Make Your Landscape Colorful With Potted Tulips

By Steven Karback

Any corrective pruning should be finished in February. Remember to paint all wounds over one inch in diameter with a pliable water-proof paint. This prevents drying out and checking of the wood and resultant decay and also prevents the entrance of disease or insects.

Do not prune the early flowering shrubs such as forsythia, lilac, spirea, quince, currant, red bud, peach, etc., until after flowering as any material removed now will reduce the number of flowers. Prune these after flowering to encourage new growth for blooms next year.

This is the month to do shearing or pruning of evergreens as they are usually unsightly after this operation, but with the beginning of new growth, they are unsightly for a shorter period of time. Prune the flowering shrubs that bear their blooms on new wood like althea, vitex, crape myrtle, and buddleia - this will stimulate flower production.

Whatever pruning you do, especially on your shade grapes trees, be sure you know what you are doing or call a recognized tree surgeon. Do not butcher your trees or allow inexperienced "tree surgeons" to do so. Irreparable damage can be done and often results in the death of the tree.

Birds

Repair and paint the bird houses early and get ready for new tenants. Birds do not care for the smell of paint, so allow time enough for the smell to weather out. Avoid the use of metal on bird houses or feeding stations it reflects light and is also noisy, both of which will scare birds. Remember, they are extremely wary and are easily frightened away, never to return.

Encourage your youngsters to provide and care for the facilities for the birds. They will very soon become "bird-watchers," giving them a wholesome pastime and invaluable training in conservation and nature study.

February is the month to bring in potted tulips, daffodils and other bulbs and start them to growing. Keep in a fairly cool place until the foliage turns green and then keep the temperatures under 60 degrees until the buds form. This will prevent ungainly growth or "leggy" stems.

Feed with liquid food after the foliage turns green to improve the overall quality of the blooms. This feeding gives intensity of color and beautiful substance to the petals as well as increasing the size of bloom.

On those few days of inclement weather, rework the house plants. For those plants that have spindled, or "leggy" growth, due to lack of sunshine or crowded conditions, pinch back to stimulate new growth and bloom. Take out a little of the, top soil in the pot and replace with fresh potting soil. Feed lightly with liquid food or a dissolved commercial fertilizer.

Divide or make cuttings of the plants that have spent the winter indoors and will soon be planted in the garden border such as geraniums, coleus, hibiscus, Jacobs coat, etc. Prepare the potted plants for a return to "garden duty" during the summer months.

Many such plants provide a point of accent or spot of color in a garden or patio design. - 16477

Entrance Mats

By Bart Icles

When you arrive outside a home or an office, what do you usually see around you prior to be being let inside? It could be a lot things around you, but surely you'll have noticed, even absentmindedly, the unobtrusive and lowly rectangular object strategically placed beneath the door before you; it may have a welcome sign of greeting or not, it may be bright in color or not, but such trivialities are solely dependent on the master of whose territory you are about to enter. As you stand there, the question flashes inside your mind faster than the speed of light can match: to wipe or not to wipe? Before you answer, let's take a close and serious look at the subject of your pondering?

The entrance mat, or doormat, is defined by TheFreeDictionary website, as "a flat object placed immediately outside or inside the entrance to a house or other building, to allow people to easily scrub or wipe the soles of their shoes before entering". Did you get the part ..."to allow people to easily scrub or wipe the soles of their shoes before entering". Not only does this lowly contraption function as a welcoming tool for all visitors, it also serves as a tool for cleaning your shoes.

It scrubs your shoe to keep dirt, dust, grime, allergens, and whatever unimaginable things that might be stuck underneath it from contaminating the inside of a room. When a room's upkeep is kept to a minimum, the owner can therefore save money meant for cleaning materials, and can spend it on other important objects like... a dvd movie, or a new Xbox, perhaps.

Most entrance mats nowadays are dependable and durable. It's effective in catching and containing liquids and debris and keeping your area hazard-free with its anti-spill and anti-slip qualities. With entrance mats guarding your doorsteps all year round, the possibility of dirt, dust, grime, or those deadly, sneaky allergens invading your home is now a thing of the past. They also come in sturdy and durable designs, making them stay with you for quite a longer time than any ordinary doormat can offer.

Because of these inherent qualities, keeping them in good condition has never been easier to do. If they're just lightly dirty or dusty, just go to an open space and shake that baby until there's no more dust or dirt left in it. If somehow it's very pregnant with dirt and grime, just go wash it with detergent and a hose, hang it to dry, and pretty soon - like maybe a few minutes or so, it'll be dry and ready for use again.

The entrance mat. No fuss, no muss! - 16477

DIY Wind Generators Make Free Energy!

By Arnold Thomas

Life everyday in the house can be full of struggles for some especially with all of the economic issues going around. Normal people generally have tons of bills to pay which is why they need to work so hard to afford them all and make sure that they don't have any increasing debts to pay off.

There are some bills which you really can't do too much about; your mortgage or rent aren't going to decrease and you most likely need your cell phone and internet access too much to cut back on these bills. You can save in a lot of ways, but many expenses are simply unavoidable.

Electricity is one bill which you can save on, however. You can use the best conservation methods, unplugging unused appliance and the like, but there's only so much money you can save this way and of course, if the people you live with aren't also diligent about these things, you may be frustrating yourself quite literally over a few pennies.

The answer isn't necessarily to use less electricity, but to get it from clean, renewable alternative energy technologies. You can reduce the amount of power you buy from your local utility company and you may even be able to replace all of this electricity with power you can generate yourself!

Wind and solar energy are the two most commonly used alternative energy sources. Solar energy is a great alternative energy source whose benefits are well known. However, wind power is something which many people pass on, thinking that they will need a large scale wind farm in order to supply their homes with power.

It's actually a lot simpler than all that. With just a couple of wind turbines installed on your rooftop, you can save a lot of money on your energy costs. Wind turbines are easy to build and you can get the materials cheaply online or locally at junkyards and other sources.

On windy days, your rooftop wind turbines can provide for much of your energy needs and will save you a lot of money on your energy bills over the long run. The more turbines you build, the more you'll save on your electricity bill.

Wind turbines generate electricity using its electrical generator and rotors the same way solar panels produce electricity using multiple solar panels. However wind turbines can continue to work even at night allowing you to store greater amounts of energy if the wind is good.

Wind turbines may not work for every homeowner, but even those with a rooftop to mount their turbines on in a densely populated urban area will find these turbines to produce a significant savings on their electricity bills. Wind power can be put into use at a low cost and with relative ease, allowing users to have access to all of the electrical energy they need, even on a tight budget. - 16477

How To Get Massive Back Links To Your Site? (Part II)

By Hass67

I had talked about the importance of getting lots of back links to your site in one of my earlier articles. Back links are important for ranking well in the search engines. Back Link building is also called Off Page Optimization in SEO.

Now, sites that link back to your website and the page rank of those sites are important. Getting back links with irrelevant sites dont count with the search engines. It is a wasted effort. How do search engines decide about the relevance of the site pointing to your website?

Search engines also consider the anchor text used in linking back to your site. For example, if your website is about dating than the anchor text: dating tips may be given more importance than the anchor text: recommended website.

Search engines also consider the page title of the website linking to you. If the website is considered to be an authority site by a search engine like Google, the back link will get more importance.

In nutshell, you should try to get quality back links from those sites that are related to your websites niche. Those sites should be considered as authority sites by the search engines like Google. The anchor text used to link back to your website should contain your websites niche related keyword.

Getting back links from authority sites is what counts with the search engines. But it is not easy to get links from authority sites. How to go about it?

You must have heard about social book marking sites. Social book marking sites like del.icio.us, digg, furl, propeller, stumble upon etc are very popular with Google. Most of them have a page rank of 6+.

If you can bookmark your website on these sites, you can get lots of quality one way links. Dont forget, many people visit these social bookmarking sites, so you can get many visitors in addition to back links as well. - 16477

Affordable Wind Turbines

By Arnold Thomas

If you want to keep the electricity flowing into your home, you have to do the same thing as all of your neighbors do each month - write a check to the local utility company. Since you generally pay based on your electricity usage, this is one of those expenses which you have some control over.

Depending on the number of appliances and other electronics that you have in your house, your electric bills can easily exceed past your regular budgets putting a dent on your future plans and investments for other endeavors. It is always important to keep your bills to a minimum because electricity isn't the only bill that you need to pay. You got the phone bills and other utilities that needs to be paid as well.

It's always a good thing to conserve energy where you can - it can reduce your energy bills and of course it's also good for the environment. However, there is only so much to be saved this way and if you live with people who don't get it like you do, it can be difficult to make much headway with your conservation efforts.

The answer to this problem is to use additional energy alternatives so you can reduce the usage of the electricity that you really pay for. If you think about the other types of energy, both solar and wind power should come into your mind. However, if your area doesn't have any wind or solar power plants you're pretty much hopeless right?

You can use alternative energy sources to power your home all by yourself; you don't need a utility company or your own power plant. There are smaller-scale technologies which allow you to supply your home with energy through wind power or solar energy. The only question is which of these alternative energies is best for your needs; and which fits best into your budget?

Solar energy is great and while I definitely don't want to discount it as a viable alternative energy source, it's also very expensive to get started with. Solar panels are anything but cheap and you'll need a lot of them if you plan to provide all of your own electricity using a solar power system.

Wind power, by contrast can be gotten up and running for a low cost. You can even make your own wind turbines using cheap and widely available parts. You can find everything you need online or at your friendly neighborhood junkyard for a low cost. All you need is some rotors, a structure to support them and a generator to handle converting the wind energy into electricity.

It's cheap and incredibly easy to build a wind turbine, so you can build as many as your home needs or you have the space to set up on your rooftop or elsewhere on your property. The more turbines you have, the more you'll save on your energy bills; you may be able to meet all of your home's energy needs and possibly even sell your surplus energy to your local utility company! Imagine receiving a check instead of a bill each month!

Especially if you live in a rural area, you can generate a lot of power using your wind turbines. Placing your turbines as high off the ground as possible will give you the best results; on your rooftop is usually the best place. Even those who live in large cities can take advantage of the benefits of wind power to lower their electricity bills - all it takes is a roof and a little DIY know-how. - 16477

Digital Cameras Are Environmentally Safe Bits of Technology

By Nick Kusina

Digital cameras are used by all the peoples around the world now. Digital cameras are significantly advanced than common cameras. There are various downsides present when making a usual camera of use whilst digital cameras give improved functioning. We are able to carry with us our digital cameras to all the locations we holiday at and we can look over the snap shots and obtain a photograph of the site. The gain in making use of this kind of camera is that it does not initiate even a slight alteration to the milieu. A lot of manufacturers have commenced bringing in assorted styles of digital cameras at an affordable fee so that it will be cost-effective to individuals.

Digital cameras possess a system which keeps the pictures in the memory and they have a sensing element that aids in fixing the snap shots. It's trouble-free to convey the photographs to other software systems.

The use of regular cameras triggers pollution to the environment in various ways. They are:

When we make use of these cameras we have to make for photo film processing center to generate the photos.

To turn a film into a photograph, there are various working steps.

To rinse the photo films, we should make use of several elements. These chemicals comprise of fixer solutions plus developer solutions. This sort of mixtures used in the film processing centres is exceedingly dangerous.

When the developing process is compete, the elements are disposed into the milieu. This causes the air contamination which is incredibly harmful for the survival of individuals.

In the huge chemical establishments, they are instructed to observe the standards presented by the board. Whilst the photo centre are trivial establishments thusly they don't need to abide by the rules and regulations.

Some times, these throwaway chemicals after their usage are disposed into the river, which causes water pollution. When these substances blend with the drinking water, they are dreadfully bad to our wellness. And will likewise devastate the products when farmers make use of the river water for irrigation.

The prior remarked drawbacks are not marked in the digital cameras. But we make use of inkjet printers for publishing the picture replicate from the digital system. We may suppose that even this inkjet element will make an impact on the environment. These elements are not disposed into the environs. And some folks may assume of the batteries we utilize in these cameras. As the batteries also contain the chemicals that are injurious to the human being. To surmount these shortcomings at the present time we have rechargeable batteries and so that throwing away of batteries can be precluded.

The advantage of operating digital cameras is:

The important thing in using a digital camera is their handling. The photographs can be broadcasted to the detectors in separate digital systems.

We can develop the wanted photographs alone, it's not needed to develop all the films.

We can make many snaps given that the memory ability is certainly big.

We can additionally snap video recordings in the digicams.

The utilisation of rechargeable batteries will increase the use time quickly.

We are capable to view the pictures in all the digital systems.

It is trouble-free to carry to all the views. But we should be tremendously mindful in bringing it close to water bodies. - 16477

Pros To Having Your Own Wind Turbine

By Arnold Thomas

Like all of your neighbors, you probably get all of the electricity you need from your local utility. Of course, they don't provide this as a public service and energy bills can represent a significant portion of your household expenses. You probably already do your best to conserve energy, but are basically resigned to the fact that every month, you'll pay the electric bill, no matter how expensive it is. However, alternative energy is available and you can use this clean, renewable energy to power your home.

Solar energy is a good choice; if you have an awful lot of money to spend, that is. While it's renewable and non-polluting and certainly no one would argue that it isn't a great source of energy, it's also far too expensive for most people. A single solar panel is quite expensive and many panels are needed to meet the energy needs of most homes.

This is why other households utilize wind energy instead because it overcomes the limitations of solar energy and is a suitable energy resource that can save you some of your paid electricity since it is renewable and clean as well. All you need is a few wind turbines and your home should be up and running.

Wind turbines are a relatively simple thing; the rotors are turned by the wind and this kinetic energy is converted to electricity which can be used immediately or stored on special batteries. Having your own wind turbines at your home is something which can be very beneficial.

Unlike solar panels, it's easy to build your own wind turbines. You'll just need rotors, a structure to mount them on and a generator to transform the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity. You may also need a transformer and batteries depending on your particular setup. All of these parts are readily available and inexpensive. Tutorials, schematics and other instructions can be found online which will walk you through the process.

You can get all of the parts online or even at your local junkyard among other sources. It's possible you already have some of the supplies you'll need just lying around! You can get creative with your wind turbine building and repurpose some parts which are gathering dust around your home.

If you live in a rural or suburban setting where there's not much to shelter you from the wind you'll be able to get the best results; but there are plenty of city dwellers with wind turbines on the roof of their brownstones, so as long as you have some room and an interest in saving on your energy bill, you can use wind turbines to lower your expenses. You can use the power as you generate it or store excess energy in batteries for later.

If you want to make alternative energy a part of your personal energy strategy, wind power is definitely worthy of your consideration. They're pretty easy to build and if you find that the first turbine isn't meeting all of the energy needs of your home, you can simply build another. They're incredibly cheap to build and they will quickly more than pay for themselves in reduced energy costs. - 16477

How To Combine Suncatchers With Windchimes!...

By Anna Meenaghan

Suncatchers and windchimes, I think, are always an effective item. Generally they can be produced quite easily from items that you already own. So what I am about to suggest making, is done using old compact discs.

This sounds simple enough, so how can I start? And with what? Some CD's, scissors, adhesive, bells and whatever you would like to use to hang this on. Twine, a very thin ribbon, string, cord, there are so many colour choices available now in local craft stores.

So let us try. Firstly, assuming that you have some nice and really bright colourful CD's, let's try with four to start with. Take the glue and stick two together with the labels on the inside. Now repeat this with the other two. I only say use coloured discs so that the end product will be more effective.

Obviously you will be able to adapt this in size to suit your basic requirements. Now, with a narrow coloured string, or even ribbon or cord, cut about thirty six inches. What you will do next, is to thread one end of the cord, say through the middle of one of your CDs, so that you have an even amount of the cord on both sides and knot it firmly at the outer edge of the CD.

Your second CD now needs to be added to this so that it will end up on top of the first one. To do this, one string has to go through the middle of the CD and be joined with the other string and knotted at the outside edge again and then knot again.

How about adding some bells to these now? You might be able to buy some coloured bells, but if you can only get the silver ones, I would find myself tempted to paint these different colours with an acrylic metallic paint, particularly if you are using coloured CD's. The more hectic the look, the better. Keeping your strings together, thread a bell through, and this will be just at the top of your two CD's, fix this, and then another two inches up, add one more.

The bells themselves can be tied on, or knotted, and you don't necessarily have to do them with the thread double. It would also be possible to hang these on both ribbons and space them in different places. Basically, how many bells you want to use and where, is entirely up to you. If you use more bells, you may need more ribbon for when you tie it at the top.

You may now decide you would like something at the bottom of your CD's. So, how about adding two or three strings of coloured glass beads, or mix them with your bells, so that the beads will chink together. These would still help to catch the light.

This would work similarly with silver CD's, but there is nothing to stop you spraying these with other colours. Crystal beads would work well with silver CD's.

This would hang well from a tree! - 16477

Different Varieties Of Wall Clocks

By William Warford

Interior design is very important to many. This is because when visitors come into one's home, they form an impression regarding the owners of that home based on how the home is set up especially the living room.

Researchers have also found that the appearance of a room can affect the mood of those that in the room and even aspects such as relaxation can be affected by the arrangement of the room.

There are many ways to decorate one's living room. While furniture plays a great role in this, people often forget that wall clocks can be a very effective way of both decorating and also time management.

In Wall Speakers Are Gaining Popularity

By Im Chen

We have all entered into offices or homes and been entertained by soothing musical melodies. These usually seem to emanate from invisible speakers. Because of the surround sound effect, we get to hear music in all its effects but cannot pinpoint the exact location of the said speakers.

This effect is intentionally created by the use of in-wall speakers. These contemporary speakers are obscured in wall panels or roof ceilings and at times at the rear of furniture. They make the office or room more warm and inviting by entertaining guests with comforting and gentle music.

In wall speakers are extremely beneficial. Their miniature dimensions make them ideal for places with space limitations. The diminutive size also helps reduce congestion in the room. In-wall speakers are especially relevant today when people are trying to eliminate clogging of rooms by reducing paper and number of furniture in the room.

Another advantage is the fact that they are very convenient. Many speakers still spot crazy wiring running inside the wall paneling from the tuner or receiver to the actual speakers. Wireless speakers on the other hand have technology that totally does away with the mess of wiring that we have become so accustomed to.

We mentioned that in wall speakers are a welcome boost in the fight to reduce clutter. More and more offices are starting to recognize the negative aspects of allowing clutter in their midst. Clutter does not just refer to paper but to anything that clogs a room and hinders efficiency. In-wall speakers have gone a long way to resolve this problem permanently.

However in wall speakers are knotty in some respects; this causes some people to circumvent them. The major quandary with in-wall speakers is their installation. Since in-wall speakers are fixed inside walls, you have to take sections of your wall apart. This will require a lot of expertise. No wonder many people shun these speakers.

Another disadvantage is the fact that if something went wrong with the speakers. This would then necessitate removing them. The entire process may result in you re-arranging your furniture because the speakers could be located next to major office furniture.

However, all said, in-wall furniture are the latest trend especially in offices, so you can expect to see more and more offices sporting them in the coming days. These in-wall speakers are easily available at all home theater shops and electronics stores. In fact any store that supplies electronic goods will also have a collection of in-wall speakers. Another place where you can buy in-wall speakers is on the internet; many people buy these speakers online at ubid.com, e-bay.com and others. Buying online gives you the opportunity to read product reviews and perform price comparisons, so it is more advantageous than routine shopping which doesn't allow these prospects. - 16477

Your Guide to Custom Home Theaters.

By Owen Jones

Watching films is a fantastic way to escape from the stressful life we all live these days. Watching movies on a wide screen system with surround sound can take you far away from that stress and into the film you are watching. You allows you to experience the plot it as if you were actually there in the movie itself.

Until recently, we could only experience this escapism in a cinema. However, modern technology is able to provide the same visual and sound experience right in your own living room. We will discuss the basic components of a home theater system in this article. Read on to understand how these basic components can deliver the best cinematic experience in a custom home theater system.

Home theater experts state that the most important consideration in setting up a custom home theater system is the size of the room where you will set up the home theater system. The most important component of your custom home theater system, which is the television, is dependent on the size of the room, although the recommendation is that a 27 inch television set is the minimum necessary for your home theater set up.

It is also recommended that a flat screen television be used for a home theater system because it shows minimum glare and produces a crisper image. Another major component in any custom home theater system also dependent on the size of the room, is the speaker system.

The number of speakers for your custom home theater system is dependent on the size of the room. You need at least three speakers to create surround sound, but you may place up to six speakers, if you want a more lifelike sound. Adding a subwoofer may also be a good way to achieve a complete surround sound like in the movie theaters. Three speakers is the minimum, although you may need up to six if the room is big.

Another major piece of equipment for your custom home theater system is the digital DVD player. It is a recommendation that DVD players with a progressive scan are the best choice. This is because the progressive scan creates sharp, flicker-free pictures. However, this points back to the choice of television unit; you may need to check that your flat-screen television set supports progressive scan signals. You may also want to get a five-disk carrousel DVD player. This will stop you having to get up from your chair to change discs quite so often.

A minor consideration is the power of the DVD player as that will determine how loud your loudspeakers can be turned up. Of course, almost all this depends on the size of the room in which the custom home theater system is going to be installed. Small rooms only need a few pieces of equipment, bigger rooms probably call for more and adding some proprietary home theater furniture to your home theater system will make a big difference. A bigger room therefore needs a larger investment. A smaller room might require less, but still high quality, equipment to prevent your home theater set-up under-performing and feeling 'cheap'.

You might think about hiring a home theater expert to design a perfect, custom home theater system. If you can afford it, this is probably the best option, because a home theater expert will be able to design and set up your custom home theater system most efficiently.

Your custom home theater designer may also recommend installing some additional features like specialized home theater seating and even other home theater furniture, such as small tables in order to make your home theater package complete and thereby make it more closely resemble a real movie theater. Having the finest and highest-quality custom home theater system will give you a most sought after set up, one that you can be proud of and that will enable you to enjoy your movies to the max. - 16477

Vacuum Bag Buying And Maintenance

Vacuum cleaners are an ordinary sight in every household. There is hardly anyone in the country that does not have one. More so, there is hardly any person in the world who has not seen, touched or heard about the vacuum cleaner. Simply put, it is very widely known.

Since the early 19th century, the vacuum bag cleaner has been helping homes and offices improve their lives of many by lessening their overall household and office chores. This is more felt among caretakers and housewives around the world. This is because in the past, a lot of bending was required in order to clean floors. This would eventually lead to back injury. But this is no longer the case with the advent of vacuum cleaners. While the old-fashioned sweeping could not guarantee that the floor or carpet would be clean, vacuums could do the job with less effort and achieve greater results.

The mechanism involved in the working of vacuum cleaners is essentially a sucking system located on frontal lower end of the device. This eliminates the process of cleaning repeatedly in order for a floor or carpet to be clean. Dusting carpets and sweeping floors can now be easily done in one fell swoop quite unlike using a broom.

Technology has seen newer innovations in the vacuum cleaner. This is in the bag-less cleaner which does not have the traditional bad attached to it. Its proponents insist it is much more convenient because there is no need to constantly detach the bag to throw away its dirty contents. But despite of these innovations, the cleaner with the vacuum bag is still immensely popular. We do agree that there is an inconvenience attached to constantly having to remove the vacuum bags from time to time but these still perform well and are well liked by many.

There is also no shortage of vacuum cleaners in department stores such as Wall-mart or Target. Even Home Depot sells vacuum bags. If you can't find one in your nearest department store, you can check for them in the internet.

Searching on the Internet involves a simple keyword search for the words "vacuum bag". This will definitely pull many results you can browse. They can also be cheaper than those in stores.

EBay is also another place you can begin your search. This large auction site provides the buyer with added security since they use third party escrow companies which ensure that there is minimal fraud online.

Be sure to read the manual that comes with the cleaner in order to maintain it well. This ensures that the cleaner lasts longer and continues to perform at its best. The manual also contains phone numbers to maintenance and those to call in case you have a question regarding your warranty. - 16477

Non-Blooming Large Blue Hydrangea

By Thomas Fryd

Question: Would you recommend a good mulch for azaleas and camellias one that will hold moisture, aid in aeration, promote growth and keep the soil acid? Texas.

A mixture of sawdust, or better still, shavings from the planing mill and rotted barnyard manure using about equal parts of each makes an ideal mulch for azaleas and camellias. For appearances a coating of peat moss might be put over this mulch to change it from an almost white color to a dark brown.

Question: Our land is heavy clay. What can I do, or what kind of soil could I mix with this clay to get better results from my gardening? Michigan.

Heavy clay soil is excellent soil but the soil particles are so small they tend to run together and make the ground very hard to work. To improve clay for gardening, first spade or till the ground in the late fall or early spring, as deep as possible. Leave it rough for a time so that freezing and thawing can break it down.

Be careful not to work a clay soil when it is wet. Add all the organic matter to it you can obtain. Rotted manure, rotted leaves, and any fall cover crops that can be spaded under will help. Finally a dressing of limestone, or of hydrated lime, will help flocculate the clay and make it more easily crumbled. Use enough lime to make the surface white and apply it any time now. It can be worked into the soil as spring gardening progresses.

Question: Can you tell me which of the evergreen winter-hardy succulents will survive the heat of Texas summers? Texas.

Most water storing succulents come from regions of intense summer heat and will withstand the heat of Texas summers, but most of them will not stand frost. A few will, such as certain sedums, some sempervivums and a few cacti. The drougth resistant succulents usually have coarse leathery leaves and in general are winter hardy. The yucca. agave, aloe and senecio are examples. However, many of these will not stand a heavy freeze.

Question: What can we do to grow a strip of lawn on the north side of our house between the house and a large maple? It does well in the spring; fades out in the summer. Indiana.

Grasses are light demanding and like-wise cannot exist if robbed of water and plant food by shallow rooted trees. To overcome the deficiency of light on the north use a mixture of Poa trivialis (one of the bluegrass family), fescue, and Canadian bluegrass. Have a deeply prepared seed bed containing adequate humus and plant food. The seed bed should be at least six inches deep and the plant food should be commercial fertilizer with about a 4-8-4 analysis and spread at the rate of 35 pounds per 100 square feet. Seed should be sown as early as possible, at least by the last of March. During summer the soil must be watered regularly for the tree pulls the water content of the soil down too low for grass to exist. In September thicken up the lawn by sowing additional seed consisting of the same grass mixture. .

Question: My two large blue hydrangeas refuse to bloom. In eight years I have had two blooms. The blue hydrangea bushes grow large with healthy leaves. I cut off the old branches every year and the new growth grows about two feet high. Ive tried several fertilizers with no success perhaps you can help me. Ohio.

While your blue hydrangeas are growing large with healthy green leaves, they are also growing bloom buds at the end of each cane. By fall these buds are mature, and at frost time are large, pointed, terminal buds. If they are not killed by the rigors of winter and if they are not pruned away they will expand into large blooms the following spring. Dont prune away any live wood until just after the blooming period. Then prune the plant back hard so new canes may develop and produce bloom buds for next year. - 16477

Are Wireless Speakers Replacing Convenctional Speakers?

By William Warlord

Many consumer electronics music market becoming more and more dynamic and mobile. That is why many manufacturers have shifted into wireless gadgets which cater to an increasingly mobile market. From cell phones to IPods, people feel the need to break free from their mundane everyday toys which tie them to one place.

People now want to go wireless in most electronic gadgets. Traditionally, music speakers have been more or less stationery and attached to the main musical tuner via a spaghetti mesh of cables. This has been a major inconvenience especially to those that want to be mobile.

As we are all aware, this arrangement has its inherent dangers. Children playing with these wires can unplug them and interrupt the sound. This is not to mention the danger of tripping and falling on the wires. Convectional speakers with the crisscrossing wires are also unsightly and do not contribute to good interior dйcor of the room.

There has also been instances where the wiring and cables from electronic gadgets such as speakers have contributing to fires. This has led music equipment manufacturers to seek altenatives. The answer to all this is wireless speakers.

Wireless speakers are gaining in popularity. They are small, attractive and because of their lack of wiring running from the musical unit to the speakers. Electronic manufacturers that make wireless speakers cater to the exotic market that is interested in diminutive size without sacrificing the quality of the sound and this is perfectly the case with wireless speakers.

Wireless speakers use the technology that transmits radio waves in the form of analogue sound waves. It is then decoded to digital signals and finally converted into sound by a device located in the speakers. All this is done at the same instant.

A great advantage with wireless speakers is that the sound can actually be transmitted even through walls. This means that the speakers do not have to be physically located where the musical device is located. This reduces the chances of damaging the tuner or musical receiver.

So the conclusion is: if you want to enjoy go for surround sound technology with a nice warm bath or wash. There is no risk of water damage involved. If you are looking for maximum sound effect at different corners of the room or house, then it is sure to be nothing but a Wireless speaker. - 16477

How To Make Your Garden Better

By Kent Higgins

Seven Steps to a Better Garden This Year

Would you like to have a better garden than you had last year, with less effort on your part? The answer, of course, is an emphatic "yes," so here are a few suggestions.

Basically the formula is simple, namely, to do now everything you possibly can to save yourself later on - steps, time, worry and lost opportunities.

Even simple formulas dont work unless you do something about them. lets get this one started right by working out a step-by-step plan and then following it through.

Order early

In all probability you will want some new flowers, shrubs, and trees, and probably grass seed, with which to improve your garden at planting time. Send right now for a number of catalogs or visit their websites covering the items in which you are especially interested - not only plant materials but insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and garden tools.

Consider power equipment, if possible, as it is a great time and labor saver. A few minutes invested will bring you a wealth of information about all of these things. By being an early bird you will find out about a new flower, shrub or garden implement before you see it in a neighbors garden or hear about it at your garden club.

With the new catalogs or "dream books" before you, plan your garden and make your order. Some things, such as seeds of flowers and vegetables to be started indoors or in a coldframe, you may need almost immediately, while some things can wait if necessary.

Gardeners living in the South will be planting when Northerners are merely thinking about it. Early orders are usually filled with the varieties you specify without substitutions due to depleted stocks. No need to worry about receiving plants too soon. They are shipped at the proper time for planting in your area. Shipment of items such as new tools and insecticides can be deferred until later but it is well to make your orders now, ready to start the garden as the time approaches when you will need them.

Look to Labels

Procure labels early in a sufficient supply to mark the things you plant. Plastic labels are good for annuals and vegetables. In all probability you will regret it later on if you do not have permanent labels for trees, shrubs, roses and perennials. Easily read, long-lasting labels add much to the pleasure of gardening and are a good place to record planting dates and other pertinent information.

When labels are on hand early they can be properly inscribed and placed with the seeds or plants in advance of the rush at planting time. We find it very helpful for instance, to separate vegetable and flower seeds into groups: those to be started indoors, outdoors early (hardy), outdoors late (tender) and so on, each variety with its prepared label and each group placed in a small box. As the different planting seasons arrive, everything is ready for immediate action.

Plans Come First

The preparation of planting plans is another great time saver that much too often is neglected. Many beginners - just the folks who most need them hesitate to attempt making planting plans, because they feel it is a complicated task requiring expert knowledge. Of course its true that an expert may do the job better and in shorter time. But that applies to any DIY job you can think of so dont hesitate to start. The worst possible planting plan is better than none at all.

The mechanics of making such a plan are not as complicated as you may think. At any office supply store pick up a pad of cross-ruled paper, which simplifies drawing to scale.

On the master plan you can put down, to scale, such things as the boundary lines of the property; the location and dimensions of the house and any other buildings; drives and walks; and such fixed objects as existing trees, large rocks or other "permanent fixtures.

Then you can sketch in location of the hedges, lawn areas, flower borders, vegetable patch, rose garden or any other special plantings you have or would like to have.

Also locate trees and shrubs which you plan to purchase, keeping in mind the ultimate size they are likely to attain. A good book on how to plan the home grounds will help with this task. Your plan will not only tell you what to order but, when planting time arrives, you will know exactly where each plant is to go.

This will save you many minutes, if not hours, in family discussions about "where shall we put it?"

If extensive planting is to be done, more detailed plans may be made for special areas such as the shrub border, perennial border, rose garden or rock garden. You can take my word for it: no other investment of time and there is no expense involved will do so much to give you a place that you will be proud of and happy in.

Little Frame a Big Help

For actually getting the garden off to a flying start when weather permits, I know of nothing that will prove more helpful than a small coldframe. It is always a marvel to me that so many eager-beaver beginners wait for years before taking advantage of the great help that even a very small frame can be in getting planting under way.

Consider also the pleasures to be had in operating a frame while most other garden operations must be held hostage by weather pending the fickle vagaries of spring. A frame as small as 4 by 6 feet, placed in some sheltered, sunny spot - such as on the south side of the garage, fence or hedge will enable you to start scores of seedling annuals and vegetables.

It is also possible to grow a few extra-early lettuces, onions and radishes to maturity. Later use it for starting perennials, rooting cuttings and protecting semi-hardy plants, such as the large-flowered chrysanthemums, over winter.

Of course you cant build a frame while the ground is frozen solid, but you can get all the parts ready so that when the time arrives it can be put in place in a matter of an hour or two.

In many sections of the country, where the soil seldom freezes more than 2 or 3 inches deep, a frame may readily be put in at any time. A frame may be bought ready-made at a moderate price or you can build it yourself.

Convenient dimensions are 6 or 8 feet long; 4 feet wide (to the outide of the boards); 18 inches high (above the soil inside the frame) at the back, and 12 inches at the front. The frame may be partially buried so that the front boards are only 4 to 6 inches above the ground. This helps keep out frost. Wood should be treated, which prevents decay. "Standard" sash from lumber yards are 6 by 3 feet, but these are heavy and unwieldy; sash 4 by 2 feet are available and better suited for home garden use. For a very light and inexpensive sash polyethylene plastic is satisfactory but not as durable as glass.

A Workbench Assists

Another mid-winter job which will pay big dividends later on is to provide yourself with a workbench that can be used for keeping all gardening tools sharp and in good repair. Any tool employed in working the soil such as hoes, shovels of various types, trowels even a pickax will get dull, just as do grass cutting tools of all types and pruning shears.

Even the weedeater needs to be cleaned up to "cut better." Furnish a workbench with wrenches, emery wheel, coarse and fine sharpening stones and medium-weight machine oil. With all these items assembled together you will be encouraged to keep all gear in tip-top working condition.

Peg-Board Helps

"Where did I leave those shears?" How often have you asked yourself that question and lost precious minutes in trying to locate them? The peg-board is one of the greatest assists to the gardener that ever came along.

With one nailed up on your garage wall you can readily have a definite place for each of your small garden tools, and whats more, you will find yourself automatically putting them away where they belong. An outline of the tool, marked on the board, immediately shows anything missing.

When Should it Be Done

Just like your garden lights heres something else that should have a place on that peg board in a gilded frame - a date book. Most families at this time of year are flooded with advertising calendars some with dates ruled off in big squares for memoranda. Take one of these and mark down on it the approximate dates for various important garden operations including mowing, fertilizing, and addition of low voltage garden lights. For instance

March 1 start indoors, hardy annuals and flower seeds

March 15-make first planting in frames, sow sweet peas, prune roses;

April 1 plant hardy annual and first vegetable seeds in open, fertilize daffodils and tulips.

Of course these dates will vary in different sections of the country; and often they will not work out there may be a late blizzard when sweet peas should go in the ground. But they do serve as reminders and as a guide to show whats coming up; and they will prevent your overlooking, or being unduly late with, many important garden operations.

Perhaps you cannot accomplish, especially the first year, all of the things suggested here. But the nearer you can come to it the better your garden will be. The ideas are all practical and most involve little or no expense. You will soon find that a running start will get you further faster and with the least effort. - 16477

Which Gets Packed First, the Frying Pan or the Egg?

By Affordable Storage Guy

Where and how you start your packing depends on many factors, including how much time you have, what your needs and priorities are, and how organized you are in general. Spending some time exploring these factors before you start packing can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and make your move more streamlined and less stressful.

Your first step should be to clear out anything you don't plan to take with you. This will help make organizing easier and faster, and prevent you from wasting time and packing materials on items you don't want to keep. Careful planning at this stage will save a lot of time and headaches later.

Depending on your personal style, you can either go through your house room by room, separating essentials from nonessentials before starting to pack, or you can tackle one room at a time, packing up what you don't need, and removing necessary items to a central location. China, photographs, off-season bedding and clothing, holiday decorations and entertainment items are all things that can be packed first.

If you're packing up a home office, you'll have to give careful thought to which items you need for your daily business operations and which can be safely packed away. Keep in mind that it may be weeks before you're fully unpacked, so plan ahead and label everything wisely.

Decide how you want to handle perishable items in advance. Will you be able to eat everything in the freezer before you leave, or do you have friends or neighbors you can give some of the food to? Will you be keeping your houseplants? If you're not moving very far away, do you have someone who could look after them until you're settled?

Give each family member an overnight bag to keep their daily necessities in until moving day. Make sure that toothbrushes, eyeglasses, prescription medications, cosmetics and anything else used on a daily basis goes back into the bag after each use, to keep things organized and on schedule.

On your last day, place any used clothing, bedding and towels in large sealable plastic bags. Consider takeout for your final meal, so you can have your kitchen already completely packed. Get rid of any trash, make one last walkthrough to look for stray items, gather up your overnight bags and you're ready to go. - 16477

Serious Garden Planning

By Steven Karback

north February

February also is the month to do some serious planning of the garden for the coming season instead of waiting until you have the seeds or plants in hand ready to be planted in spring. This is an ideal time to consider all the possibilities, color combinations, sizes and textures, space requirements and all the important details that will make a garden more than a mere collection of plants.

Garden planning should be done on paper after a list of the plants you prefer has been compiled. Quadruled paper which may be secured from office supply stores or artists supply shops is a great aid in making planning on paper easy because the lines give you an exact scale with which to work, use the eight or ten scale ruled paper.

Give an index or key number or letter for each of the plants you want to grow. Then on the basis of their size and form, color and texture of both foliage and flowers, develop a plan on the paper.

You will be amazed at how simple planning can be and how superior results are over the hit-or-miss, spur of the moment type of planning which is so commonly done a few minutes before planting.

Study the aesthetic qualities of the plants of your choice and use these qualities the way an artist uses pigments, pencil and brush in drawings and paintings. After all, a garden is a living picture and should consist of plants that produce an interesting, exciting and beautiful effect.

There should be harmony in the colors, textures and the forms of plants. The plan also will give you a more accurate estimate of the number of plants needed. Proper spacing can be determined on paper, then reproduced in the garden bed at planting time.

Planning before planting will offset the natural tendency to crowd plants. The plan will give a more realistic impression in this respect. You will know that only so many plants are needed, therefore surpluses will not be obtained with the attending temptation to use them even though it is known that the plants are being crowded in the bed.

When garden plans are completed and an inventory of tools, equipment and sup- plies has been made, the next important step in preparation and garden planning for the gardening season is to go on a shopping tour of your favorite seed and garden supply stores. Dont wait until the actual gardening season starts, as do so many, but do your shopping now.

Dont waste those precious early spring hours in buying seeds and supplies when you can use that time in your garden. Garden stores now are stocked with everything and anything you need.

This may not be the case if you postpone making purchases too late in the spring. Also the clerks will have more time to serve you, to give you ideas, to chat with you about new developments, new chemicals, new tools.

There will be time to discuss fertilizers, soil conditioners, new varieties of plants. Later on when the spring rush is on there will not be time for pleasant and profitable discussions concerning plants, their characteristics, their culture. - 16477

Sony BRAVIA KDL-52W4100

By Dave Anderson

I purchased this TV in the late 2008 and have found it to be an a really great buy.

A couple reviews said that the TV has issues while the black shades are varying. I looked at this in the store with great details and have used it for a month and I have't noticed that at all. This is a extremely sharp TV with superior colors and deep black tones. This LCD TV is a lot better than the previous TV W model.

Here is why you should get this LCD TV. It has a very perfect image in digital broadcast and does a flawless job in SD transmission better than some other tv sets I have seen. For that it's respossible a great technology from Sony named DSP which is essentially noise reduction technology. Sony of course knows Blu-ray because they invented it, they know what color tones should look like I mean they hold a movie studio, the tv menus are actually simple to use, it has its own TV guide and it has capability for future expansion.

Picture quality is pretty near Samsung in HD. I looked at both TVs side by side. Samsung has a slight edge on clarity in SD. Samsung is more shiny, Sony is a matte cover but darks on Samsung are pretty good because of the glossy screen. While testing with a Blu-ray disc,Sony has a bit more details. No fade from white to dark problems on Sony as some reviews has mentioned. Colors are pleasant and bright as Sony Bravia two engine is outstanding, maybe even better than XBR engine.I've found that the Z series may be better but there isn't 52 inche models

Tv menus on Samsung televisons are created for experts with a lots of tweeks, but really it's clouded for average user. If you doubt that, get the user manual for the Samsung LN52A650 and for Sony KDL524100 and check for yourself. If you are technical person, then buy LN52A650. If you don't like to mess around, but get an superior image, take the Sony. Ths Sony TV is truly simple to use, but also it automatically finds digital channels and is like you get also a built in cable box.

The Sony television may not have the Ethernet connector and built in weather like the series 6 from Samsung, but it does have the built in TV guide and future expansion. But, if you want internet in your TV, you are better to be connected through external device. The TV guide option in this tv set is great and the Sony Bravia Sync is a big plus specially if you use a Sony DVD converter for 1080p. Picture in Picture technology is super as well because it's allowing you to watch picture from HDMI and at the same time watch cable TV.

For me preferred thing on Sony KDL52W4100 is the on/off button on the top side as this is keeping children from turning off televison. Also a good thing is the remote on the Sony as it is really simple to operate.

In the end, if you want the a super clear picture, simple to use LCD TV with features that makes standard television watching fulfilling and simple. This Sony KDL52W4100 is excellent selection. - 16477

How To Create Your Own Garden Ornaments

By Steven Karback

When our search for garden ornaments began, we discovered they fell into two categories: fat plaster ducks and crouching dwarfs, or marble fountains and pieces of statuary with high price tags.

The first group didnt appeal, the second was far too expensive. It was a case of getting along without ornaments or joining the "do it yourselves" we chose the latter.

Our first effort was a table made from a large tree stump and a piece of flagstone. The stump was cut off at ground level and placed under a tree, then the flagstone was cemented to its top. It proved to be a "conversation piece" when friends gathered around it during the hot summer evenings and doubles as a bird feeder all winter.

Later on two big wagon wheels came our way via a farm auction. These were set upright between rose beds and an old-fashioned rose planted in front of each. If you try this, dont use climbers, in less than two years they will be a tangled mass with nowhere to go but out on the lawn and the wheels will be invisible.

In the center of the garden we made a round bed for about eight bushes and some ground covers where we "feature" plants off and on. I think now planting some more permanent ground covers would have been a better choice, something with a more continuous and abundant bloom.

A heavy piece of driftwood was set upright in the middle of the bed and a sundial screwed to its top. Several years ago sundials were advertised in quite a few magazines. I havent noticed any for sale lately and its too bad, every garden should have one.

When father made a "wishing well," using weathered boards for the base and old shakes for the top for a non profit group he once belonged to. It was carefully hauled to their BBQ's and events like that, and set up near the entrance with a note tacked to its side asking visitors to "drop a coin and make a wish."

The resulting nickels, dimes and quarters, went into the organization's treasury. Two years was all the wishing well could take, so its sagging top was straightened, loose boards nailed back in place and it now stands proudly in his old-fashioned garden.

A birdbath was put close enough to a crepe myrtle bush/tree. The birds flock to the area all summer long. I think they feel sheltered and protected by the tree. Birdbaths can be purchased very reasonably at most garden centers and big box stores. - 16477

The Inspiring Power Of Roses

By Keith Markensen

Two kinds of people use the stars. The first romanticize their beauty and dream by them, the second use them to steer their course by. It is much the same with roses. There is much to be done in this world to beautify both the garden and spirit of our fellow man with roses.

We can devote our time to simple enjoyment of the joys we have found in roses or we can set about the vitally important task of bringing this pleasure to more people. With a new year unfolding before us we might well take stock and see which path we have followed in the past and if we are willing to enrich the lives of our fellow men by following the second course.

If we find the challenge of the latter course inspiring there is one factor which will help greatly in gaining successful results. That is the importance of retaining an affirmative attitude. I used to hate the fact that my garden soil is full of rocks until I found these came in mighty handy when I issued forth with my trusty sling-shot to ward off the innumerable rabbits which plagued our new rose plants.

The soil is still rocky but I have rearranged the rocks considerably and at the same time have made life miserable for the rabbits if not decimating their population. We cannot overcome all the obstacles in our way, but we can sometimes make these obstacles stepping stones to success, whether it be in our personal lives or our rose society.

We cannot hope to instill in others an enthusiasm for new desert roses if we do not manifest what roses such as adenium ice pink have done for us. I am reminded of the farmer who was possessed of a pessimistic attitude. When a neighbor commented on the fine stand of grain he had in his fields he protested that while it was a bountiful crop it would probably be ruined by rain before he could harvest it.

Later, after the crop had been successfully harvested and a good profit realized, the neighbor complimented the farmer on his good for- tune. "Well," he sighed, "it was a good season right enough, but a crop like that sure takes a lot out of the soil." Lets start the year out realizing we have accomplished only part of what we hope to do in our rose garden and landscape, that there will be disappointments and some failures before this year is over but we can accomplish much for both ourselves and for our plants and home if we tackle the job ahead with optimism. - 16477

Laura Ashley Fabric now available in the Garden

By John Duff

Laura Ashley has moved into the garden. There has never been a more perfect marriage, the beauty of high quality garden furniture combined with classic timeless Laura Ashley fabric design.

The stand out product in the range of Laura Ashley Garden Furniture is the Sandbanks deckchair. The frame is manufactured in the hardwood Balau and is carefully crafted to a high specification with some modern design improvements to the traditional original Edwardian deckchair.

The problem with deckchairs, altering the position, has been made simple and efficient with a foot operated click lock mechanism. With this innovation, you can enjoy any of the 3 positions without difficulty. Deckchairs are no longer something to be approached with trepidation!

The deckchair also comes with an adjustable sunshade which can be moved vertically to protect the skin from sun damage. The canopy mirrors the seatpad in terms of fabric design with the delightful Laura Ashley "Lloyd" fabric and its reverse, "Biscuit", perfectly complimenting each other.

The foot rest is easily removable and has a folding base support leg. It is a delightful and inexpensive classic piece of designer garden furniture.

With all the talk of destruction of the rainforests, it is nice to see Laura Ashley take their environmental responsibilities extremely seriously "all teak used in Laura Ashley garden furniture is Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified."

It is vital that all teak used in Garden Furniture - about 20 times less than that used in the marine decking industry - comes for sustainable well managed plantations.

Because the FSC is an independent organisation, it is free from influence of governments, forestry owners and producers, unlike some other notable schemes (Perum Perhutani is run by the Indonesian Government and the Tropical Forestry Trust has B and Q as a founding member).

The FSC organisation not only ensures that all the teak certified comes from managed environmentally sustainable plantations, but also that the workers in those plantations have access to proper healthcare, education and safety equipment.

Moreover, FSC certification eliminates the possibility of a government using the natural resources of a country for financial gain without care for the environment. Burma (Myanmar) is rich in teak but has no FSC certificates. Teak from Burma is ravaging the rainforests and destroying the natural environment.

In fact John of Garden Furniture Scotland Ltd knows of only 2 countries in the world which have teak that satisfies the FSCs stringent requirements for certification. Good quality teak heart wood is the best wood for garden furniture bar none due to its high oleoresin content, which acts as a natural preservative. Be very wary of teak with light and dark areas in the same piece of timber as this is young, immature teak which has a tendency to warp.

Mature teak is used to manufacture the Laura Ashley Garden Furniture Chelsea Set which is a solid 6 seater set. This is stocked by Garden Furniture Scotland, Ltd, one of the only distributers in the UK to have this range.

This luxury 6 seater dining set, which consists of an extending teak table and 6 teak folding armchairs, has two extension leafs either side of the central spar. This means that the parasol can be used whether the table is at its smallest, 132cm, or at its longest, 180cm. In addition, the auto glide mechanism means extending the table is simple and easy.

The Laura Ashley Chelsea chairs have arms and fold flat for ease of movement and storage. Whilst this is great, the Chelsea Set really comes to life when one adds the Laura Ashley Lloyd design reversible seat pads, black with biscuit coloured design on one side, biscuit colour with black pattern on the other. The fabric colour against the natural tint of the teak just looks stunning.

The double skinned, teak stemmed parasol compliments the table and chairs perfectly. This parasol is crafted from FSC teak, so like the table and chairs is contributing to protecting the environment. The double skin of the canopy is a layer of Lloyd, backed by a layer of Biscuit. the two together create a beautiful dappled effect upon looking up into the underside. It is a unique look and one which is not to be missed.

There are many other designs in the Laura Ashley Garden Furniture range, including traditional garden benches, to very modern aluminium and glass designs, all with Laura Ashley design and quality built in. - 16477
