Laura Ashley Fabric now available in the Garden

By John Duff

Laura Ashley has moved into the garden. There has never been a more perfect marriage, the beauty of high quality garden furniture combined with classic timeless Laura Ashley fabric design.

The stand out product in the range of Laura Ashley Garden Furniture is the Sandbanks deckchair. The frame is manufactured in the hardwood Balau and is carefully crafted to a high specification with some modern design improvements to the traditional original Edwardian deckchair.

The problem with deckchairs, altering the position, has been made simple and efficient with a foot operated click lock mechanism. With this innovation, you can enjoy any of the 3 positions without difficulty. Deckchairs are no longer something to be approached with trepidation!

The deckchair also comes with an adjustable sunshade which can be moved vertically to protect the skin from sun damage. The canopy mirrors the seatpad in terms of fabric design with the delightful Laura Ashley "Lloyd" fabric and its reverse, "Biscuit", perfectly complimenting each other.

The foot rest is easily removable and has a folding base support leg. It is a delightful and inexpensive classic piece of designer garden furniture.

With all the talk of destruction of the rainforests, it is nice to see Laura Ashley take their environmental responsibilities extremely seriously "all teak used in Laura Ashley garden furniture is Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified."

It is vital that all teak used in Garden Furniture - about 20 times less than that used in the marine decking industry - comes for sustainable well managed plantations.

Because the FSC is an independent organisation, it is free from influence of governments, forestry owners and producers, unlike some other notable schemes (Perum Perhutani is run by the Indonesian Government and the Tropical Forestry Trust has B and Q as a founding member).

The FSC organisation not only ensures that all the teak certified comes from managed environmentally sustainable plantations, but also that the workers in those plantations have access to proper healthcare, education and safety equipment.

Moreover, FSC certification eliminates the possibility of a government using the natural resources of a country for financial gain without care for the environment. Burma (Myanmar) is rich in teak but has no FSC certificates. Teak from Burma is ravaging the rainforests and destroying the natural environment.

In fact John of Garden Furniture Scotland Ltd knows of only 2 countries in the world which have teak that satisfies the FSCs stringent requirements for certification. Good quality teak heart wood is the best wood for garden furniture bar none due to its high oleoresin content, which acts as a natural preservative. Be very wary of teak with light and dark areas in the same piece of timber as this is young, immature teak which has a tendency to warp.

Mature teak is used to manufacture the Laura Ashley Garden Furniture Chelsea Set which is a solid 6 seater set. This is stocked by Garden Furniture Scotland, Ltd, one of the only distributers in the UK to have this range.

This luxury 6 seater dining set, which consists of an extending teak table and 6 teak folding armchairs, has two extension leafs either side of the central spar. This means that the parasol can be used whether the table is at its smallest, 132cm, or at its longest, 180cm. In addition, the auto glide mechanism means extending the table is simple and easy.

The Laura Ashley Chelsea chairs have arms and fold flat for ease of movement and storage. Whilst this is great, the Chelsea Set really comes to life when one adds the Laura Ashley Lloyd design reversible seat pads, black with biscuit coloured design on one side, biscuit colour with black pattern on the other. The fabric colour against the natural tint of the teak just looks stunning.

The double skinned, teak stemmed parasol compliments the table and chairs perfectly. This parasol is crafted from FSC teak, so like the table and chairs is contributing to protecting the environment. The double skin of the canopy is a layer of Lloyd, backed by a layer of Biscuit. the two together create a beautiful dappled effect upon looking up into the underside. It is a unique look and one which is not to be missed.

There are many other designs in the Laura Ashley Garden Furniture range, including traditional garden benches, to very modern aluminium and glass designs, all with Laura Ashley design and quality built in. - 16477
