Woodworking Tips - Fix Broken Wood Screws & Stripped Heads

By Ryan Henders

There is one of many major mistakes that novice and/or impatient do it your selfer's make. That's forgetting to make the hole for the screw. Cutting corners time wise can lead to a whole lot more work. Fortunately, in this circumstance though this is fixable.

If you are putting your screws, into something like softwood and you are using drywall or decking screws, which you can sometimes get away with, but if they break then you are going to have a problem on your hands. If you are not really adept at using an electric drill to insert your screws, you need to be careful at what you are doing. For example if you just happen to angle that drill a little to the side the wrong way then you will most likely strip the head of the screw. So now what? Well there is a solution.

If you are having a good day and this happens hopefully, it?s above the surface that you were screwing into. Then it is easily enough rectified by using a pair or vice grips to grab the end of the screw and wind it out of the hold. If on the other hand it has broken beneath the surface chances are you would be better to just leave it there. Patch over the hole and start a new hole in a fresh spot.

If you have no choice but to remove the screw then there are few things you can do. If you have done this in the past then you may have discovered after you went to great lengths to fix it that you can actually buy a broken screw extractor at the hardware store just for this reason. Let?s face it there really isn?t much you can?t buy nowadays is there. This handy little gadget is just a little metal tube that teeth have been cut out of in one end. You just have to attach the extractor into the drill. Then what it will do is take a core sample from around the broken screw.

Then you glue a wood dowel into place and simple put in a new screw over the repair.

Perhaps if you really haven?t got the time or energy to run out to the hardware store for an extractor then you can do the repair the old-fashioned way. Just cut around the screw until you are able to grab the head of it with a pair of pliers. Then one you have removed the broken screw you need to repair the damage you created when digging it out. Just drill this area out and insert a plug according to the size of the hole.

If it?s a hinge screw that broke then you can simply epoxy the head into the hole.

In the end, though the best fix is the preventative one. Learn how to drill and insert your screws correctly and take your time. You will find in the end that you have saved yourself a whole of time by not having to do the repairs. - 16477

GE, Water Filter Desalination Plants Bringing Life To The World.

By Zachus J Winstone

It is a widely known fact that over 1.5 billion people in this modern world are still suffering from lack of access of clean drinking water. United Nations survey has reported that millions of people are dying everyday from thirst and consumption of polluted water. So what can we do to help? Many people have there own way of helping in their own various ways, however for an organization like GE, water filter desalination plants are being set up all over North Africa. This new initiative was set up GE Ecomagination and these desalination plants are making a huge impact on the health and well-being of millions of lives in Algiers.

Algiers which is the capital of Algeria is located between the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Sea. With a population of over 5 million inhabitants access to pure water is not a luxury for over half of them. So as part of the GE Ecomagination initiative, GE water filter desalination plants were the solution to this problem. Costing over $ 250 million US dollars this project is now supplying round the clock pure water to over 2.5 million residents of Algiers. Able to produce 200,000 cubic meters if potable water this project in having the people of north Africa new hope and life. The outlook for 2010 is also promising because GE aims to set up various sea water desalination plants that would in total exert an astounding 2.3 billion cubic meters of portable water daily.

Providing and purifying water in third world countries is great and needed but closer to home people are also in need of filtered water. Many households in the United States are now becoming aware that our very own water from taps isnt been filtered 100%. While it is arguable that water we drink is indeed certified, when examined closer people will notice that disease carrying bacteria still exist. Unlike Algeria many of our populated cities and states dont get our water purified from the sea. It is common knowledge that many cities we live in get our water from municipal sources. This means that the water we drink and bath in is water which has been recycled from waste water. This may seem slightly disgusting but the process of purification here it quite revolutionary. However, in saying this there are increasing complaints of people falling sick from drinking water from our taps at home. This is not a new issue but more and more people nowadays are feeling the need to further purify there water in homes. According to scientists and plumbers, knowing the health risks associated with contaminated water, installing water filters at home may well be a wise investment for your familys health.

Faucets filters, undersink filters, countertop filters and even whole house filters are just a few options available to ensure your family is getting the best water possible. The general duty of these water filters is to further purify water already coming from our sources. These filters have the last filtering duty of exterminating all left over bacteria and sediments that are harmful to our health. Also chemicals like chlorine, lead and fluoride are also filtered giving your water a much more refreshing taste. In some severe cases over compensation of chemicals our water can lead to cancer and other health diseases. As this is a growing threat many health practitioners are encouraging residents to but some sort of water filter for your households.

The reality here is that contaminated water is experienced both in third world countries and in developed countries but on varying degrees. Everybody deserves the best water possible whether it comes from a seawater desalination plant or a simple water filter installed at your home, after all water is a necessity to life. - 16477

How To Use Wide Panels For Woodworking

By Ryan Henders

How many times have you started a project then discovered that the wood you require is just not wide enough. Perhaps you are making a tabletop for example. Well you can actually make your own board. It's not all that time consuming or that much trouble. Basically, what you are going to be doing is simply gluing some smaller boards together to make one large piece. That's the basics but there are a few things you need to keep in mind when doing this to be successful.

All wood has some degree of movement to it. It shrinks and swells depending on what it is exposed to. In some cases, you are better ahead to use plywood.

To make your own large board you need to take the smaller boards and being sure they are perpendicular to the board facing you need to glue the edges of each board. Clamp them together tightly so they will bond.

You may want to use a power tool that will plane a smooth surface such as jointer. This is done after you have cut your boards with your power saw. If you are using a good saw blade, the cut maybe smooth enough and you won?t need to plane the edges. If you don?t have a jointer try using a router with a straight-piloted bit.

To create the illusion of it being one piece of wood arrange the colors as close as you can together and alternate the grain patterns. When it comes to choice of wood, you can use most of the hard and softwoods provided they have been kiln dried. It?s less likely to warp. Make your panel a couple of inches bigger so you can trim. Try not to use warped lumber. You can clamp it into place but it will most probably eventually weaken and bow.

The type of glue you use is important and polyurethane glue does a good job but it?s a little more difficult to work with. You don?t want it too thick although it has to be able to seep from the joint to properly bond. Check the expiration date on your glue as well. Just use enough glue to cover both the adjoining pieces. Remove the excess glue with a putty knife after it firms up.

You must clamp firmly but not over clamp because if you do you will cause the wood to bow. Place your clamps on alternating sides to help prevent this.

You want to do a dry run or layout of the boards first to see that they are going to fit properly and you are happy with the way the colors and grain work. Then you can if there is a problem with any of the edges correct these before you start with the glue.

You can use dowels if you want to reinforce the joints but it?s really not a necessity using a good glue is all you really should need. To achieve an even stronger bond cut in a glue join along the edges. - 16477

Home DIY Made Easy - Refinishing Your Cabinetry

By Ryan Henders

It is a rewarding feeling to restore an old house to a pristine condition. One of the most difficult tasks is refinishing your cabinets.

To do the job right its means you have to strip all the old product such as paint and finish off. Then you have to bleach the wood to remove either the stains that were left from the old finish or having something spilt or set on them. Then there is sanding and scraping to tend to. Finally, there is the new stain and them the finish to be done. After all,\ of this you can sit back and admire you long and enduring hard work.

Most jobs of this magnitude don?t usually go all that trouble free. You will run into at least a few minor snags, but the majority of them can be dealt with. It?s important that you know the wood that your cabinets are made from. If it?s an older house don?t be surprised to find out that there are several varieties that were used. In this case, you will never get one light stain to come out the same on all the pieces. You can however go to a deeper stain and get results that are more satisfactory.

You really may want to consider buying new doors and drawers and just keeping the original framework. When you are working with the many chemicals it would take to strip your cupboards most often, it can be too harsh on older wood. Another issue is getting the old finish totally stripped at hard to get at pieces can sometimes be impossible. Then once you even get to the point where the old cupboards are prepared for the new stain and finishes you have to take into account the several coatings you are going to have to apply and the drying time that is going to be involved. The kitchen is one of the most difficult rooms to work in because of the food preparation, grease and steam that is almost always present there.

Before you say no to the idea of buying new doors and drawers at least check out your home improvement store and see what they have to offer. At least this way you are covering all of the possible options and making an informed opinion.

If you have decided to go ahead with the original, you may want to consider at least buying new hardware. In the older cupboards quite often the door handles didn?t have a lot of character and the knobs were likely ceramic that has become cracked and chipped.

You are going to have to make decisions on what type of refinish you are going to do. This is best done after all the preparation work is done so you can see what condition the cabinets are in. This will determine if you are going to have to go with a darker stain. - 16477

Ideas for Wall Painting

By Michael James

So, here you are then, in your new house! Its a bit of a mess though because the previous owner was in a rush to sell and had been in the middle of renovating. But, you don't really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect chance to do your house up exactly the way you want it.

However, now you need to decide where everything should go and which colours would suit which rooms, but you don't have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly look through your new keys and wander through your new house. The minute you step in through a door ideas hit you. That huge urn you bought a year ago would look fantastic in the corner, and you're pretty sure that your existing sofa set will fit in this other room. And you know the antique mirror table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really get hung up on though are wall painting ideas.

You definitely don't want to just splash on a few coats of bland paint and be done with it. What you want is a masterpiece, something that you can look at with pride every time you see it. And, naturally, you should be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for quite some time to come as well, so it shouldn't be too over the top.

But where can you get some good wall painting ideas from, and how do you go about getting the wall painting done? There are a few ways that you could go about it. The easiest being if you have an artistic streak in you, then you could always get your wall painting ideas off the cuff, so to speak and paint the walls as you like. Unfortunately, most of us aren't too artistic and we are hesitant to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without any guidance. In this scenario then, you will need some help.

You could begin by hiring a professional decorator to help you decide what would look good or you could sit down and watch some DIY programs on the TV, where they show some pretty good ideas on what to do when decorating a house and will even give you some great wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is viable for you though, you could just try going down to your local hardware store with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and seek their assistance on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You may come up with a mixed bag of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I'm very proud of my slightly eclectic house. It reflects who I am just perfectly. - 16477

Do Your Yard a Favor by Using Garden Dcor and Design Elements

By Lisa Martin

When you live with an Interior Designer there is never any question about what to do on the inside of your home; they always make it look spectacular! I have also recently discovered that their design knowledge carries over to the outside as well with a couple of tweaks here in there.

A good example is the use of color. You have so many plants to choose from but you also must consider where they will be planted because of sun placement during the day. This is hardly an issue when you are dealing with the indoors!

Once you realize the differences you will need to consider, the help you may need to hire and the time it will take you from start to finish, you can then get down to business. To begin with let us look at some of the design elements you will want to consider.

One that comes to mind first is always balance. At first it would seem that balance would be whatever is on the left should also be on the right but that's not really true. Balance is achieving a flow throughout your outdoor space where no one thing that overwhelms the whole. In other words, putting up a large greenhouse in the middle of your backyard does not create balance. Having paths that go to the greenhouse along with other gardens and areas can create a wonderful balance throughout the entire space.

Think in terms of earth, wind, water and fire and the way nature uses these elements as a way to balance and flow, creating an underlying rhythm. The flow of water, the crackling of a fire, wind rustling through the trees; all are areas that help bring balance to an area and you can incorporate one or more of these types of natural elements to bring balance and flow to your yard.

This brings us to the next element of design; rhythm. Nature has natural rhythm's that you hear and see in the earth, wind, fir, water elements but you also find it in colors or plants, even in the types of grass or grasses you use in the different parts of your yard. The patterns you use in the stonework or pattern you plant with in a garden. All of these things have an impact on the rhythm of your outdoor spaces.

Another element you will want to strive to have in your yard is harmony. If you think about this in terms of nature, there is always a harmonic tone or discord that makes you look or think twice. That's because to appreciate the harmony in a place there has to be a bit of discord there so you can really hear or see that all is in harmony with each other. It's a fantastic mix and sometimes hard to find but it is always there.

The last thing is focal points of interest. Sometimes we have focal points that we wish to diminish such as a greenhouse or storage shed. In these cases, use other elements such as a grand pergola or garden seating area that draws your attention away from what you do not want to be seen to that you do want to be seen.

Everyone in your household has great ideas that should be explored and developed to see if they can be incorporated into your overall plan. To help you eliminate, design and decorate your yard it is well worth the effort to hire someone with a design background and experience. Every effort should be made to have the best outdoor spaces to match the great indoor space of your dreams. Get started today! - 16477

Country Home Decor

By Gail Jones

Your house is finally clean and tidy and you sit down and put your feet up for a minute with a nice cup of coffee by the side of you and you pick away at your muffin. You feel tired but it's that good kind of weariness when you know you've done a good day's work and you have no regrets about it. An aura of contentment settles about you and you look around you with satisfaction.

A magazine lies in front of you appealingly within reach and you give in and pull it towards you, intent on enjoying your well-deserved rest. The top cover story springs out at you, entitled 'Country Home Decor'. Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had only just seen an article on some stylish country home decor or converting your house into a small country haven in another magazine and it had interested you.

Page upon page of the magazine is filled with what can only be described as the most perfect country home decor you can imagine. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine's pages. A quick look up from your magazine assures you that your own modest abode hasn't changed magically into one of those lovely country homes you were just looking at.

A sad sigh passes your lips at the disappointment and so you go back to reading your magazine article. You had never thought that you were the type of person who could stand the country home decor style but now upon consideration you think you just might be able to.

Now without your even realising it, you find yourself marking the pages that intrigue you the most, making small maths calculations on how best to achieve the same effect but on the smaller budget that you have at your disposal. After all, it just wouldn't do to fork out for that lovely Welsh dresser and have to go without your freshly ground whole bean coffee, would it?

However, you could certainly buy that appealing table runner without a problem. And if you donated all your modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn't really be splurging, would you, since you've done your best for charity and donated all these things so unselfishly?

And what about swapping those jazzy blinds for something that's a bit more in the country home decor style. And while you're going about it, perhaps you could even exchange that awful lampshade you received as a house-warming gift for something more country.

The only thing that is left for you to do now is to lie back and enjoy the results of your labours and gaze with beaming pride upon your newly redecorated home. Furnished, naturally enough, in the best country home decor style that you could cull from every source that you found, like that first magazine article that started it all off way back when. - 16477

What Causes MN Hail Storms, How to Detect Hail Damage, Why to Repair Minnesota Hail Damage

By John Armitege

Minnesota Hail Storms

Throughout the summer months, Minnesota is often times overwhelmed by hail storms. These storms are caused by small water droplets being carried by updrafts in a storm to a height in which they freeze. This process repeats itself and the small water droplet eventually becomes a heavy enough piece of ice to fall to earths surface. Hailstones have been seen in a variety of sizes, from tiny little pebble all the way to the size of baseballs. Larger hailstones are quite capable of reeking havoc on personal property, homes, vehicles, and people.

How Much Damage is Caused by Hail?

Though Minnesota hailstorms are not known to typically cause injury or death to people, they are well known for causing property damage. Golf ball sized hail hit Duluth in 1994 causing a horrific $50 million in damages. In 1998 Minnesota as a whole suffered over $1.5 billion in damages according to the NOAA Economics website. The $1.5 million number came from damage to vehicles, homes, businesses, and crops. Hail is capable of never ending damage such as destroying roofs, ripping off siding, breaking windows, ruining gutters, demolishing landscape, denting vehicles, cracking windshields, and more.

Unseen Damage Caused by Hail

The damage hail causes your roof is often times harder to see and detect then you think. Many times to see the true extent of damage, one must climb up on the roof and look for missing granules on an asphalt roof. With darker roofs the task becomes even harder to spot the granules. A sign of missing granules is a bruise type spot on the roof. Actual penetration or fracture of shingles is severe damage, and wood shingles may split. Depending on your insurance company and the scales they use to measure damage, your warranty may cover a replacement.

Why it is Important to Fix Hail Damage as Soon as Possible

Even if the hail damage is hard to see, it is imperative that it be repaired as soon as possible. Hail can cause small cracks and tears in your roofing material, which will let the water in to your underlayment. While the effects of potential water damage may not show up right away, by the time you notice it the damage could be pretty extensive and expensive. Of course, there is also a time limit to file with your insurance company regarding hail damage, and that date will be long gone by the time the water damage has occurred to your home. After any hailstorm, check for damage, file your claim and get it repaired before it becomes an even more expensive headache.

What You Should Do During a Hail Storm

Finding shelter should be your immediate thoughts if you are caught outside during a hailstorm. Avoid remote trees, any form of water, high ground, open spaces, and picnic shelters. Hailstorms come banging with high winds and lightening, both of which make trees vulnerable areas to hide under. If you are unable to find any shelter, cover your head with your hands and tuck yourself towards your knees. Being indoors can also be dangerous if people are not cautious. Avoid windows, skylights, or glass doors which may break. Also do not use any electrical appliances during the storm, especially telephones. They are capable of conducting electricity. - 16477

How to Build a Garden

By Peter Jackwright

Basically a garden consists of plants, flowers, fountains, long winding pathways, ponds and, let's not forget, green grass. Everyone knows how pleasant it is to see and walk on a neatly trimmed lawn. It's often recommended that kids walk barefoot on the grass, as this promotes good blood circulation in their bodies. The effect is similar to that of foot acupressure.

A lawn needs to be tended to regularly. Weeding, mowing, trimming, clearing fallen leaves, and regular watering is an ongoing process . Healthy lawns have always been in style. Similar to caring for a baby, you also need to give regular maintenance and attention to your lawn. Only then will it stay greenand fresh. Pesticides and fertilizers are used from time to time to to avoid pests and insects from destroying your lawn. Lawns are a good way to combat pollution, since they keep the surrounding air both fresh and cool. If the soil is good then you can have a healthy luscious lawn in your home. Soil, water, and some attention can keep a healthy lawn.

It's also important to water your garden properly. How much water you'll use is dependent on the weather, soil conditions, and the type of grass used. For example, the Kentucky blue grass requires less amount of water. Other types of grass, however require a lot more water. If you use organic manure to feed your grass you will not need pesticides and fertilizers. Choose a type of grass which is popular in your area. Some types of soil will benefit some variety of grass. The ideal type of grass to pick is the one that is known for growing well in your area. Choosing the right type of grass to grow will save you time, money, and effort.

Choose a space for a pond where you may keep colorful fish and water lilies. Remember to have a professional plumber set this up for you. Building a garden requires as much time and energy as building a house. Flowering plants and trees are a pleasure to the sight. Your neighborhood nursery can prove to be a useful resource when it comes to picking out the right plants. The gardener there will be able to guide you what grows well in the area.

Potted herbs and a small vegetable patch are other options you can use in your garden. Having a patio with a deck can be refreshing when you feel like relaxing outdoors.

Gardens are an excellent way to fill your home with beautiful smelling and colorful flowers. It's an excellent way to pass the time and a skill that people take great pride in. Moreover, you can learn how to grow vegetables for your kitchen. There is nothing more juicy and healthy than home grown fruits an vegetables. This summer, consider creating a garden. - 16477

Walk In Closets Are Common In Expensive Homes

By Sarah Poyert

Women like closets more than men do. Many women love the idea of having a big closet where they can spread out all their things and organize them just how they want to. Most men, on the other hand, just want a place to hang some of their stuff and probably throw the rest in. This means that when you have a big closet in the master bedroom meant for both the man and woman, you need some good his and her closet ideas to keep the peace.

Newer homes that are being built are more likely to have big walk in closets than older houses. Especially in master bedrooms, big walk in closets are becoming more and more common because of their popularity. This has even created a small industry of companies that will transform your closet into something special.

Women, it seems, love to figure out how to arrange closets and get the most space out of them. Men, on the other hand, dont usually care half as much and would just as soon throw their stuff in them and be done. This means that the women are usually in charge of planning how to use a closet and this is just fine with the men. Walk in closets are great because it lets the woman be creative and gives them a place to call their own.

Some closets now are so big that they need light in them. Many walk in closets in expensive modern homes are almost the size of a small room and you need to figure out the best lighting solution. They may come with one light on the ceiling but that light may not be sufficient to properly light the area. You will then have to install more lights or bring in a lamp or two to do the job. A favorite lighting solution is track lighting that will look great and highlight the different areas of the closet that you want.

Any big closet needs to be partitioned and it needs to be decided on who gets what. Usually, the woman will get 75% of the closet with the remaining 25% going to the man. Ultimately though, the closet is usually more important to the woman and she should have the say of how it is organized and decorated. - 16477

Indoor And Outdoor Plants Suitable In Greenhouse

By Keith Markensen

This month - June - the indoor and the outdoor garden blend into one. The difference between the garden and greenhouse is merely that which shading and enclosure can produce. This is of great importance to some plants as our summer weather is subject to hot drying winds that are poorly tolerated by many foliage plants. Banana foliage in the tropics is generally seen blown to ribbons, but the humidity and abundant rain seem to reduce the net damage.

However, dracaenas, begonias, the large leaf philodendrons and other delicate plants are certainly happier in the shelter of the glasshouse during the summer, and a sun porch serves almost as well. The glasshouse will, of course, be heavily shaded. For the next few months house plants really come into their own. Many plants which just survive the winter indoors, now make real progress. This is largely due to the increased light intensity and the sharply raised indoor humidity which is carried in by warm air and not dried out by artificial heat.

So this month the indoor gardener with a botanical-garden taste and a pint sized greenhouse can exercise his ingenuity in stretching his home greenhouse.

First, will move out to garden, coldframe, sunroom and living room, everything that will do well in these locations. Then, in the greenhouse create zones of light and shade, dryness and moisture, to please the various collections which may range from desert plants to rex begonias and ferns. Many tender plants enjoy the stay outdoors in summer, and we are glad to unload the greenhouse.

The outdoor plant refuge now becomes an important part of the gardeners world, and some very attractive designs have appeared. Generally in our climate we need wind protection, some shade and moisture conservation for the plants in pots.

Shade may range from the use of a northern exposure to a complete structure which may be open to the elements in the front and sides but is usually roofed over (higher in the front than the back to admit good light). The roof may be solid or trellised, and vines or Spanish moss (down South) may provide additional light shade. For wind protection, louvered fences or trellises dependent, of course, upon the nature of the summer winds.

Plants which enjoy full sun in pots outdoors are not as numerous and common as one might guess, probably due to the limited moisture supply in any pot; most do better in part sun or a northerly exposure. The real sun lovers are aloes, agaves, euphorbias (thorny species), poinsettias (also a euphorbia but without thorns) and some large cacti and succulents. The smaller choice specimens of plants are cared and kept on sunny shelves in the greenhouse. Slightly tempered sun suits some bulbs such as crinum, urginea (sea onion), tulbaghia, crassula, echeveria and some of the more vigorous pelargoniums.

Amaryllis are often put outdoors during the summer. They can stand a great deal of sun provided they do not dry out. When cool weather approaches, pots are lifted and set on their sides under the benches where they receive only occasional moisture during the resting period.

The remaining exotics, now that the greenhouse is cleared, expand rapidly to fill the space. Compression is much more difficult!

Caladiums, tuberous begonias and tritonia, started in the greenhouse, have now been moved out. Tropical annuals that were sown indoors to utilize the full summer season outdoors have been set in the garden. These include the vines moonflower (calonyction) and Cobaea scanderm tithonia, petunias from seed and from cuttings of select doubles;, dahlias, Datura from cuttings and D. metel, D. meteloiales, and D. fastuosa from seed; sanvitalia (the creeping golden"zinnia) and some Amaranthus tricolor or Josephs coat.

Greenhouse repairs are made more easily now that the benches have been emptied of plants. Check and replace cracked glass and rotten bench boards. Sterilize any benches containing soil. - 16477

The Improtance Of Greenhouse

By Kent Higgins

If you love plants, consider greenhouse gardening. By using a greenhouse, you can choose some of the most beautiful plants available to home gardeners. You may think that you do not have enough space for a greenhouse, but actually, you only need a small space that you can adapt for greenhouse gardening. If you are a successful backyard gardener, you can use these skills to successfully grow plants in a greenhouse. By using a greenhouse, you can control the temperature for special plants and projects. A greenhouse can be used to grow many different types of plants depending on your desires.

Greenhouses are used for many projects, including growing plants and flowers during the wintertime, when they would die or stop blooming outdoors. The winter season is typically rather dreary and colorless, so use your greenhouse flowers to brighten up everyone's mood. Grow pink roses or beautiful purple orchids during the winter months. You can also set your plants in a greenhouse to protect them from the weather, so that you can use them in your garden again the next year. That way, you'll have a great start for a beautiful garden in the spring.

You can also use a greenhouse to grow wonderful plants like korean lilac straight from seeds. Buying full-grown plants can be very expensive, especially if you have a large garden. With a greenhouse, you can grow an abundance of plants from just a packet of seed and some good soil. If you want to grow exotic new plants like dwarf korean lilac every season, a greenhouse is the perfect way to do this without spending a lot. You can grow plants from seeds at any time of the year if you have a greenhouse to protect them from the weather and elements.

If you love fresh vegetables, consider growing them in a greenhouse. Even during the winter months in cold climates, you can grow fresh vegetables in a greenhouse. A greenhouse will carefully control the climate so that you get beautiful vegetables every time. You can grow all of the ingredients for a salad right outside your back door in the middle of winter. Involve your children in growing plants in your greenhouse, and experiment with different types of plants that you would never grow in your garden. You can even let your children have space in the greenhouse for a science experiment. If you are serious gardener, definitely consider building a greenhouse on your property, especially if you live in an area where the climate does not permit year-round gardening. - 16477

Battling Grubs in Southern Turf

By Kent Higgins

June may be bride's month to many people, but to the busy southern gardener, it is "groom" month. Lawns - Watering, fertilizing and mowing make up the grooming operations for the lawn this month. The effect of nitrogen fertilizer applied in April will have about worn off by now and a light feeding is necessary.

Few gardeners realize that an average grass plant in one season may make as much as two or three feet of vegetative growth. This plus the fact that over 300 grass plants are on each square foot of lawn area make it easy to realize why regular feedings are necessary to maintain beautiful lawns. Regular applications to the lawn area will maintain good color. Irrigate your lawn, do not sprinkle. Thorough soaking once per week should be sufficient. Mow frequently and to the proper height. The average height of cut for Bermuda grass lawns should be 1 1/2 to two inches. Most people mow much lower and are not aware of it.

Put the mower on a flat surface and measure the distance to the cutting edge of the bed knife (stationary horizontal blade) to determine the height of cut. By doublecutting it is easy to prevent swath patterns in the lawn. If rotary mowers are used make sure the blades are sharp. Dull blades will rip off the tips of the grass, leaving them void of chlorophyll (green coloring matter) and in a few hours white streaks appear on the lawn.

Lawn Pests

One of the worst insect pests in lawns is the beetle grub. This pest is active during early June. It is the larvae stage of several beetles and the most injurious ones come from the beetles whose life cycle is one year (the Asiatic beetle group). The larvae of the so called June mealy bug also causes damage, although not so extensive. The larvae are commonly called "grubs." The grubs feed on the tender roots of grass just below the surface of the soil.

The first indication is wilting of the grass due to the water supply being cut off, then yellowing and in some cases death of the grass. Many times the grass actually can be lifted or kicked free of the location. By digging into the soil a large number of white grubs can be found. Luckily these pests can be controlled rather easily, check with your local county agent for the best control chemicals for your area. Killing the grubs does not repair any damage already done, so careful feeding and watering is necessary to re-establish the lawn.

The only other insect problem on the lawn this month is the army worm. These hairy caterpillars attack in spotty locations and strip off all the foliage. Control is the same as for grubs. - 16477

By Ayeth Boots

The art of quilting had been existent to almost every part of the universe. And in fact, its advancement also coincides with today's modern world. If the yesterday's quilting styles are the Amish bars or the classic kaleidoscope quilts, nowadays, newer designs had been also incorporated into the quilt world, such as the Disney characters, Garfield, and other designs to run in your mind, it may definitely be quilted.

But talking aside of the gender, we all have are free will to decide what to do, and even what hobby to pursue. This questions needs to be thought about and answered by you before deciding to do your quilts.

Know your quilting expertise. There's nothing wrong with accepting the truth, anyway, no one will know unless you broadcast it. If you are a novice quilter, the best option is to start with simpler quilts. It really doesn't matter at all, as long as you do it with passion, it will surely be an adorable quilt.

Be sure to finish what you have started. Many starters enjoyed quilting for the first days, and then it just gets out of their interests a couple of days later. If you have started it, then try to finish it as much as possible, although it is also necessary that you have to love what you are doing as well. Just think about the money and the effort you are going to waste. Anyway, you'll be surely proud after you have finished your quilting job.

Certainly, there are many other ways to do and to keep in mind so that quilting will be a lot more enjoyable and interesting activity. Just think twice or trice before deciding for your first or next quilting project, so you wouldn't regret it later on. - 16477

Vacuum Bags Still Rank Well

By Mathew Kingston

Vacuum cleaners were invented in the early 19nth century. The credit for this fantastic invention goes to Ives Mac Gaffney who was contacted by the Chicago cleaning company to devise such a cleaner that would easily wipe out the dirt from any surface. Later a man named Melville from the Grand Rapids Michigan decided to perfect this invention. His wife patented this technology after his death and earned a fortune for herself. This made way for the modern vacuum cleaners that we know today. Vacuum cleaners have become an inevitable part of the life of every modern household today. Commercial spaces which have carpets cannot even imagine life without a vacuum cleaner.

One cannot imagine a home without a vacuum cleaner. This is considering the fact that carpets have a tendency to gather dust and dirt from shoes and the surroundings, it becomes inevitable then to clean them, to save ourselves from the wrath of respiratory problems, since dust and dirt are well known allergens causing various breathing problems like asthma, sinus etc. The dust can easily rise in the room with people stepping on the carpet constantly. Moreover air conditioning can cause the dust to circulate all over the room. Hence it would be far better to keep away the dust in the first place rather than investing in expensive air purifiers and dehumidifiers after the advent of such kind of respiratory problems, as discussed earlier.

One great advantage of a vacuum bag is that you can easily retrieve any minute object that is untraceable under the carpet or the furniture. People often tend to loose minute objects like wedding rings, contact lenses or coins which are quite burdensome to trace. So all you need to do is vacuum the suspected area and look into the vacuum bag. You can easily get hold of your lost objects. But bag less cleaners are useless since in them, bags are firmly attached to the machine.

Another advantage of vacuum bags is that they can easily be replaced. Just in case your vacuum bag is damaged or stained you can easily get hold of a new one at stores that sell vacuum bags at affordable prices. On the contrary, bag less cleaners do not provide the facility of changing or replacing vacuum bags because in their case the bag is firmly and securely attached to the machine. Hence you need to replace the whole cleaner and not just the bag itself. This can be irksome especially for those people who are not technically knowledgeable and can cause unnecessary damage to the existing cleaner.

Vacuum bag cleaners are comparatively cheaper. Moreover they are excellent cleaners and do their job of making your home dust-free, efficiently. This can be considered an ideal option for middle-class homes who cannot afford to spend more. Bag less cleaners, although, they have their own advantages are expensive than regular vacuum bag cleaners. Hence vacuum bag cleaners can be considered a cheap and an efficient way to keep your home clean and hygienic. - 16477

Are Electric Cookers Safer Than Gas Cookers?

By Rick Jarman

There has been a raging debate on whether electric cookers are actually safer than gas cookers. Both are now an integral part of many kitchens in most continents although coal is also used in remote places and in some countries which are considered Third World. Both gas and electric cookers have revolutionized the way we cook and bake and this has contributed to the great variety of modern foods that we enjoy and which could never have been possible if these two were not around. Both gas and electric cookers constitute of freestanding stoves and ovens which usually have three, four or six heating surfaces. These surfaces are where the cooking pots or utensils are placed and heated. When it comes to appearance, electric cookers and gas cookers share a lot. They both have surfaces on top and they also have control knobs or buttons which are used to regulate the heat. They also both come with in-built ovens which can also be easily regulated to bake.

Gas cookers are actually preferred to electric cookers by culinary professionals who site the flame produced as being more conducive to precision cooking than the electric surfaces. Gas cookers come in many sizes. They even come in small flat portable units which can be easily transported from place to place. In the Third World countries, these portable gas cookers are widely used. The gas comes in the form of a gas cylinder which can be sold separately. There is then a place to attach the gas cylinder to the actual cooker and the burner can be lit with a match or a lighter. This has been the predominant way of cooking for decades.

In the West, gas cookers are larger and more innovative, spotting precision temperature controls and safety valves. The gas is pumped through a network of underground pipes which are maintained by a gas utility company in much the same way as water or electricity is done. The gas utility company can disconnect the gas the same way as the power company can in the event that the customer falls behind on their bill.

Electric cookers on the other hand use primarily electricity. They also contain surfaces where the electricity transmits the heat and the surface increased in heat gradually until it is hot enough to cook or warm something. Electric cookers have been deemed safer than gas cookers. This is because gas is highly flammable and if someone was to accidentally turn on the gas and leave it on it can leak into the atmosphere where it can explode if someone does as little as light a cigarette. This has been the cause of many deaths and property damage in many places.

Electric cookers on the other hand does not pose this threat. If someone was to leave the electric cooker on accidentally, the only thing that would happen would be a waste of power and the fact that the surface would remain hot to the extent that it would warm the immediate area. But the threat of fire is minimal. - 16477

How To Take The Constant Worry Out Of Finding A Flat To Rent?

By James L Harrison

Finding a new land for living can be a irritating and time consuming practice. Initially, seek out process begins and later on, the process of selecting among quite a lot of properties begins. There are a number of ways that can assist you in finding flats or houses for rent, and by utilising them you can reduce your pressure to a larger extent for the moment.

There are actually a lot of ways in which you can start your search which are quite practical and easy. If you want to have a good and successful finding process for a flat for rent, message boards and the Internet are great places to start with the whole thing. However, the first step must be to assess your requirement, jot down them on a paper, and then begin the search. It will help you to be specific in your search.

Doing this and starting with these sources helps you in attaining a reasonably good idea about the cost trends existing in the market. It also helps to have an insight in to the market development.

Another alternative is to consult an estate agent. Again, you have many choices in the matter as each estate agent has something unique on his list. Hence, you can save yourself from the hectic job of looking for a property that fulfils your requirement. Your requirements regarding the property are obtained mostly through a form, online or otherwise, so that you can specify the kind of property you're looking for.

This sort of scheme not only reduces the pressure levels for you, but also lets you have the accurate class of flat for yourself, or the closest possible offered option meeting your requirements. You also don't have to worry about the resources, as you are inquired about your budget limit. Then the property is selected keeping your budget limit in view.

Examining the housing sector in the newspapers can also be very helpful, as it will let you know about the available accommodation facilities. Whenever you are planning to find a flat for rent, you should come up with a considerately worked out financial plan so that you are able to narrow down your options based on the budget.

When deciding the amount for the budget, it is essential that you take into account not only the rent of the flat but also other factors and costs such as utility payments that you will have to make. If these costs are not taken into account initially, they are likely to stretch your budget.

It is good to get all details about the property you are going to take on rent. This will save you from inconvenience in future. Asking about how long you can stay in the flat and whether or not you can re-rent is also vital. You should also make inquiries regarding the furniture, if any in the flat and how to operate other appliances and equipment. - 16477

Why We Should Be Using Hydroelectric Energy

By Tyler Hodger

One of the best sources of renewable, green, energy is hydroelectric energy. In fact, about 7% of the power consumption in the US is generated using hydroelectric energy. This type of energy is generated by harnessing the gravitational force of falling water. In many ways, this is not unlike the process that is used in wind turbines (using wind energy).

The primary way of achieving this is by utilizing dams. By creating a dam, and preventing water from flowing in a river behind it, it is possible to create an enormous amount of potential energy. Once released from the dam, the water flows through a turbine and an electric current is created which can then be utilized. This energy can be used to power homes and businesses.

This form of energy creation holds numerous advantages. The primary advantage is that it is environmentally friendly: it does not pollute the earth, it reduces green house gasses and global warming. Furthermore, it is potentially limitless: since water sources are constantly being replenished through rainfall, this is very efficient - unlike utilizing fossil fuels which exist in finite amounts (and will eventually run out).

Additionally, wherever it can be used - which is quite a lot of places, since many countries have rivers - this is relatively a cheap source of energy. Once hydroelectric power plants are built their maintenance is not expensive nor are they hard to operate. Furthermore, this is just the beginning: it is estimated this technology will continue to mature, thus, the costs and benefits would just increase.

Regardless of the source of electricity, whether it is created using wind, water, oil or coal, the benefits we gain are endless. Currently, water provides the electricity needed for homes and businesses around the world. This electricity operates everything from house hold appliances to wireless devices and large production equipment. Hydroelectric energy can also be stored to be later used in a motor vehicle to reduce our dependence on fuel. - 16477

Shower tips for Walk-in tubs

By Bob Ranold

One of the most basic and most repeated acts in one's life is getting clean. That means once the alarm goes off for most us we know it is time to jump into the shower. This is the routine for millions of people the world over.

Then you quickly finish your breakfast waiting for it to be finished and rush off to your respective work-place or school or college. But then, in your rush, you forget how much energy, each small act, requires, including, a bath.

This is because thousands of people live with ailments such arthritis, back injury, old age, sports injuries and so forth. For these, especially older senior citizens they cannot get into the shower without help and this help can be in the form of a wheel chair or another person who is attending to them. Then there are those who do not necessarily have any illness but they were born with a crippling birth defect. These too need constant assistance when getting into the shower or bath tub. The answer is walk-in tubs.

But there is an answer to their unsaid question - Walk-in bath tubs that have modifications to provide them the ease of use.

A walk-in tub has modifications that render it very helpful, that are, in fact, very finely related to a car wherein a door is cut out to be opened and closed for refined mobility in and out of the tub. Just like in a car, you can walk into the tub without any unease. Now, you won't have to endure the troubles of lifting your legs and entering the tub. You can walk into it and even sit down if you ask for the extra modification of a seat. Once inside, you can use the usual taps, faucets and shower.

It is easy to transition from a regular tub to a walk-in tub. Some homes which are certified assisted living facilities. These are mandated by Federal law to be equipped with walk in showers and tubs.

The Federal law makes it mandatory for these homes to have walk-in bath tubs. These homes need to take care of people who are either crippled, elderly or with some illness or injury. Hence, they require such tubs to make bathing convenient for them. You can very easily ask your local store that deals with home improvement objects to make the switch to a Walk-in tub. While doing so, you will come across different types of walk-in tubs. Among these varieties are the Safety Tubs that are quite popular among the masses as they do not require re-doing your bathroom to make it fit.

You can either opt for deals that these stores offer to ask someone to install it for you, with just a little bit extra fees; if not then you can very well install it yourself, with the help of the manual that comes along. So, go ahead, enjoy a heavenly bath with full ease, comfort and luxury. - 16477

Why Use Vacuum Bag Cleaners?

By Mathew Kingston

The current vacuum cleaners were developed by a Chicago native by the name of Ives McGaffney whom the Chicago Cleaning Company contacted to produce a machine that can speed up commercial and domestic cleaning. The technology was later modified to create a successful model of the vacuum cleaner that we know today. This then paved the way for mass production of the cleaners as different companies joined in their production. Most offices in the West and other parts of the world use these cleaners as a regular part of their cleaning routine and it is hard to imagine offices and homes without cleaners.

Vacuum cleaners are very popular and also essential. The dust particles that are trapped in the carpet accumulate and then begins to rise into the immediate above the carpet. This is then blown by the air conditioning that is in the house. This can then cause dust to be dispersed into every room. It then becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that causes flu-like symptoms and also other viruses and fungi not to mention the ever-present pollen. These viruses, fungi and pollen cause flu-like symptoms, respiratory issues especially with children and senior citizens, nasal congestion, sinus pressures and more. Asthma attacks can also be more intensified and more frequent because of a hig concentration of dust. Vacuum cleaners are a first line of defense because after "prevention is better than cure".

People have come to love cleaners that utilize vacuum bags because in the event that you loose a valuable items such as a ring, or a precious stone you can retrieve it from the vacuum bag. Bagless cleaners while being more modern may not afford this luxury.

Cleaner bags can also be easily replaced if they become damaged or stained. One can find these bags in many stores that sell also vacuum cleaners. One advantage of vacuum bags is that they can easily be replaced without the necessity of replaced without having to replacing the entire cleaner. While the bagless cleaners are more "in" as far as being modern, they come with certain disadvantages especially for those who are not technically savvy incase there was a malfunction.

Regular cleaners with bags are also cheaper. They also do an excellent job when it comes to cleaning and removing dust and dirt in general. For those who want to maintain a clean environment. This can also be easily done with bag cleaners without necessarily spending a small fortune. While bagless cleaners are definitely wonderful as well, we must admit that cleaners that come with bags are a convenient and cheap way to keep dust and dirt away. - 16477

Benefits Of An Electric Fireplace

By Cameron Mitchell

It?s little surprise that a growing number of homeowners have chosen an electric fireplace for their residences. The appliances add the warmth and charm of gas or wood-burning fireplace but at a fraction of the cost.

According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, manufacturers shipped 445,000 electric fireplaces, freestanding stoves and inserts in 2007. That?s a significant increase from the 300,000 of these electric hearth appliances shipped just three years earlier.

It?s no surprise that the electric fireplace is gaining in popularity; The appliance has several benefits that its gas and wood-burning counterparts can?t duplicate. An electric fireplace, for instance, can be located anywhere in a home, does not need to be vented and is easy to maintain. An electric fireplace is also simple to operate, and the appliance, because it costs less than either wood-burning or gas fireplaces, can leave more dollars in the pockets of homeowners.

Apartment dwellers often feel that they can?t enjoy the benefits of a fireplace. But with an electric fireplace, this isn?t true. The reason is simple: An electric fireplace can be installed and operate in any location that has electricity. Apartment residents merely have to take their electric fireplace out of its box, plug it into the nearest electrical outlet and turn them on.

Electric fireplaces are easy to operate, too. Owners simply turn them on as if they were turning on their bedroom lights.

Versatility is another positive of an electric fireplace. Owners can choose a fire with no heat or one that?s hot enough to toast an entire room.

Maintaining an electric fireplace poses little challenge, either. Homeowners simply have to change their electric fireplace?s light bulbs when they burn out. This shouldn?t cause even the most repair-phobic homeowner any concern.

Lastly, and in today?s tough economic times perhaps most importantly, there?s price. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, gas and wood-burning fireplaces can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 to install once a home has already been built. An electric fireplace, though, may only cost homeowners $500 total, though there are more expensive models available.

If you don't have a built in fireplace an electric fireplace is a viable option for adding the warmth and ambiance of a fireplace to your home. With the many styles, sizes, and prices available there is an electric firplace to fit everyone. Don't hesitate to spice up your life with this amazing fireplace accessory. - 16477

Solar Christmas Lights for Bright and Low-Cost Christmas Holidays

By John Monsholi

Solar Christmas lights are one of the most popular Christmas decorations nowadays, due to their cost efficiency and attractiveness. These types of lights will allow the homeowner to save up to 100 W per each string of Christmas lights. Solar Christmas lights add magic to any Christmas, since they do not have to be turned on or off. The lights will automatically turn on with the onset of the evening.

One of the advantages of solar Christmas lights is that they eliminate the need of a power outlet. You can decorate any tree in your garden, no matter how far away it is from the house. Decorating your Christmas trees this way is much safer, easier and more cost-effective.

Solar Christmas lights come with little solar panels, which easily stick into the ground, as well as, they can be placed on a branch. Solar panels include solar cells (usually 4 cells), a rechargeable battery and a light sensor. Solar cells convert the sunlight into electricity, and on a sunny day the sun will give enough energy to completely recharge the battery.

When looking for solar Christmas lights, it is better to opt for the lights equipped with special polycrystalline solar cells, which allow the lights to emit bright light for hours even after being charged for merely a few hours on a rainy, snowy or an overcast day.

How to calculate how long the lights will shine after the sun goes down? It is actually quite easy. Solar Christmas lights will usually stay on for about one hour at night, after being charged for about one hour in the daytime. Therefore, if the area where you live gets about eight hours of sun per day, you will also get about eight hours of shining lights in the evening.

Solar Christmas lights come in different shapes, such as round, teardrop and oval shapes. The lights also come in different colors, such as the yellow, red, green and blue. You can also find a specific type of light, which you would prefer to see on Christmas, starting with a soft light and up to a very bright light.

Once Christmas is over, it doesn't mean that you have to take your solar Christmas lights down. You can keep them in your garden, in order to; for example, decorate arches in your garden with this pleasant type of light. The lights can also be used for various other holidays, such as anniversaries and birthdays, as well as for lighting of pathways, porches, etc.

When choosing your solar Christmas lights, it is better to look for the lights with a rechargeable and replaceable AA battery. This type of a battery will allow you to enjoy your Christmas lights, even if they did not recharge on rainy or snowy days. All you would need to do is to charge batteries with a regular charger. Lithium batteries are not a good choice, since most likely you won't be able to replace them, yourself.

Main advantages of solar Christmas lights are that they will allow homeowners to save hundreds of dollars on their electric bills. Other advantages include eliminating the need in electrical outlets, not having to turn the lights on and off, and not having to worry about the wires running across your yard.

It might be a good idea to watch your yard for at least two or three days before placing your solar lights. The most important thing to note is that the area, where you want to place your solar Christmas lights, does not get a shadow cast. Another important thing to remember is that solar Christmas lights operate best when their solar panel is in direct sun throughout the day. - 16477

Can't Get A House Improvement Loan? Consider A Hardware Store Credit Cards

By T Miller

It's not cheap to work on your home. The costs for purchasing construction supplies, hiring a qualified contractor and paying the various fees for permits can quickly add up.

You could borrow cash from a bank to help pay for all the work, but banks always expect you to pay back not only the loan, but also the interest. A $8,000 bathroom remodel may actually end up costing you $15,000 by the time you've paid back all the interest. Instead of going for a bank loan, why not look into some of those credit cards offered by the larger hardware store chains? As long as you have decent credit and a plan to pay them back, it's usually an option worth considering. Those credit cards have several unique advantages:

Zero Percent for a Limited Time: Many of those hardware store credit cards give you a period of 6 to 12 months with no interest charges as long as you use the credit card in their store. Some Home Depot credit cards offer no interest as soon as you open them. A year without interest accruing could save you thousands of dollars in payments depending on the size of your project!

In-Store Discounts: When you initially use hardware store credit cards you will often get a small discount as well. You might save 5% - 10% on the total cost of the project, which could be a pretty good chunk of change at the end of the day.

All-In-One-Solution: There is something to be said for buying all your home improvement materials for a specific project from one store. Instead of visiting a dozen stores to find a kitchen sink you can go to one store and buy a faucet, a sink, a refrigerator, all the other appliances and even hire and schedule the installers all at one time. You don't need a big home improvement store credit card to necessarily do this, but things do seem to go much smoother this way.

These home improvement credit cards can end up being a win-win for both the customer and the store. The store sells more inventory and makes more profit while the customer is able to "borrow" more money to make home improvements without having to pay any interest for a limited time! A limited time of no interest payments, possible discounts and the ease of ordering everything in one store makes those large hardware store credit cards a pretty good idea in many cases! - 16477

Would You Like To Use Wind To Power Your House?

By Bart Forcey

World leaders and environmentalists are singing the praises of the future of wind generated power. Countries around the globe are investing in new technologies and considering wind farms both on and off shore. The United States, Great Britain, and Australia are just three such countries committed to realizing the benefits of wind generated power.

Wind farms are housed both onshore and offshore. Off shore wind farms are a relatively new occurrence with the largest being off the coast of Scotland. The turbines are placed in rows along the ocean floor in shallow waters close to shore. California's central valley has been home to wind farms for almost 30 years. The wind generated in the central valley is fed into the public energy grid. Because wind is an intermittent energy source it is often used as an energy supplement.

The United Kingdom has taken steps to map a future powered by off shore wind farms. The shelved sea floor off the coast of Great Britain is ideal for the placement of turbines. Massive off shore wind farms have not been built in the U.S. yet. However, the topography of the ocean floor surrounding the United States might be a limiting factor. Gigantic underwater canyons and steep drops will be keeping wind farms off of the U.S. pacific coast.

Off shore wind power generation is more consistent than onshore wind turbines because winds at sea are more consistent, stronger, and the turbines can be much larger. However, offshore wind generated power is only one piece of the wind power puzzle. Benefits of onshore power farms are sources of income for landowners, tax benefits, and job creation.

The cost of turbines seems to be a sticking point for those selling the technology. Although the turbines pay themselves off faster than any other source of energy infrastructure, there is still apprehension at investing such a large sum in a still developing technology. Even without complete support, wind power has a yearly production of more than 100 billion kilowatt hours worldwide.

Interest in wind power is global. Denmark, Australia, India and even Morocco already have wind farms generating portions of their countries power. Many experts in alternative fuels believe that wind power will be an excellent option for fostering independence in developing nations.

Wind generated power projects are generally funded by governments and non governmental organizations world wide. Employment outlooks for this sector are increasing especially with the U.S. President Obama committing more funding to the industries of alternative energy production. The American Wind Energy Associate estimates that 4.8 jobs will be created for every 1 mega watt of wind power installed. - 16477

All about Aroma Rice Cookers

I am a rice fan, which tastes really good when I put some raisins and cream on it. Steamed snowpeas and carrots is also mouth watering. But a rice that is too sticky really puts me off and I also don't like it if it is too dry (I am in no mood to chew brittle bits).

Praise the Lord for giving us Aroma rice cookers. These cookers allow you to cook yummy rice. Why do many consumers love these rice cookers by Aroma?

They make your life easier

I just love the fact that these rice cookers make cooking so easy. They are so simple you can cook your favorite rice in no time. Using the measuring cup and the rice paddle narrows your job to perfecting the rice-to-water ratio.

And then leave your rice cooker to the job. They also have parts that are easy to clean.

They come in different sizes

The Aroma line also offers rice cookers of various sizes. Aroma's Pot-Style Rice Cooker has a traditional Japanese design. It comes in different cup sizes: 3, 7, 9, 10, and 15. Aroma's Cool-Touch model can be as small as a 4 cupper and as big as a 15 cupper.

The commercial models have 24- and 30-cup versions. The smaller Aroma rice cookers are great for singles and couples. The larger ones are perfect for any occasion.

They go well with your counter

Getting a bulky rice cooker is probably not a good idea, especially if you have small kitchen space. Thanks God for my Aroma rice cooker. Every Aroma rice cooker is designed to save space.

They are all-around rice cookers

The flexibility of Aroma rice cookers makes them a hit with many consumers. Not only do they cook great rice, they can also steam veggies, seafood, and poultry. They can also cook soups and stews. The rice cookers also have spacious bowl and come with steaming baskets, saving you significant amount of time and energy.

They have lower price tags

They are surprisingly very affordable relative to other popular brands like the Zojirushi rice cooker. And the Aroma rice cookers do well in the competitive market. Three-cup version costs around $14 and the 30-cup version costs $129.

These rice cookers are perfect gifts for your loved ones. - 16477

Property Taxes: Special Assessments and Direct Assessments

By Valerie Faltas

In addition to your basic property taxes, if your property tax bill seems unusually high especially during this housing crisis you may have a Special and/or Direct Assessment on your house. This will vary based on the area your residence is located, there may be charges necessary to pay off any voter-approved general obligation bonds or other indebtedness, special assessments, or direct levies. Such as, a Direct Assessment may be applied to your residence if voters decide to establish a sewage system in a neighborhood that is older where most of the homes use septic tanks. The direct assessment is used to cover the cost of this improvement to the community.

Most of the time, a direct assessment would be added on to your property tax bill over several years so the taxpayers are not inundated by the special assessment to pay for the improvement. Special and Direct Assessments have a reason they are added on to your basic assessment such as an improvement to a community and when that new improvement has been paid for the special or direct assessment is complete and will no longer be on your property tax bill. Normally, this type of debt is usually fraction of a percent increase in your existing property tax rate.

Direct assessments are placed on your property tax bill by the county tax collector for the local levying agency or district, not on behalf of the assessor, auditor-controller, and/or the county tax collector departments. Keep in mind, that Special and Direct Assessments are voter approved taxes so if there is any issue with it, it did not come from the Office of the Assessor. To find out more or to dispute a special assessment on your property, contact the levying district. Usually this information is on your property tax bill.

However, you cannot refuse to pay the property tax bill that contains the direct levy amount, even if the direct levy amount is under review. Always keep in mind that no matter how much you disagree with what is on your property tax bill it is always better to pay the bill and get refunded later than to have a lien against on your house. The processes to delete a delinquent property tax bill and all of the fines associated with that need several signatures and explanations within the Assessor's Office and Tax Collector's Office and can be complicated. So keep it simple, always pay your bill, any exception to this would be an extreme case.

Real Estate Postcard Marketing Tip: Lead Your Client to Respond

By M. B. Bradley

Money-making real estate direct mails do not stray from the proven direct marketing formula. So although writing real estate postcard marketing content is challenging, investors need not feel lost because there are established marketing guides they can follow and perhaps innovate.

One of the most authoritative marketing formulas is AIDA. I am sure you have heard of it by now, but for the newbie this means to gain your prospects 'attention', then continue to engage his 'interest'; amplify his 'desire' to sell their homes to you; and then to lead him to 'act' on this desire.

Unfortunately, even the best of us who write for a living sometimes neglect to emphasize the last component of a good sales letter, the call to action. Too often, we simply assume that we know what the consumer will do. The truth of the matter is that sometimes (most of the time, actually) we have to lead the reader to the final steps of our sales pitch: the call to action.

And if you're new to the writing of marketing materials, you may even feel a bit shy about actually writing a call to action. It may remind you of those commercials on television. "And if you're the first 200 callers you'll also receive at"

But do you know why just about every commercial on TV is written like that? Because they work. Direct marketers will stick with a style, a wording, an entire ad campaign as long as it's pulling in the sales for them. They take the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" to a whole new level.

So to succeed in your real estate postcard marketing, get over your shyness about asking your clients to e-mail you, call you, or visit your website. Don't waste your magnetic headline and great offer by having a weak call-to-action.

But more than asking them to act, you need to write your call to action so they feel it's absolutely necessary that they act today. In fact, they need to act while they have that postcard in hand. Far too often with direct mailing the old adage of "out of sight, out of mind" applies.

So use your customer knowledge and creativity to come up with a strong reason that will make people do what you want them to do.

Give them a reason - even an obvious reason - to act RIGHT NOW! Remember, there are reasons why the television commercials continue to urge viewers to call within the next 10 minutes. They are reasons why incentives are given to those "first 200 callers."

Create that kind of interest and excitement in your real estate investment service and your postcard mailing will generate you some substantial profits - guaranteed! - 16477

Solar Energy And Going Off The Grid

By Christina Starkits

Everyday people are tossing money in the garbage without even realising it. Nobody really thinks about electricity, we just pay for it and think thats the price of living nowadays. Why not change this mentality? "Going Green", we hear about it all the time but is it easier said than done? Absolutely Not. With a little knowledge and awareness we can save money and preserve our planet. Instead of generating power from outside sources, keep your money in the bank and create your own solar power system within your very own home.

Energy star certified appliances are a great way to start "going green", just by replacing your old appliances with more energy efficient ones you can easily see a drop in your electrical bills. Simple upgrades around your home can amount to great savings in your bank account. Since saving money is such a priority nowadays with the cost of living being so high, there are a great number of kits available on the market to make the load on your wallet a lot lighter.

Becoming more informed on how to save energy is only the beginning. Making your own source of solar power is the next piece of the puzzle. Contrary to popular belief, making your own solar power at home is not as expensive as people think. With more importance being put on being more environmentally conscious there are great methods out there to produce your own solar power from home allowing you to spend a few hundred dollars rather than a few thousand.

The basics of solar energy generation rely on the photo-electric effect, which is (interestingly enough) what Albert Einstein got his Nobel Prize for. This is also called the photo-voltaic process, and your solar panels will be linking up arrays of solar cells to generate current. You'll also want an energy storage system, which is usually going to be a set of marine batteries tied to an inverter.

Solar panels are not only known to use sunlight and convert it into usable energy, but can also store extra energy for use at later time as it is needed. There are plenty of new systems out there that are not only used as a single system to convert energy but also duel systems to serve multiple purposes that can all save a lot of money. A lot of this information is new to the average individual but with a little research people are becoming more open to the ideas and realizing it can be done for a relatively inexpensive price.

This is a fairly substantial investment in time, and often times in money though it can be done piecemeal. The calculation you need to do is how quickly the solar cells will pay for themselves in reduced electrical bills, and surprisingly enough, this is turning into 'pay out' dates of under a year from installation.

Obviously in this article we are just hitting the basic points of solar energy. The benefits are countless and this is just a quick overview of how easily you can be profiting from creating your own resource for energy rather than the electrical companys profits from you! Furthermore, you are getting mental satisfaction of knowing your doing something great for our planet and your children will thank you for it! - 16477
