How To Combine Suncatchers With Windchimes!...

By Anna Meenaghan

Suncatchers and windchimes, I think, are always an effective item. Generally they can be produced quite easily from items that you already own. So what I am about to suggest making, is done using old compact discs.

This sounds simple enough, so how can I start? And with what? Some CD's, scissors, adhesive, bells and whatever you would like to use to hang this on. Twine, a very thin ribbon, string, cord, there are so many colour choices available now in local craft stores.

So let us try. Firstly, assuming that you have some nice and really bright colourful CD's, let's try with four to start with. Take the glue and stick two together with the labels on the inside. Now repeat this with the other two. I only say use coloured discs so that the end product will be more effective.

Obviously you will be able to adapt this in size to suit your basic requirements. Now, with a narrow coloured string, or even ribbon or cord, cut about thirty six inches. What you will do next, is to thread one end of the cord, say through the middle of one of your CDs, so that you have an even amount of the cord on both sides and knot it firmly at the outer edge of the CD.

Your second CD now needs to be added to this so that it will end up on top of the first one. To do this, one string has to go through the middle of the CD and be joined with the other string and knotted at the outside edge again and then knot again.

How about adding some bells to these now? You might be able to buy some coloured bells, but if you can only get the silver ones, I would find myself tempted to paint these different colours with an acrylic metallic paint, particularly if you are using coloured CD's. The more hectic the look, the better. Keeping your strings together, thread a bell through, and this will be just at the top of your two CD's, fix this, and then another two inches up, add one more.

The bells themselves can be tied on, or knotted, and you don't necessarily have to do them with the thread double. It would also be possible to hang these on both ribbons and space them in different places. Basically, how many bells you want to use and where, is entirely up to you. If you use more bells, you may need more ribbon for when you tie it at the top.

You may now decide you would like something at the bottom of your CD's. So, how about adding two or three strings of coloured glass beads, or mix them with your bells, so that the beads will chink together. These would still help to catch the light.

This would work similarly with silver CD's, but there is nothing to stop you spraying these with other colours. Crystal beads would work well with silver CD's.

This would hang well from a tree! - 16477
