditions: the days are brighter and longer in April when they will be making leaf growth.

Sometimes tuberous begonias are planted too early because they have started to sprout and this suggests to the grower that the tuber wants to start growing again, that they will suffer if not permitted to grow. The young, pink sprouts may appear early, due to the storage conditions being too warm, thus encouraging growth.

By keeping the tubers in a cooler place this can be prevented. Preliminary rooting before top growth is made is essential with tuberous begonias. This rooting period takes about 30 days. By then there are enough roots, the top has grown a few inches and potting should be done.

Rooting in March, slow, steady growth in April and May, then planting or placing outdoors in late May is the time schedule for the handling of tuberous begonias in the North.

February is best devoted to getting prepared for the coming gardening season so that when the opening date arrives there will be no time lost in securing seeds and supplies, tools and equipment.

This is the month to visit the garden store. Storing begonia tubers and stocking up on things needed are necessary when the season starts. The gardening season is too short and northerners have too much to do in spring to be wasting time indoors purchasing begonia tubers when they can be in the garden.

Shopping in a garden store can be done much more leisurely now than after the season starts. Store associates have more time to serve you.

There be more time to discuss new varieties, equipment and methods. Now is the time to become acquainted with new soil conditioners, fertilizers, insecticides and fungicides. - 16477

Low Voltage Thing

By Kent Higgins

Some things are easy to understand and explain. Im trying to determine why my husband does some of the things the way he does around the house. His most current endeavor involves low volt lighting transformer and the simple name of this thing brings to mind image of childrens cartoon shows and toys.

How to describe the function of this low voltage transformer was no simple take for my confused hubby. Its an even larger task for me to understand the concept. However, I have a good excuse for this confusion and sometimes a person can know a little too much about a topic to be able to explain it in simple terms. My hubby works with electrical supplies on a daily basis. He does not have the option to break down things into smaller tasks.

I thought I was doing him a favor when I requested a step-by-step analysis of how this low voltage contraption functions for our house. This offer was responded to with a blank and glazed expression that denoted to me a promise of the impending confusion that would unveil itself in the next few sentences.

He started into his view about avoiding the whole discussion in its entirety by stating that I could not possibly be interested in things like this. Low voltage lighting transformer talk is so involved and confusing, and he grew more heated and lively as the argument in his head ensued, he simply huffed his shoulders and stated, I do not talk about shop at home.

With some poking and prodding, or what one may call nagging, I finally persuaded him to try and explain some of his projects to me. He finally came up with the textbook definition of a low-voltage lighting ideas and landscape lighting transformer thingie, then he knew what it felt like to be on the end of a dazed and confused expression.

The next thing was to find some useful analogy of what would bring this topic home for me. He selected drills and he reminded me that Id bought him a 12 volt drill for his birthday last year and I reminded him that we had returned that one in exchange for an 18 volt instead. He compared the regular drill with an 18 volt and then low volt lighting to its 12 volt cousin.

I was very confused and he was growing more annoyed by then I asked him why he would want to replace a high volt system with a lower volt one, after all was the higher one not better. He shook his head and decided to take another avenue, he started this time saying Lets say you have two hair dryers. - 16477

The Trick To Taking Care Of Saint Augustine Grass

By Jeff Henderson

Saint Augustine Grass is one of the best types of grass to grow in warm, humid areas, and is very popular in Florida. It can grow well in a variety of soil types, as long as you know a few basics about how to properly take care of it. During dry times, water the Saint Augustine lawn for around a half or an hour with sprinklers two times a week. When it is the wet season of the year, only water the grass when it is needed. You will be able to tell that the lawn needs watering when the grass begin to wilt. The individual blades will begin to fold, and turn from green to a more bluish-green color.

When it is time to mow your Saint Augustine grass, put the mower on a high setting. If you set the mower to cut the grass too low, it will damage the grass and reduce the grass's root growth. When you mow the lawn, go ahead and leave the extra grass clippings on top of the grass. These clippings actually put nutrients back into the soil, keeping the grass healthy. Leaving the clippings also can reduce the need to fertilize the grass. If there is too much grass and the clippings are in piles all over the lawn, then just let the clippings dry out and then scatter them over the lawn.

Approximately two weeks after the beginning of springtime, it is a good idea to apply a low-phosphorous fertilizer to the grass. If you do a good job of fertilizing your lawn, it will greatly increase the overall health of your lawn. Proper fertilization can even reduce Saint Augustine's susceptibility to weeds, insects, and disease. However, if you over-apply the fertilizer, or the fertilizer does not actually get to the grass, there is a possiblity that the fertilizer will leach through the soil or runoff the grass and go into the sewer system.

You can apply the fertilizer again anywhere from once to five times through the fall season. You do not need to do this, but it will make the lawn greener. Even with the best of care, however, Saint Augustine grass is generally not able to stay green throughout the winter months, but should become greener again after fertilization when it is springtime.

If you begin to notice that your lawn is getting brown patches with bare roots showing throughout, it probably means that you have a bug problem. The kind of bug that causes these brown spots are called chinch bugs. You will need to purchase insecticide that is specifically labeled to kill chinch bugs to get rid of them. - 16477

Hot Tips For Choosing The Perfect Bed For You.

By Peter Bunarton

I have been writing on decorating a bedroom and choosing great bedroom furniture, to achieve the bedroom that you've always wanted. Today I want to look at one specific item of bedroom furniture, your bed. Because the bed you choose has a big bearing on the success of your bedroom decoration efforts.

And the effect that your choice of bed has isn't just restricted to the way the bedroom looks and feels, but also how well you sleep, and that's as important as just about anything else about your bedroom.

A big part of how successful your bedroom furnishing and decorating will go is determined by your bed and bedding. They set the theme of your bedroom. For example you may love four poster beds but a four poster may not go with a contemporary feel to your bedrooom.

You need to spend some time thinking about the overall theme of your bedroom, and the bed you choose may well strongly influence that. Some beds are invisible and it doesn't matter, the duvet cover for example, and the valance together cover the entire bed and you can't see the bed at all, just the bedding. But some beds have a very specific look and if you want one of those, like for example the antique four poster bed, you need to make sure that the theme you select for your overall bedroom look fits in with the theme set by the bed.

Remember there are many different types of beds, so you need to do your homework before you choose your bed. Many different types of bed are really just different types of mattress. An air bed is just a bed with a mattress filled with air which can vary in firmness according to the amount of air pressure inside. And that can be adjusted.

And a water bed is just a water mattress. I can testify to how good a water bed is having had my own water bed for many years. I can highly recommend them, my water bed produced the most comfortable sleep I have ever had.

Or you could just go for a platform bed. This is pretty much as it's described. A platform on which is placed the mattress of your choice. So all you need to do is to decide on the mattress, and you've got yourself a bed. A platform bed is often used in conjunction with a futon mattress.

So when it's time to select your bed you have to make some choices. The first choice is to select the theme of your bedroom, this is the very first step. Once you've selected your theme you need to choose a bed that fits in with that theme. And you need to research your mattress choice by spending some time trying out lots of different mattresses to see what suits you.

So there's some of the things you need to decide upon when doing the bedroom decoration process, and the first one is to select a theme. The theme you decide on is where everything starts. Then you start on choosing your bed. - 16477

DIY Sunroom Kits Vs. Sunroom Contractors

By Andrew Caxton

The main problem why some homeowners are having second thoughts of building a sunroom is that the construction sometimes takes a lot of fuss. So many things should be monitored and be taken into consideration before you can enjoy your very own sunroom. But worry no more as do-it-yourself sunroom kits can put a big grin on your face. You no longer have to worry in hiring the best sunroom builder in town as you can do it on your own. Finding a DIY sunroom kit is no longer a task as the market now offers a huge array of DIY sunroom kits. The kit is usually comprised of all the needed materials in putting up a sunroom. Another advantage of opting for a do-it-yourself sunroom kit is that you can significantly save money. You no longer have to hire a sunroom builder just to put the room together as you can easily do it on your own. And depending on the type of sunroom kit you choose, you can also save money in the near future when it comes to energy and maintenance costs.

To most, the main reason why they opt for the do-it-yourself sunroom kit is to trim down all the expenses in sunroom construction. However, the cost of the kits could still vary depending on several factors. The very first thing that could affect the price of the sunroom kit is the type of materials to be used in the construction. Take for example you are using an aluminum sunroom, then expect the price to go high as compared to a sunroom with a block foundation sunroom that consists of greater number of windows and wood framing.

If your home already has a slab or deck, then this would serve as the perfect area to build your sunroom. This is ideal because it is already properly prepared and graded. For this, your next step is to properly measure the slab or deck before you order the DIY sunroom kit. However, not all homes have slabs. In this case, you need to ponder on where exactly to place your sunroom. You also need to grade and prepare the area on where you will be constructing the sunroom. By now, you will realize that it would be favorable on your part if your home already has a slab or deck to lessen your work and expenses as well. But if you are not familiar with building a slab, you can always seek the help if your trusted contractor. And from there, you can build the rest of the sunroom by yourself.

As a meticulous homeowner, settling for the very first sunroom kit you see is a big no-no. There are still some factors that you need to consider. Sunroom kits are usually designed that is not connected to the HVAC system. If you want a sunroom that is heated or cooled by your home's existing system, then a do-it-yourself kit is not ideal for you. Or else, you will merely rely on the fans and portable heaters or coolers to enjoy the comfort of the sunroom. So, if you are not fully satisfied with what a DIY sunroom kit can give you, then you can always seek the help of a reputable contractor.

Why You Must Improve Your Home Consistently

By Thomas Johnsen, CPC

There are lots of reasons that you might be interested in improving your home. Perhaps you are interested in improving the quality of the home for resale, or perhaps you are simply interested in improving it or enlarging it to provide for the comfort of your family. Take some time to really consider what your options are going to be when you are thinking about moving forward with your home improvement projects, there are lots of great ways for you to move forward.

The first room to look at for some added space, or to add some more value to the house is to install a new bathroom. Installing a new bathroom is much simpler than most people usually think, and with just a minimum of home improvement knowledge, you will see how easy it truly is. So think about this to see if this is what you are looking for.

Among other things, a new bathroom will ensure that no one needs to wait to shower or to prepare for work in the mornings. What might have been fine when there were just one or two people in the home become more unpleasant when there are more! Consider how much time you could save if there was another bathroom, even one that was just a toilet and a sink.

You will need to examine where you will place this extra bathroom, and you will discover there is more than one choice on where the bathroom can go. A room can be added to the house for a first choice. You may think this would be too costly but it isn't. But some opt to go to the basement an install this new bathroom, there is usually easy accessibility to a drain system, and this doesn't change the whole square footage of the house.

There are also lots of other home improvements projects that you may want to undertake. For instance, a lot of people find that just a new paint job can really open things up for them. Take a long look at the walls in your home. Do they look dingy or tired? It might be time to freshen them up with a new coat of paint, and you will be surprised at what this can do.

Carpeting is another great option for sprucing up your house. As you are tearing up the carpet you may just find hardwood flooring down. Also for basements or workshop the self-adhering tiles are great to add a finished look.

If you are thinking about home improvement, you need to keep and few things in mind. First think of the budget you have for it. Then add up the time you need to put your energy into it. If this is a job you have not performed before you may have to consult an expert for advice or for them to do it for you. You will need to analyze the cost of the materials for this project so you know if you can proceed according to your budget.

There are lots of home improvement projects that you can tackle on your own, so don't miss out! Improve your home and do it on your own! - 16477

Wood Blewits

By Harold Hartford

Clitocybe nebularis is one of the sturdiest representatives of its genus. It is readily identified by its loudy whitish cap, whose surface has a slight ashp:ey bloom, and by its sharp aromatic distinctive men, reminiscent of soap. It grows gregariously in different types of woods and even outside them.

The flesh also later becomes whitish or greyish and has a pleasant scent. This characteristic purple colour, however, lasts for a long time on the stipe. Wood Blewits arc excellent edible mushrooms, appropriate for a variety of dishes. They are especially delicious when pickled in vinegar. They can be easily found by mushroom-pickers because they usually grow gregariously and also in the season when other edible mushrooms are scarce.

Like Blewits, fresh fruit-bodies of Wood Blewits contain a substance which damages red blood- cells. However, it is neutralized by boiling and so thoroughly cooked mushrooms are not dangerous. Wood Blewits can be confused with some purple species of the Cortiwarivs genus. However, all of these are distinguished by their rust-brown spore powder, by the presence of the cobweb-like veil (cortina) and by their unpleasant smell.

Edible mushrooms can be found not only in forests, but also in meadows, pastures and on grassy slopes. Blewits are among the most substantial and tasty. They even attract the inexperienced eye because they often grow in circles in patches of dark green grass, which ate a strikingly deeper green than the rest of the sward. A similar phenomenon may be observed in the Fairy-ring champignon (Marasmius oreades) and is due to the production of nitrogen, which enriches the soil and provides additional nourishment for green plants. This is one example of the symbiosis of certain fungus mycelia and adjacent green plants.

The flesh of the Blewits has a pleasant mushroom taste and scent, the stipe is short and looks as if it had been stained with ink. Blewits are excellent edible mushrooms, and can be prepared in a number of ways. Their utility is further increased by the fact that they can still embellish our diet when other edible mushrooms are on the decline.

In calm weather conditions it is possible to smell the scent of Clitocybe adorn at a distance of several metres away, especially when several specimens arc growing together in one spot. This species is edible and best utilized when added to mixtures of other, less aromatic mushrooms. It grows predominantly in spruce forests amongst rotting needles. It loses its typical scent when it is dried out. - 16477

Preserving Flowers Through Waxing Process

By Steven Karback

To preserve flowers they should be dipped in melted paraffin which should be just hot enough to maintain the fluidity. The flowers should be dipped one at a time, held by the stalks and moved about for an instant to get rid of air bubbles. Fresh cut flowers, free from moisture, are said to make excellent specimens when treated in this way.

There are other methods listed for preserving flowers as well. I have been giving preserving roses with wax some thought and while never having tried wax on rose blooms (not artificial blooms), I question being able to apply a finish. My experience finishing cloth, lightweight print cloth as well as heavy duck causes me to make this statement.

The heat necessary to melt the wax plus the vehicle (solvent) would be harmful to the petals. Application and even distribution of the compound by dipping. or brushing would present a problem as tension, roller coating would be harmful. Perhaps a starch or other clear film would be the base product you are looking for instead of wax?

Here again solvents would enter into the picture except for starch which could have a water vehicle, as well as another base product which I am thinking about which has been used for sizing other than glue.

This may be looked at as negative regarding the above because but there might be someone who has formulated a wax application and in the meantime Ill give it some more thought.

Enclosed some catalogs find a method for preserving rose blooms by waxing. Dont know if it is successful for flower seeds as we have yet to try the process. Cut rose buds that show a little color, allowing as much stem as possible. Dip a part of the lower stem in hot wax and cool. Wrap entire stem and bud securely in waxed paper. Be sure the wrapping is airtight.

Then store in a dark, cool place (not below 35 Fahrenheit). As much as six months later if you want flowers, remove paper, cut wax dipped end off and place stems in tepid water. - 16477

Energy Conservation Tips: Components of a Homemade Solar Panel

By Energy Conservation

Reducing the carbon footprint is fast becoming the goal of many households across the nation. The use of solar panels can reduce energy consumption by using the clean, renewable resource of the sun to generate electricity. If done properly, this technol

The fundamental unit of every solar panel is the photovoltaic or PV cell. Although panels can be a pricey investment if you have someone obtain and install them for you. For those of us on a budget, substantial cost savings can be obtained using kits, building them from components, or even refurbishing broken panels. Building the number of solar panels can actually generate enough power for you to sell energy back to the grid.

While more sophisticated systems require a greater number of components, there are four key elements of a homemade solar panel system, which include: Solar panel; Charge controller or regulator; Battery; and Inverter.

The solar panel: While we see the system as a solar panel, the total voltage is the sum of the voltage of all the photovoltaic cells in the system. To determine how many panels are needed we need to look at and average out the energy usage that appears on our bills.

Charge controller or regulator: Maintaining control of the energy flow prevents overcharging the batter and is the job of the Charge Controller. This unit also maximizes the efficiency and life of the system by monitoring the discharge status both in the daytime and evening.

The battery: Storing electricity is the job of the battery, but not all batteries are alike. The deep-cycle marine battery is superior the run of the mill automobile battery because it is able to store all of the electrical energy generated by the solar panel.

Inverter: Virtually all of our electrical appliances utilize AC or Alternating Current, whereas the electricity generated and stored in our solar powered system is DC or Direct Current. Therefore, the Inverter is the key to converting DC current into AC, making it useable by everything from the lights to the refrigerator.

If a solar panel system is designed with the intent of generating enough electricity to "sell back" to the Grid, then the components will include the AC Breaker Panel, and the Kilowatt-per-Hour Indicator are required. The KW per Hour indicator, for example is necessary to track how much current is provided to and from the grid to determine the charge or credit that appears on your monthly electric bill.

We should also not forget the obvious energy saving tips including the shutting off of lights in unused rooms and the use of Energy-saver fluorescent bulbs.

In summary, homemade solar panels can be an important part of a plan to implement energy conservation tips. Homemade solar panel systems for the DIY enthusiast and be obtained in kit form in which all of the components are readily available, or they can be obtained new or used from several sources from home improvement stores to eBay. - 16477

Asarabacca

By Derek Williams

Whole carpets of Asarabacca are often found embellishing the undergrowth of broad-leaved forests, particularly in hilly country, in soils rich in humus. However, this favoured environment is not its only one: it is present, too, in shaded scree forests, ash/maple woodlands, mixed beech forests, and waterside ash woods. This is a plant of Europe and Siberia, although its numbers in Europe decline towards the north-west and it is extremely rare, and probably not native, in Britain.

In western Europe, it forms distinctive communities in hornbeam woodlands. Together with many other herbs it contributes to the wealth of their undergrowth. It also occurs in acid soil, oak forests, or rather testifies to their subsidiary development where oak/hornbeam stands once stood. Greater Stitchwort is common in fertile soils, waterside thickets, and on colluvial as well as alluvial deposits. It also occurs in hedgerows, shrub growth, and forest margins.

Ramsons' association with various kinds of forest indicates a certain adaptability to soil acidity: it is a plant which likes some acid soils as well as some neutral to slightly alkaline soils.

Greater Stitchwort is distributed in Europe and western Siberia, but appears to be absent in the Alps. The range of S. nemorum extends to the more westerly parts of Europe.

Ramsons is a bulb that is narrowly elongate, measuring from 2-6 cm in length, with whitish yellow scales. The flowering stem is either triangular or semi-circular. There arc usually only two basal leaves on a flowering plant, each 2-5 cm wide with long stalks. The flower complex is semi-circular. White and star-like individual flowers are produced from April in the lowlands and to June at higher elevations.

Perhaps it is the scent which has given rise to the suggestion - not confirmed by experts - that the plants are pollinated by snails, a notion reinforced by the fact the flowers are clustered so close to the ground. The seeds of asarums are dispersed by ants. - 16477

How 'Refi' Your Mortgage Could Lead You In A Potential Tax Trap

By Neil1001

Do you know the fastest way you can get audited by the IRS, and slapped with interest and penalties when using a Home Equity Line of Credit?

You are not sure what I am talking about

It is not your fault. You are not alone. We are told that HELOC interest is deductible for tax purposes but sometimes, especially in this economy, this may not be the case, and you could land up in serious trouble with the IRS.

When you refinance on your home and use the money for any reason other than home improvement, the IRS limits your deduction for interest. In some cases you won't be able to claim the deduction at all.

Well, the way this is set up, the IRS in general does allow you to deduct interest on your HELOC for tax purposes. They call this the home equity indebtedness deduction.

The home equity indebtedness means:

The IRS generally gives you a deduction based as follows: You are allowed to claim mortgage interest deduction up to $100,000 if you file a joint return or up to $50,000 if you file a separate return. This relates to refinancing or borrowing extra from your mortgage.

Here is what the IRS does to limit your deduction.

Let us look at the following example to see how this works.

Let us make an assumption that you owe $260,000 on your mortgage and that you bought your home for $300,000.

Now assume at this point in time you decide to borrow against your home and take out an additional $30,000 from your HELOC. The key question is, are you allowed to deduct the interest paid on the $30,000 as a mortgage interest tax deduction? Let's make one more assumption that your home is valued at $320,000 the day you decide to borrow money from your HELOC.

You may be in for a surprise. If you previously claimed a deduction or thought of claiming a deduction this year, the IRS may limit your interest deduction lowering your refund.

The best way to figure out what you can deduct is to do a simple calculation. According to the IRS you need to take the value of your home ($320,000) and from this you deduct the cost of your home ($300,000). The difference of ($20,000) is what you are able to claim as an interest deduction. You thought you may claim the entire $30,000 but as you can see the IRS limits this.

Now here is the biggest surprise of all. If you home is currently worth less than what you bought this for, you cannot claim interest on the borrowed money if you use the money for personal reasons. So for example if you bought the home for $300,000 and it is now fallen down in value in this market, and the value is $280,000, the IRS prevents you from deducting the interest you borrowed on the $30,000. Bad news, especially in this year when the home prices have fallen, you may not be able to claim a deduction for interest when you borrowed on the HELOC.

How do you know if you are caught up in this tax trap?

Please click on the links below and quickly access a list of points or a special check list. In this list, we have provided the steps preventing you from making a silly mistake when preparing your tax return.

I strongly recommend that you contact your tax accountant immediately if you have used your HELOC funds for personal use in the last year. This will ensure that you claim the right deductions and prevent yourself from being audited.

Landscape Design Planning For A Great Landscape

By Kent Higgins

If you want to make the most attractive and beneficial use of your grounds, you'll want to make sure you plan your landscaping very well. Most people take the idea of pathways, coverage, foliage and so forth for granted, having no idea how much thought and planning it requires to get it just right. Properly planning ahead is the key to having a great looking landscape.

You'll want to consider several elements in your design, including access (walkways), lighting (if any), coverage, and color. One of the most often overlooked plants are trees, as they are not only to be incorporated in the beginning, but must be accommodated over time as they grow and take up more space and ad more beauty to the landscape.

Remember that trees have an annual cycle of growth, leaf shedding, flowering, and so forth. Some trees do this more than others, with evergreens shedding almost all year round and larger-leafed trees shedding all at once. Be aware of this and how it will affect your landscape's overall look.

The overall design of your landscape, whether it be a huge undertaking or just a few square feet of yard, is to think is layers. Think of the background, middle ground, and foreground and what elements will be in them to create the texture and layers you want. Also be aware of how you'll need to get through these areas to work with the plants, care for them, or just get around the space in daily activity. This is where walkways, often hidden by the middle ground elements, will come into play.

Use trees to screen the property and, if needed, to provide shade for the plants that enjoy that so that you can incorporate variety into your landscape design. The prettier, flowering plants are usually the foreground plants, but you should be aware of their flowering cycles so that there are no bare spots during the year. Also be aware of how large some plants can get and be sure to include plant selection plans for your design.

Finally, you should begin by planting the larger plants (trees, shrubs, etc.) first and work your way down the list to the smallest and easiest of the group. Seasonal planting should also be incorporated so you aren't having to do all of the work at once. Some plants prefer fall plantings (most trees, for instance) and some prefer spring planting (most flowers). Others can be planted at almost any time so long as they have a good climate for recovery (anytime in summer).

Most importantly, don't forget to stop and smell the roses and enjoy your beautiful landscape and garden! Watch it through the year as it goes through changes and start planning your improvements for next year. That's a big part of the fun! - 16477

Knowing the Best Furniture

By James Nelson

Every American home has a piece of furniture lying around the floor. As of today, art has braised wonders in creating a wide variety of furniture that have different resources, construction and devise. With this collection, getting your own piece of furniture is often a grueling task to perform. For someone who may be buying furniture for the first time in his/her life, a few facts are always helpful. To help those who plan to buy the perfect furniture for their house, here are some pieces of information that may guide you along the way.

As an output of artistic ventures, furniture prides in ornamental decorations and designs. For other religions, furniture is used to symbolize deities and primordial beings. Sculptors also create artifacts for spaces used in interior designing. These sculpted pieces are used to express ethnicity in different traditions and ways of life.

Upholstered furniture and case goods represent the two basic furniture types. Upholstered furniture, by the name itself, relates to fixtures with fabric covers such as couches and bed pads. This allows a more comfortable feeling of lounging in seat supports and cushions.

Case goods, on the other hand, are those that come in as they are, without any upholstery, coats or wraps. These are usually collections of cupboards, shelves and tables. Most case goods are rawer in design since they display naked carvings on woods and other cement. Both types of furniture are usually made out of softwood or hardwood materials.

Softwood is relatively cheaper than hardwood, which is made of oak, maple, holly and boxwood. Softwood, on the other hand, has spruce, fir, hemlock and pine as part of its materials.

Knowing what design you will be following prior to buying furniture will help direct your purchase. When you go into a furniture shop without any knowledge of what piece of furniture you will buy, you may end up buying something overly expensive and yet not worth any penny. You can base it on the purpose of the furniture. Is it going to be used for a short or long while?

A good example is when buying a highchair for your baby. More often than not, this will only be used for less than five years, when compared to buying a table or a cabinet.

Knowing how a piece of furniture will be used will also help you out in searching for the right chair or table. If you need a comfortable chair that you can use for siestas, you would have to find something with a back support.

Space is also essential when considering which piece of furniture to buy. If you buy a large dinner table that may occupy the entire dining room, it will be harder for you to find chairs for sitting and spaces for walking.

Lastly, a good budget will always be helpful in making a good buy for furniture. Knowing how much you want to spend will estimate the number of furniture pieces as well as the class of fixtures you will be buying. - 16477
